1970 Honda cb750K0
« on: February 26, 2019, 12:14:18 PM »
Thought I’d share a few phots of my K0, just completed. I’ve had this one for years, and took my time with it. The original owner’s took it apart in the mid 80’s and never started restoration. BUT, they bought all the parts. What came with it included all new HONDA body work, still in the original wrappers and boxes, a full set of new HM300 pipes (from Honda Canada) and lots of other shiny parts. Real NOS stuff. Years ago, I sent the carbs off to Mike Nixon, then stored them away. In the interim, I bought, built and sold a couple of other ones, always keeping the best bits for mine. The original seat pan got mailed off to an interesting guy in England (used to be on EBay as “Bob the Seat” who rebuilt it beautifully. I’ve rebuilt and restored 90% of the original parts.......
So this Spring the decision will be what to do with it!????! The Honda tank has never had gas in it, the HM300 pipes have never been “smoked”. Maybe i’ll Change out the pipes, hook up my remote tank and tune it? Then dry it out, install the new tank and pipes and keep in in the house? Or maybe, i’ll Just ride it?

Beautiful work.  As for what to do with it, what a wonderful dilemma!

Thanks for the positive feedback! I can spend hours just looking at it! The previous owner’s even collected bags of new Honda case screws and “8” bolts for the engine and frame. The “black top” Honda shocks were still in Honda bags/boxes! Frame number: CB750-1038169, Engine Number: cb750E-1038364.

I have an equally nice K1 I ride regularly, so not sure what to do with this. Definitely NOT FOR SALE!

Also very nice.

As for the 1970, what did you start with and do to get where you are with it now? It looks superb.

Started with boxes and mikcrates of grungy parts. BUT, two previous owner's bought pipes, complete tank, sidecovers, for ears and headlight bucket from Honda. All NOS badges, trim, wiring harnesses, cables from Honda, 35 years ago. Even the front brake hoses were there, in the Honda packages. The only repro part from Yamiya is the airbox. I powdercoated the frame and built it from there. I did buy “new” rims that are not correct, but recently picked up. Decent front one. If I find a rear, I may have them re chromed and do them again....... 90% is the original part refurbished. The front fender is only slash cut at the rear, and shoes some rust on the underside. I dismantled the tach and speedo, polished the lenses and put them back. Not perfect, but original. The engine had excellent compression and leakdown, so I did the top end, just cleaned, lapped, and did all the gaskets. Even kept the original seat pan. Picked away at it for four years...... still have to actually fire it up.

Picked away at it for four years...... still have to actually fire it up.

Is there any reason not to start it up? Is it destined to only be displayed and not ridden?

I'm just trying to make an eligibility call for BOTM.  Rule 8:  "If the motorcycle is a rebuild or restoration, it must be at the completed stage and RUNNING.  In the case of a show bike or museum piece, it will be at the Moderators decision to allow it into the competition and only providing that it was common knowledge that it was not intended to be a runner when it was nominated. Knowing many of these bikes are never finished in the owners eyes, we will take the owners word for it that it is in some form of completed stage."

I’m definitely firing it up and setting the ignition timing and carb sync. Everything is done and ready to make some noise. I may bolt on a set of used pipes and feed it from my remote fuel can as the tank has never been filled and the Honda HM300s have never been smoked....... the real decision will be to appraise, insure, plate and  ride?

As my son pointed out last summer, when I finished my Benelli 750 SEI, it hit the road a few days later and I’ve loving it! So what’s the difference? I have a K1, K3, K4 and added and F0 just recently, that he and I use regularly. Do I really need another ride? That’s the quandary.

P.S. Over many years, I’ve also collected a K8, K7, and K6. They’re completely restored and standing at the back of the shop. I bought all these bikes when they were trading for a few hundred bucks. And, my wife and I have been riding together forever, currently on a pair of ‘08 KLR650s. Too many bikes?? I don’t think so.

Well, let us know when it is a running bike.  I for one would like to nominate it for BOTM but it's not eligible under Rule 8, YET.

Three of those bikes, my son and I dragged home 30 plus years ago (he’s 42 now). I paid $150 for them and he’s still riding the K3 (his rat bike). Whenever he spots a part laying around in MY shop, that he likes, it ends up on HIS bike. All good!

I really wish you guys would stop showing all these spacious shop areas filled with great vintage stuff! My poor garage is crammed with stuff for all the projects I find myself into. Lots of woodwork, various repairs, etc. The K3 and the Ruckus are safely in there too, well protected except when they are out for some tropical air.
I guess I should evict the cars and take over the space but I think I would loose the vote.
