I think its due to the change in the collector design. Welding the 4 long, curved pipes to the collector, versus 4 short straighter pipes is much more cumbersome. And the reality of the weld at the mid-pipe is not effect, other than visual. I could be wrong on why the change though...

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. According to Chris, there is a power advantage to the stepped design. I know nothing about exhaust and header science so Idk if he's right or not. It's his business, so I'll assume he knows what he's doing. It doesn't look as good, but it doesn't really bother me either. Not yet, anyways. So I don't plan on eating $100 worth of shipping costs by sending it back and buying something else. I can always get a different one later if I change my mind. Exhausts are a pretty easy thing to change

He def knows his stuff, just wondering why he changed em all of a sudden.  The CB900 exhaust he currently has on eBay has the weld down low close to the collecter, more pleasing to the eye.  I'm no exhaust guru either but why has no one else ever done it if it is a power advantage?  Just thoughts in my head, glad it doesn't bother you.

I did think it was interesting that I hadn't seen that done on any of his other exhausts. He said he's been doing his 550 exhausts that way for 2 years. Idk. Once I have it on the bike instead of sitting in a box, maybe I'll change my mind

So I'm Chris ,You can send it back for a full refund as i said in the email this morning .
I changed the pipe back about 18mths-2yrs ,The reason is function .Since there is Devillic (china)  or hindle are around  nowadays I changed up the 4-1 to include a stepped header so this is the best performing pipe for a 500-550.The stepped header is flared and then seam welded (most exhaust companys just slide one into the other ) .So I have to bend two sets of headers to make one .
The collector is larger also and this is due to most guys have pod filters or a set of Cr's so its all about getting (o2) Air in ,Air used and exhaust out .
Yoshimura back in the day started stepped headers only on there factory bikes,Its all about having a smaller dia header pipe for torque (slight back pressure , helps  encourage scavenging  )  and the stepped (larger dia) for flow once your on the throttle/gas .The larger collector helps merge those gasses and sends them down the pipe .Thats the basic version .
I still make these maybe 5-10 a year,I still use American stainless and components so the cost to make these now is well over what I sell them for .I really don't have time nowadays as i m building my own production bike for the past 8mths & customer bikes  but I still like building the odd pipe for #$%* and giggles.
I will be making a new cb550/750 pipe in the next 2 mths ,last version ever  and will be a true merge collector
But please if its not your thing just send it back ...

I just mounted the same exhaust on my 550. If you want to hear how it sounds before mounting yours, let me know and I'll get you a video.

Ive decided to part this project out. A buddy of mine has a bike very high on my want list. I want it more than a custom cb550, so ive got to get rid of this.

After doing more research, i decided to pass on the 916. I still want one some day, but i want the sps model and i cant afford that right now. So instead i bought this 2002 998. I have to wait a week for delivery which sucks, but im very excited about it. Its mostly stock, but with some very nice and expensive upgrades.
