I finally got the Roadworthy Certificate for my “new” Ford truck today. I bought it for the “Sofa king low” price of $1600, then $1992 for the electrical issues that forced the 84 year old PO to sell it, then $200 for new headlights and brake pedal rubber, $290 for the inspection and report, $800 for various repairs, $950 for a new LPG converter, and $385 for more repairs and aircon regas. Total price (with government transfer fees) a tad over $6K AUD (around $4K USD) but I’m very happy with it, and the $5K (AUD) that I sold the Mitsubishi for pretty much paid for all the work. Sure, I could buy a new one for $50K or so, but it wouldn’t be as useful to me as this one. ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

electrical issues are expensive!especially if you cant diagnose it yourself?so many decent cars get scrapped because repair is more than the cars worth,in my job i go to scrap metal places and theres always straight looking complete cars 10 years old plus which aint old in my eyes!,i mentioned to a worker about it,he said most of these come from workshops where the repair out weighs the cars value,#$%*ing shame?

Yeah Dave, the original problem was that the ECU wasn’t reading the signal from the “Smart” keys, so they had to send the keys and ECU to a tech here in Melbourne (car was in Bairnsdale) who provided 2 new key transmitters, keyed to my ECU. The gas converter was leaking both LPG and coolant (they run coolant through them to stop the gas from freezing) so a new one was still sitting on the shelf at the garage that do my car roadworthy inspections, retail is $1200 for the unit (you can still buy reconditioned ones for around $750, but I’d prefer new) so he installed it for $950 total, which was good. You can’t buy ball joints for them, Ford changed it so you have to buy new control arms as well with the ball joints built into them, it had a leaking exhaust, needed new rubber hangers for the exhaust, the transmission cooler pipes were leaking, etc etc etc.

He’s not a bad guy, but as you said, last time I was there he had probably a dozen cars that had been left there by their owners because they couldn’t afford the repairs, so as all the land is being sold off, he sent them to the wreckers. It is a shame to see them crushed with only minor repairs required, but parts and labor is so expensive, sometimes you’re better off walking away from them. I wish I could do that with bikes…. ;D

Polished my “amateur” paint job for about an hour and called it done! Alignment and corner weights are done. Race car is ready for the coming weekend and cleaning out the trailer today. Picking up fuel and food later in the week. We’re off to Calabogie for another double header this weekend. Lovely 3 mile road course, in mountainous ski country, north of Perth, Ontario. Only about a three hour tow from home.  Two eight hour races, one each day. Weather looks good, fingers crossed.

+1 ...good luck John.

Years ago, I crewed for my brother in a SCCA endurance race, I was one of the "fuel guys", it was great fun. A lot different than his typical sprint races where there are no pit stops.   I miss those days of touring the country's race tracks...

Thanks Steve! After 55 seasons you would think it would get “old”, but it doesn’t (only I do). Calabogie is a beautiful track and I can’t wait! Car is washed and polished, ready to load.

I changed oil in 2015 Camry.  Seems like a no brainer, but it was quite the pita.  They use a cartridge filter and the housing needs a special wrench to get it off.  Also putting it back together I #$%*ed up the little plug in the middle and had to make a new one.  Luckily it was M20 and - thanks to dealing with Honda motorcycles - I have the M20 die.  Still, twenty minutes job turned into most of the afternoon.

The mini has a cartridge filter and the filter kit has a new center screw/plug for the cartridge drain in each kit along with a couple new orings for the housing.

This one had only o-rings. Still, it was scary like #$%*.  Putting a  car out of commission changing oil is just crazy.

Not surprised. That car has one of the sweetest exhaust notes on the road.

Friday I replaced yet another cracked rim on my Lincoln. This is the 3rd wheel I've replaced. I don't know what it is about the wheels on this car. But I have had cracks welded 3 times, and then finally gave up and just replaced the wheel. The replacements are a different style OEM, so hopefully these are tougher.

Sunday I made some upgrades to my motorcycle trailer. The bike was at our place in Michigan and I needed it back in Chicago so I could take it to the Motoblot show next weekend. I won't be back in Michigan for a couple weeks, so I couldn't leave me car and just ride home.

The trailer spent the winter in a lean to on one of our barns. I installed a new deck last fall. Last night I pulled it out and installed some stainless bolts through the deck as extra security and a motorcycle chock that I picked up last month at a swap meet. Well worth the $40 and the bike didn't move an inch the whole trip from Michigan to my office.

Two year old starter/generator motor in the golf cart developed some “dead spots” on the weekend, at the race track. An ex neighbour (Foxon Starter Motor and Alternator Repair) sold it to me a few years ago and couldn’t believe how worn out it was…… until I reminded him I have lots of space and three grandchildren.
We had a good laugh! Should be ready today.

Installed the completely rebuilt starter/ generator in the golf cart…… NO spark?

See the orange wire that feeds the tiny coil? Half way along the last stretch, it had turned to dust, under the sheathing! Shortened it up for now, but soon to be replaced!

Runs like a champ again.
