Upgraded Horn ?
« on: July 15, 2017, 06:57:09 PM »
Like to upgrade my stock horn on my 74' CB 750 K4.  I purchased a Fiamm Freeway Blaster Low Tone #72112 and really can't tell much difference than stock even though this horn is rated at 130 db ?  So with an electrical horn,  what are you guys using with good success ?

You need to run that through a relay fed directly from the battery

My bike has a cheap dual snail horn. It did not work without a relay, just a few clicks. Original wires start the relay, thick wire direct from battery + with a hanging fuse close to the battery.
Compressor horn if you like to be heard, Stebel Nautilus.

Being invisible to the pedal box drivers I see no reason for a good horn, if they can't see my headlight why would a horn blast make any difference. That's just the way it is where I am, totally invisible I am.

Somewhere around 1970 I got tired of being invisible and put an air horn on a CB77. The starter clutch was wrecked so I mounted the compressor in place of the starter motor and used the solenoid for power.
It made a huge difference. People noticed the locomotive-like blast of that horn and stopped from turning into my path or cutting into my lane.
I saw a parked pickup in Myrtle beach with 3 (three!!!) actual locomotive horn sets mounted. I have no idea why. Hopefully he wears hearing protection if he ever blows them. But I bet people get the message when he does.

My louder horns have stopped cars from changing lanes just in front or beside of me, almost pressing me off the road if not stopped. I'm always prepared for those drivers with minimum control and I have less need of sudden hard brake when the horn make a difference.

The Stebel Nautilus is pretty loud, but a heavy sucker.  I wish I could find something that loud that didn't weigh like a ship anchor.

Are you talking about the Compact Nautilus?  Yes, the compressor is heavy but needed to deliver the blast.

I used to have a Stebel (not the Nautilus) decades ago. That compressor was very heavy indeed. What wonders me even today is that it never killed the horn button contacts, in spite of not having a relay. On a camping I used the compressor to inflate my mattress. (You should have seen the faces of neighbouring campers.) Later I got tired of the three (!) trumpets on the right side and I replaced the set by an original Voxbell claxon. It's a classic, known from old Guzzi's and vintage Italian sportcars like Lancia, Alfa Romeo and the like. It has a wonderful sound (115dB). I would describe it as 'class and distinction'. The set draws 10A, so you need a relay and a separate 15A fuse. When I bought it, they were quite cheap and easy to fit. Looks nice too.

Hella has a set designed like that but I do not believe it comes in chrome.  Fiamm also carries that style.
The Stebel Nautilus Compact model does not have separate trumpets, they are built into the body around the compressor to one side with the round diaphragms on each side feeding a square opening to the front for the horn outlet at the bottom of the compressor.
I have a pair of these I am fitting to my bikes, fabbing a heavier mount is one challenge for them, not to hard.  The space to tuck them in and not stand out can be a challenge.

This is a very loud horn compared to stock dosent weigh a ton and does not need a relay (sure it prob helps though)

HELLA 002768082 Horn, Disc Type, 12 V, 116 db

Bought from Amazon

Used on my CB750K4 - I painted the horn black to hide it and it fits in stock location. Very happy with it and does indeed scare sleepy drivers!

David,

Agreed. The Stebel is compact but very heavy.  I have one but haven't mounted it yet because of the extra weight.  I wish there was something as small and loud, but not so darn heavy.

My stock cb750 horn wasn't loud at all, I had a couple spare Volvo 240 horns in a parts box, its loud as hell now and people really notice it lol. Two wire connection and it's the same style of horn as the stock, mounts to the stock horn bracket exactly like the original did. Cost me a couple bucks at the wrecker, was from a mid 80's 240 series Volvo.

I have loud horns on my 78 GL. I recently honked at a big Doe in a field near the edge of the road and she ran right at me. I was too fast for her but very surprised.
