Finally...Soon to have a winter workspace
« on: November 18, 2018, 09:43:38 PM »
12 Years with an uninsulated detached garage and it should soon be insulated.

Fell in love with the IR heaters in Ron's (MCRiders) garage I had to get a couple for myself. Got 2 Fostoria 57" 3000Kwh Units..They're great on their own, but just started the insulation today.

Cant wait to be able to work year round in the shop without freezing my bits  ;D  Hopefully be fully done a bit after thanksgiving

These heaters are fantastic....cant wait to work in a heated insulated space during the winter. Rafter vents, bats, and sheathing on order...it'll be sealed up soon.

Congrats and many happy and cozy hours of "work" are just around the corner.👍

Are you putting up a ceiling of some kind ? That would make a huge difference also.

Yep...decided to install rafters vents and insulate the rafters channels so the overhead space stays open.  Had to special order the insulation for that so doing the walls first.

Curious about how much electricity those IR heaters take up, and their cost? It would seem that a mini-split would have been a better value so you would have AC in the summer for basically the same price?

Yes...I considered a mini split, but decided against it as I’m not planning to constantly heat or cool the place at this time.  I have the infrastructure planned out if I change my mind later.

What really sold me was working over in Ron’s shop with these heaters.

I already have a small air conditioner unit I use in the summer.  It’s just that now it will probably perform better in an insulated space :)

Total cost for the heaters was somewhere around 600$ for the heaters and 2 variable controllers.

That's about the same cost as a mini split. Gotta believe a single mini would be more energy efficient than 2 IR heaters? Be curious to see what the electric bill is running those this winter. Insulating definitely helps, a LOT.

That's the plan...I'll see how they do and how much it hurts.  Either way too late to go back now  ;)

Split systems are great.   We have one in the barn, upstairs as a playroom/guestroom.  Takes about half an hour to make it pleasant - either cool down or heat up.

Got 2 Fostoria 57" 3000Kwh Units..
Uh, I think you mean 3KW. ;) 3000 Kw is 3 million watts, not 3000 watts. The kilowatt hour draw is the load times the hours; 3 KW X 1 hour = 3 KWH. The power company charges a per KWH amount, on top of other charges, so it's hard to determine the price per KWH, but an educated guess in my area would be 10-20 cents after the regular monthly charges. In other words, if you ran one of the heaters for 10 hours, it would add $3-$6 to your electric bill. Also, radiant heaters don't heat the air in the room directly; they work by "shining" infrared energy onto objects like your body. It's like the heat radiated from a campfire; when facing it, your front is warm, but your backside is cold. ;)
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

Correct Scottly, mistype on my part..was using kWh calculator at the time and it stuck in my head

Nice thing with having 2 is one shines on my face while the second shines on my other face

We’re about 10cents a kWh here for residential.   These heaters will be turned down very low after initial warm up...I plan to monitor draw out of curiosity for a bit.

Looking good. I'm also insulating the garage a little at a time....Still need to find $ to finish the rafters and buy a real garage door (currently using a tarp, which keeps the rain/snow out anyways).

We never really need to worry much about the cold here (SoCal) but it gets hot to where AC would be a definite plus.

Not really...but the pitch of this garages roof is pretty low...so there's not a ton of space up top.

placing this link here for inspiration  http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,3953.825.html

I'm trying to decide what I'm going to do for organization and storage.  I have some basic wall mounted shelving.  May just build more wall shelving and have some organization totes.  I want to keep as much perimeter floor space available as possible so I can park the bikes out of the way as much as possible when not in use.
