The neatness is still in the old ones, and will never be in the new ones..

You are reading a forum that will help you with endless upgrade fo an orig CB, they can be improved a bit..w/o losing their character.

Please give an example of the electrical system needing more room.. on a CB 750..

The thing that gives the old 750 its character is not the shape of the tank or fenders, or a 4 into 4 exhaust.  It is the look and shape of the engine.  As I've said a few times, to my eye the SOHC CB750 engine is the best looking Japanese in-line 4 ever made.  Unless they duplicate the look of that engine, any attempt at a new CB750 will fall flat.

Another aspect that gives the 750 its character is that it is an undersquare engine.  Compare its 61mm X 63mm bore and stroke to a 1990's era 750 Nighthawk's 67 X 53.

I don't see Honda replicating such a thing.  But I've been wrong before.

Personally I would not be in any way interested in a "new" CB750.   If I was I wouldn't be here ;D    I hate change  8)

I get on my 750, turn the gas on, put in neutral , turn the key, pull the choke out and hit the start button for 2-4 seconds and it starts.
Pull up the side stand, drop into 1st, let out the clutch and hit the road. Push choke back in when I hit 3rd. (Winter or Summer)

I need no more ;D

That new 1100F is a looker...  I might have to go see the 750 a few times before I could say yay or nay, but that new 1100F is definitely a looker.... mmmm...

The only reason I'd want a new one, is so that I could set the old next to the new. I Love my old SOHC's to death, as they have a class and character all their own. Like I tell people when they ask me why I like old bikes, Any a$*hole can buy a crotch rocket, I'd rather build/work on my own.

I, for one, love the look of the "new" 750...I think (aside from the previously mentioned dohc look) they have been quite faithful to (their own) tradition of aesthetics with the new model. The refined look of the signal lights, etc, the engine side covers, pipes, muted colors, gauges and bars all bear a close resemblance to the former. I don't think it's intended to replace the old models, but rather pay tribute to it, and I could easily see how from a collector's standpoint this bike would be a necessary addition to the collection...

Anyway, I don't really know anything so take this as such...

It`s neat and all, but IF they build it and IF I had the scratch I`d think about it BUT, ofreen nailed it....the engine on a sohc 750 is truly a thing of beauty. I can`t see that being replicated (nor would I want to).

I wouldn't kick that silver concept bike out of bed for eating crackers! Nor would I have a problem with the CB1100F. Frankly, what Honda offers now in the States bores the crap out of me and when I see what the home market offers I am just a little pissed.

Suppose I should be thankful. Not having the cash for a new bike and having a new/ old CB available here would send me into fits of envy.

There is something very real about owning a classic that simply cannot be replicated however and- like everyone here- I am in love with my old girl.

I actually think that's the problem with the bike market today, the guys who like what I call REAL bikes, walk into the bike shop, see plastic crotch rockets, cruisers, or full dressers, don't like what they see and go buy a classic -real- bike off craigs list. So the manufacturer isn't getting any feedback from them and keep churning out two wheeled things with no character.

Think that's why I like the Streetfighter style bike, it's closer to -real- bikes and not the same old chunk of plastic.

Last few times I went in after convincing myself I -NEEDED- a new bike, I saw absolutely nothing that I fell in love with, so went home and played with the old 1974 honda with no regrets at all.

I agree. Plus one has to admit the U.S. market is fickle. We like hatchbacks, then we don't. Honda offered that thumper 500 in the late 80's (almost bought one) then dropped it.

The Japanese misjudge us too; for ten or so years they sold the turbo Imprezza but was convinced it wouldn't sell here. Uh, they were wrong.

Granted, this is the car world but I think it applies across the board.

Ahem,... I beg to differ... After all, if you want a nice naked-not-streetfighter bike you can have the following - Yamaha XJR1300, Suzuki Inazuma 1400, any of the Ducati Monster, retro Triumphs, Moto Guzzi (Breva or Bellagio).. list goes on... It's not THAT bad... and then there are the japanese 400's....

Although, I would buy this CB1100f tomorrow - if i had the money yo do so  ;)

Don't forget that in the late 1960's it was the US that blocked the import of Japanese bikes with more than 750cc engines into the USA. A bit of protectionism, I believe.  Perhaps the Japanese have never forgotten?

Pretty sure that was in the 80's.  Which is why my 85 Cb700SC isn't a 750.

You have a point there.  Main problem is that I don't care for big bikes, Anything over 750cc is overkill for me.
Like I say, none of the bikes I've seen have made me want to give up the old 750.
I don't expect bike design evolution to stop at the 70's,  but to get what I like in a bike it's easier to grab a used one and modify it.

I do not recall there ever being a restriction on over 750cc bikes coming to North America, but there were tariffs.

However there were restriction in Japan and 750 bikes  were often the largest in that market.. That is why the Z-2 came about.

750cc is preferrred by some in a lot of places due to rising insurance costs, and 750,s being way cheaper to insure..in some locations...like here in B.C.

Yes, an answer worthy of a politician.  "No, No, we didn't ban it, that would be unfair.  We just made it only obtainable by the rich and privileged segment of the marketplace!  So, really it was the manufacturers that denied what you wanted, not us politicians. Aren't we a clever lot!?"

@TwoTired, I do recall the auto industry's cry for help in 1981.  As a result they got to put a tariff on the Japanese cars.  Foolish move in the long run.  What it did was raise the price to the consumer of Japanese cars, and when the tariffs were finally lifted (since the price was now established in the consumers mind) a profit windfall went to the Japanese manufacturers.  They also used loop holes to place assembly lines in the USA, but steered most of the parts manufacture to Japan.

What I am referring to is the restriction on motorcycle engine size of the 1960s.  This was done in response to a "concern" that Japanese products were not of high enough quality to be safe at that size.  (Compared to H.D. which of course everyone knew was safe because it was Made in America.  Any guesses who spear headed that concern?)  There was some truth to the quality issue, based on other products.  But of course Honda proved that theory completely wrong.  Remember the Japanese were "dumping" product into North America at that time trying to establish a manufacturing base - similar to what China is doing today.
