OK - I think I have it figured out.  With the suggestion of Glenwood55Cameo over on Handatwins.net, my seals were once again upside down.  I searched a bit more online and came up with a diagram from All Balls showing that the Double Lip on the seal should be towards the Oil.  That makes much better sense, hopefully it is correct.

So, in short, This side should face the Oil:

On to the build!!!

Gersh

I will make it easy for you for the rest of your life.

All seals and all bearings should go in with the numbers and or letters facing the mechanic.

gersh, sorry to bug ya again on something that is simple, but how did you get your center stand off?  I have everything stripped down on my bike but can't get that damn stand off.  I removed the cotter pin and I tried hitting the retaining bolt/rod with a hammer, but she just won't budge.  Am I doing something wrong?

Fnut,

I am not sure!  What is left?  Do you need to use a punch to drive it out of the frame?

If you get a chance, could you measure your front forks for me and let me know the total length, upper tube length and lower leg length? I have a set of 35mm Betor forks I picked up but I need to check their length against stock fork lengths - and I don't have a set of stock forks.
(Did I mention that I bought a 1988 VFR750F last night?)

CBFnut - the forks and tubes measure out to 2' 4.5"

About those velocity stacks: the CV pistons in those carbs have very close tolerances, with no seals, and the dirt that comes from using open velocity stacks (i.e., no filters) will cause the bores of the carbs to score and damage the vacuum pistons. I saw many a 450 go to the junkyard because of this, especially in racing circles. My two cents: use filters, not stacks with screens.

I loved my 450. Those '66-'68 tanks were tops for crouch racing, too, with the knee grips! Stoplight-to-stoplight, those bikes ruled the summer nights until the CB750 came out, running heads-up with the British 650s of the day. The Nortons and Harleys could beat them, unless the 450 was geared down: then it held some real surprises!

Using velocity stack depends on where you live.
I you live on a dirt road you need filters.
This company now makes a filter that can be used with velocity stacks.

I am running one of Tintop's antipods on my CB750F - love it!

Thanks for the overall fork measurement - my Betor's measure 2 foot, 5 and 3/14 inches from the top of the tube (not counting the tube nut) to the centre of the axle. So I am going to be fine with these shocks.

Wow -

OK.  the bike had 2 wheels, and although not permant....  she has feet!!!!

I am sitting here looking over at it, and I can't believe I actually hit this point - mind you, she might grenade the first time I start her...

But anyway, here is the journey...

Here is the front end with the BCR Fork Shrounds and Horseshoe headlight Bracket:

This is good stuff!  The kit comes with the Upper Shrouds and Lower Shrouds.  The Lowers install over the lower fork legs, where either the fork boots or

wipers would normally click onto.  Make sure you use a piece of wood to bang them on, although the tops will not be visible once installed (the Lower Shrouds

will travel with the suspension underneath the Upper Shrouds).

I then fed the Fork Legs up through the Upper Shrouds and through the Triple Trees.  I am not crazy about how it all bolts together with the headlight

Horseshoe Mount, but I am going to talk to Benjie about how to make it all work....

Also, I was going to use Rock City Cycles' Front Fender, but the fit will probably not work with the Shrouds.  BTW - The RCC piece is gorgeous!!!! I will go

further onto this in another post.

Anyway, I wanted to see my headlight placement, so I installed it.

I like how its tucked up in the Forks, but I messed up and never shaved the Guage Mounts off the Top Triple.  Also, if you look at the tabs of the Horseshoe

Mount, they do not flow with the Fork Shrouds.  I am thinking I will use some spacers to push the headlight and mount forward off the shrouds and mount a

clock and temp gauge in the bracket holes - or scrap the Top triple and redo it without the mounts.

Sorry for the image on its side...

Money Shot!!!!!

New Shoes!!!! Dunlop K40's

Proud Papa!!!

New Hagons to match the BCR Fork Shrouds!

Assembling and torqueing the front Wheel, Brake and Axle

Oh yeah!!!!!!!!

A little Art House Shot....

Holy S#!+...  it actually looks like a Motorcyle!!!!!!!

Hopefully, the heart will be strong...

Limp Sasauge!!!

Ok.  Next post I have a serious question/problem with the rear Sprocket....  but first I want to do some research.

Talk soon

Looking good there!

I still love that tank colour a little bit more every time I see it.

Keen to see the front fender, still don't know what I am going to do there as the Betors have no fender mounts.

And I am pleased I somehow thught to cut the instrument mounts off my top triple before I sanded and polished it (as I am using a headlamp with a single gauge in it)!

Did you chrome plate your engine mounts?

Hey Gersh, I saw that PM and was scratching my head...  She is looking sick!  I love the color, the nice custom touches--all very tasteful and just seems to flow with the overall design.  Is that a headlight bucket original to the bike?  I wanted to call you this weekend, but got caught up in a bit of a mess at home.  If you're around tomorrow I will give you a ring.

Unc -yes, I had them chromed.  I forgot to add the lower rear triangular mounts to the chrome order, but when I put in the rear fender for chrome, I will have them done as well.

Anybody have any experiance with JT Sprockets?  I ordered what were supposed to be OEM rreplacements, but the spacing does not work at all.

Also, how do I drive out the 4 "carrier bolts", which seat into the cush washers, from the original Sprocket?  High heat and a hammer?

Thanks!

Alright, I got it.  I threaded the nuts onto the posts and using a BFH and a drift I was easily able to pop the posts out of the sprocket.  They are in the vibratory tumbler getting cleaned for the rest of the week…  I should have my new sprockets from sprocketspecialists.com by next week.  I have to send the ones I have back to Bike Bandit, as they are incorrect for this model, they have a 5-lug pattern and I need a 4-lug.
I started to  clean up the electrical system, starting with the coils.  They were pretty grungy…  I took apart everything and put the hardware, brackets and frames into the vibratory tumbler for a week to knock off the corrosion and give everything a shine.  Everything went back together nice.  I will at some point switch up to Dyna’s, but I want to make sure the bike will run before I go there.

Before:

After:

Sorry for the blur…  trust me, it looks much better!

I then started to assemble the main steps, kickstand and center stand:

I was not too happy with the BCR Horseshoe headlamp mount’s fitment with the Fork Shrouds.  Mind you, not in terms of quality, but rather in how it all fit together.  I found some 3/8” Chrome Tubing from Hillman (available at decent Ace, True Value, etc.) and used it to push the Horseshoe Mount off the tabs for the Fork Shrouds.  It worked great, and also acted to push my headlight bucket further away from the Gauge Mount Tabs on the Upper Triple Tree that I neglected to grind off.

I also sourced some Allen Key Sockets size m10 with 1.25 pitch large enough to accept the extra length needed to use the Chrome Spacer.  I got shorter Allen Key m10’s for the headlight mounts as well.  I like the look better than the oversized Hex Heads that I used before.

Now came time to mount up the BCR Exhaust.  I have to say, Benjie’s stuff is fantastic.  The exhaust is gorgeous and fits very well together.  I think I can get away with some Accoustiseal (spelling?) instead of clamps as the joints fit so well.

Here is what it looks like:

Some more:

You will see here that the rear pegs were not on.  The exhaust is meant for a single seat bike.  To get around this, I again used 3/8” Chrome Spacers to get the mounting tabs proud of the Footpegs.  The peg folds and unfolds perfectly, and mufflers have a nice solid mount.  I will update with more pics later, as well as the BCR Brake Scoop Installation.
