78K purchased this spring. It's a daily commuter, mostly highway, for about 100 miles too and from work. Yeah I know the winshield and carrier are cheesy lookin, but I'm in Iowa and the weather here sucks, and I don't fancy wearing my gun belt and other gear while riding. So the carrier gets to pack my bag.

Hi, I purchased my 1978 750 earlier this month off ebay.  Owner stated it didn't run, "prolly needs a carb cleaning".  I've been riding for about 8 years, only on newer sport bikes (2005 R1 for the street and 2006 R6 for the track).  I decided to get in to this bike as a winter project but I wanted to get it running before I put any time in to cosmetics.

When I got the bike home, it came with a new battery.  After prepping and installing it, I tried starting it.  Fuel was low, so I put it on reserve, and out came the gas!  The bike sputtered some but never started.  The gas was coming from the overflow drain.  I figured a carb rebuild was in order.  A friend of mine told me to not mess with it...he's an auto mechanic who's heavily in to bikes.  I waited for 2 weeks for a phone number of his carb guy, never heard back...so I tore in to them.  They were a mess and to make a long story short...I think I cleaned and reassembled them correctly.  Tonight I put them back on the bike, minus the air box to see if it would start.  No dice...battery was dead.  Strange considered it was fully charged a few weeks ago and I barely used it.

While hooking up the fuel line I noticed two inlet stems on carb #2.  See post...
http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=76199.0

while waiting for advice, I figured I'd introduce myself...back to the bike...

So, before I received an answer, I put the hose back where I found it...on the smaller inlet stem.  I put the petcock back to reserve and tried starting it....no dice.  The gas was leaking out of the overflow drain on carb 1...then 2.  I'm guessing these will leak first...especially on the kickstand.  My question is...why are they overflowing?  Is it because I have it on reserve vs. on?  Or do i have the fuel line on the wrong inlet stem on carb #2  (I claim innocent since this is how the bike came :) )?  Or is something completely wrong with the carbs?

Anyway, feel free to crack a joke at the newb!

PS
Love this site!  I've been lurking and reading for a few weeks and the content is well organized and very helpful.

First....I'm confused about the smaller inlet stem?
On my bike I have one fuel inlet on #2 Carb (same size stem as on the fuel tank petcock) and a small lil' hose...that I'm pretty sure is just a vent to atmosphere...as it was never hooked up to anything. (also on #2 carb)

If that's right...
They are probably leaking because your main needle & seat...isn't being "seated" by the floats.

1) Pull off the bowls...and make sure your needles & seat are spickn'span and in great shape.  A good check is to try and blow some air thru it (with your mouth) and see if the weight of the floats will seal it up/stop the air...or a light finger pressure.
2) Set the float height correctly..... 14.5mm from carb bowl ledge to top of float if I can remember correctly...and if they're both good! The carb shouldn't piss out fuel.  (unless of course there's a crack in the brass o/f tube on the bottom of the bowl.

Cheers! And keep us in the loop!

Yeah, I'm confused about the smaller inlet stem as well.  On the left side of carb #2, there are 2 inlets...like i said.  one fat, one skinny.  When I bought the bike, the tube on the petcock was connected to the SKINNY inlet.  So, instead of the carbs getting air from the air inlet, it was getting gas!?  Anyway, I just rebuilt my carbs and they are spotless.  I'm guessing the person who had the bike before me put the fuel hose on the wrong inlet.  Unfortunately, the fuel line from the petcock is too short to place on the fat jet.  So, before I do this, i need to make a fuel line.

there's no crack in the brass.  while i was cleaning them, i put the drain screw in and filled them up with water...not even a drip came out.

Thanks for you opinion.

Put the fuel line on the fat inlet and the bike started up after a few minutes!!!  I took it on its maiden voyage around my neighborhood tonight!

Any suggestions?

Yes, I would nicely like to suggest you post these questions in the tech forum thread...found here...http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?board=2.0

This thread is for registering your bike.

Please take no offense, I'm only trying to point you in the right direction to getting the answers you need for your technical questions.  :)

Good luck!

Thanks guys.  Yes, that is the original chrome strip as well as upholstery.  The bike was pretty rough when I got it, but at least it was all there.  I'm pretty happy with how it is coming out.

Nice looking bike eastside750. I highly recommend a Safety Foundation course to start out with. You not only get the feel of a clutch, and stopping on a smaller easy to handle motorcycle, insurance companies give you a discount with a Safety Foundation cert. A 500lb 750 is a lot of bike for anyone to learn on.
Either way, have fun, and keep the shiny side up. ;)

Your advice won't go unheeded. It's funny, but my friend won't let me have the keys until I finish the MSF course, which I've signed up for next weekend.
I have lots of experience on the roads (semi-pro cyclist), but the bike I'm used to weighs 14lbs!

Thanks for the advice, gents. In the meantime, I'm finishing up acquiring the necessary safety gear. And I thought cycling was expensive!
