Mystery Stuff on my Bike...please advise
« on: June 23, 2008, 11:41:29 PM »
I started the teardown of my '77 750K tonight.  When I removed the airbox, I noticed the following:

This looks like it should be hooked to something, but it aint.  It is right below the battery box:

This had nothing connected to it (bottom rear of engine):

Well we have enough 750 experts on here, won't be long now.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Oh yeah.  Almost forgot...what the hell are these?

I found them on the floor after I removed my engine using the "lay the bike on its side and curse and fight for an hour" method of engine removal.  I had the clutch cover off, so I'm thinking they came from there.

I also learned that its a pretty good idea to remove the chain before attempting to remove the engine.  I ended up cutting the chain off.  I'm just going to jb weld it back on when I'm done with the rest of the bike :).

The metal cylinder is most likely one of the knock pins that go between the cover and the engine.  One of the screw holes will have an area machined around it to accept this pin, which ensures that the cover is properly positioned on the engine.

Not sure about the rubber and the felt ring.

2nd Photo goes to oil tank.

Thanks guys!

I must have pulled the hose off the engine breather spigot when I pulled the airbox out.

It looks like a PO bypassed some of the vapor recovery stuff.  It's all going away anyway, so I guess I don't need to worry about it.

By the way, I said I had the clutch cover off.  I meant the shifter cover.

Yup, knock pins there too.  Two on the clutch cover, two on the shifter cover, one on the alternator cover.  All five are 8mm x 14mm, part number 94301-08140.

cheers

So, you're just going to dump combustion byproducts into the atmosphere?  :'( Or do you have another plan for recovery?

Hard "plastic" bit may be the sealing rubber (#2 in this diagram). Blocks off a small hole in the case under the shifter cover.

30 year old rubber and hard plastic have a lot in common.  replacing rubber is good.

the human race doesn;t need your help, but the doomed existence of the contents of your wallet will be slightly hastened by the mpg lost from the removal of the scavenging system designed for your bike.

good luck either way

I used a zip tie to reattach my cam chain when I cut it off. I'm gonna fire it up tonight and take my newborn for a ride.

If you guys think JB Weld is too weak, would it be better if I superglued it?  That stuff is pretty strong.

I do like Chad's zip-tie idea.  I'd probably use two though since the load on the drive chain is probably higher than on the cam chain.

Zip ties on a cam chain??  Talk about overkill.  Just use twist-ties like everyone else!

Just gonna dump them into the atmosphere.  I'm trying to speed up the human races doomed existence.

Gee...thanks for that. So if you're aiming to speed up the human race's doomed existence then I take it you're planning to procreate? Or have you already blessed the world with your spawn? Think they want to breath that crap? Do you have a car or truck or another bike? Are you ripping the pollution control systems out of them too? I hope so because doing it to just one bike is kinda like thinking small in the grand scheme of the doom of a species.  ::)

Wouldn't the JB weld section of the chain wear more slowly than the rest and lead to a tight spot?  This could cause excess noise or vibration.
