Share your tail of a moron, I dare you to beat mine.
« on: September 10, 2007, 12:08:25 PM »
This month has been littered with moron type actions on my part.  I know I am not alone, but I think I take the cake.  After poking fun at me, feel free to share your tail of a moron.  ;D

I changed the oil in my 550 a couple weeks ago.  After putting about 50 miles on it I was rummaging around in my garage and noticed the empty oil bottle.  It was for 2 stroke motorcycle oil!  :o  What a moron.  ::)

I drained the oil right away and picked up the correct oil and replaced the oil filter.  I figured I would ride it for a couple hundred miles and replace the oil again.

Then (yes, it gets better) I was gassing up a few days later and spilled gas on my bike.  :-[  The gas looked like a waterfall as it poured all over the tank.  I cleaned up the gas as I indulged in a festival of cussing.

So I think the bad can't get worse, I was wrong.  My bike got loud and lost a lot of power.  WTF now?  So I am looking over everything and I remember someone on the board talking about the symptoms of their bike when one of their plugs was not firing.  Sure enough, one of the plugs was gunked up and.......smelled like gas.  So then it hits me.  When I spilled the gas some must have pooled up in the hole that the first plug goes into.  So I replace the plug and whaaa la, we are back on the road.

All of this brings me to yesterday.  I rode my bike out to the Anti Al-Qeada BBQ which is about 45 minutes away.  Check the bike over real well as this was to be my first time going any long distance and my first time on the freeway.

Half way there the bike just stalls.  I pull over thinking the worse and it turned out to be that I closed the choke all the way.  Wheew, that was scary.

Everything else went fine until the ride home.  First I start to loose throttle response, then she dies.  I check the choke, then the gas, the fuel line/filter, then the oil.  She was a bit low, but nothing that should have caused her to stall.  I fire her back up and she sounded fine.  So I ride another 5 minutes or so and now she got loud, real loud!  Loss of power, poor throttle response, could the plugs be gunked up again.  So I pull off into a parking lot and call for a plug wrench, wire brush, and some oil.  I waited about an hour and a half for my sister to show up.

I put in some oil, and checked the plug.  The plug looked fine.  ???  At this point I am really getting scared because I wouldn't be able to get a truck or trailer out to this parking lot until Wed.  So I try to start her again and she sounded great.  As I am riding I begin to wonder if it was the oil and she stalls again.

So I start from square one.  I check the gas, and I was empty!  :o  Turns out there is a ring in the tank that I though was where the gas line was.  It was rather dark on the side of the road and I though the tank was half full.

So I put the petcock onto reserve and rode over to the closest gas station.  She purred the rest of the way home.

This is the third time I have been trouble shooting and over looked the obvious.  From here on out, I triple check the gas first!

At least you didn't use a lighter to get a good look in the tank.

So are you feeling better now?  I usually have a lot on my mind when I do careless things like that.   I mean doing things like you said, not looking in a gas tank with a lighter.

I actually put my lighter under my seat rather than in my pocket when I ride in case I'm in an accident.  I don't want a grenade in my pocket.

Well, I'm sure MOST of us wouldn't admit to those things happening...."what me do something that stupid????...Do I look like a moron?"    :D  :D   Believe me, we've all done some incredibly stupid stuff.

I remember back in highschool checking the alternator belt tension on my VW bug...with the engine runnning! Finger shot up between the belt and pulley as fast as I could blink. Scared me so bad I was halfway to the hospital before I let go of it to take a look; it was fine. Miracle it didn't break.

Last week I damn near tore my shop to pieces looking for a missing triple tree bolt until I realized it was in my hand the whole time.  >:(

I know a guy that lost the tip (and a bit more) of his thumb between the chain and rear sprocket. He had the bike on a rear stand, in first gear, clutch engaged and touched the chain for some reason. It cut it clean off. This guy should have known better as he was an experienced road racer and works in the bike industry. Oh well............. ::) ::)

I'm just glad I'm not the only one with issues like that.  Smoke from the breather tube, smoke from the exhaust pipe, oil leak from under the sprocket cover, had to move needles all the way down and remove air filter to stop fouling plugs, front brake issues.  But I will say it runs great.

despite taking the rear wheel of twice, I failed to notice that the PO put the master link on wrong! (clip-type, he put outer plate on BEFORE putting pins thru chain, leaving only the CLIP to hold the outer race!)... Like I said, I didn't notice until it finally broke, in front of a group of Hardly riders!  :-[

Forgot to turn the gas off after the last ride of last weekend.  Sat morning, reached down and flipped the petcock, started up, took off, made it around the curve and down the hill.  The worst part is I didn't even have to think about what the problem was.  You'd think I'd learn. ::) ::)

my buddy bought an older shadow off his neighbor, a bike he was always wanting. he goes to the gas station to fill it up. he notices a tank on the side that says "reservior." he told me he thought it was a reserve tank for gas so he preceeded to fill it up until he noticed it was for the radiator.

What always gets me feeling retarded "learning challenged" is that I just cannot, for the life of me, remember to turn the pet cock on! lol.

For over a year now, my bike has been my daily driver, yet there is a good 1 in 3 chance on any given time I go for a ride that I space turning the gas on.

I've got it down to quite the technique now of flipping the pet cock to open without even having to look and at speed but you would think I could just REMEMBER TO TURN THE *&^$&#@?!?! THING ON TO BEGIN WITH!

my facial expressions in order, when the bike starts to die at speed --->  :o   ???  :P  ::)

I once spent three days looking for a "bolt" I had dropped when replacing my son's fork seals. Then I woke up that the missing fastener was the nut that had been sitting beside the wheel all along.

Oh where do I start!! You are not alone Cleveland.....

The one that almost out me in hospital was where after a long day removing the K2 engine, splitting the cases and putting it back together and then putting back in bike (15hrs in total) it was not midnight and I was at a friends house 50 miles from home. So I jump on the bike and speed back to Boston...happy that the bikes running so well after all that work....well finish the ride (which wasnt slow  ;)) and park the bike in the hospital bike park where i had been keeping it. As I was walking away I noticed a large pool of oil forming under the bike - I had failed to hook up the oil return hose at back of engine to oil tank  :o

Another "classic" include my first time installing new valve oil seals and after carefully reinstalling the cam, valve cover and installing engine I took it for a test ride...it was later on after engine removal (again for same problem) I had NOT tightened down the cam tower bolts  -all finger tight! So much for being careful and thorough!! Just as well the original problem hadnt been resolved  ;)

Or instlalling the front brake and after a few hundred miles discovering that I hadnt tightened down the 2 huge allen bolts that were slowly backing out into the wheel!!!

There are plenty more but Ill stop there....

cheers
Andy
