Any suggestions for long term gas tank storage
« on: November 07, 2020, 12:43:17 PM »
It looks like I am not going to take the bike out this year so I am going to drain the tank, and replace all the petcock parts. Any other suggestions for long term storage for the fuel tank? Should I rinse it out with an additive like mystery oil? Leave the cap open?

There is nothing to fear but fear itself . . . and trying to restore a cb350f

Add 1/2 can  two stroke oil to a litre of gas. Slosh it around every once in a while. Drain it out in the spring and rinse with fresh fuel.

I use 2 stroke oil too but I just pour in a full bottle only. I make sure it coats the entire inside and when I take it out of storage I just pour in the right ratio of fuel and then drain it in my chain saw gas can.

And keep the lid ON.

Store tank in a dry warm room if you do not have a warm dry garage for the bike.

Ok...$100 worth of metal rescue (which isn’t a rust preventative by the way) or $3 bottle of 2 stroke oil, hmm. Plus since metal rescue is water based you’ll likely get rust build up because of it at the very top underside of the tank. And it’ll evaporate so you’ll have to top it off every once in a while. Not a great idea.

I echo Dave's advice.  Metal Rescue is good for removing rust, but not a long term storage medium.  You could clean the tank and coat it with Caswell (epoxy based coating).  THEN, you could forget about it.  As long as you have bare metal inside the tank, I'd coat it with some petroleum-based product, like 2-stroke oil or a liberally-applied spray lubricant like WD-40.  Make sure there is no moisture in the tank before you put it away for storage.

Good point, there is one that leaves a zinc layer behind but it’s like 35 bucks a gallon. How bout just fill it with race gas?

Race gas would be good if it was ethanol free. Most race gas, however, is not.

I had a machinist tell me he used ATF on things that needed to be stored a long time. I have my 70 750 tank stored this way and no problems so far and it has been about 3 years.

Leaded race gas has no alcohol.
