Here are couple pics. The first two show gear teeth before and after copious wd40 and brushing. The last is the sorry state of the starter clutch. I will have to disassemble and see if I can get the rust off. Hopefully it's just surface and not affecting much.

Lower cases completely stripped and into the shop for hot tank, blasting and flushing. Two weeks and two bills for that. I know, that's a lot, I just didn't want to put it in my bathtub. It needed to be blasted as the other cases are done and it would look just downright silly not to do the whole thing before paint. Also ordered:

1) primary chain
2) cam chain
3) cam chain tensioner assembly
4) rings/pin clips for the Ninja pistons
5) Cometic gasket, copper

Got the Barnett clutch kit today. Will get delivered this week the R/D springs, seats, keepers.

I'm looking at tires and it is down to a) Avon Speedmaster & SM II or b) Dunlop K70. Any thoughts?

Isn't the cb550 able to use the cb650 head gasket?
If so you areat least 1mm under the max piston OD that a cb650 head gasket can run.

Good to hear progress.

Yea, I don't/didn't about the 650 head gasket. Good to know for the future. It's coming along, a bit at a time.

Going over the Barnett clutch kit and noticing the friction disks, 6 and 1. Six are at 2.7mm and the 7th is 3+mm. Looking through the shop manual for orientation of the disks and measuring the old ones, I couldn't determine where the thicker friction plate goes in the stack. The manual doesn't mention a different thickness for the friction disks. Anyone got a clue?

lower ring placement means its not subject to combustion flame so rings can keep tension better but can also mean it doesn't get 'gas assist' to help seal.
 I would run it.

I got a call from ken at total engine today and my lower cases are ready way sooner than he thought, so I get them back tomorrow. I just realized today that I haven't made the decision of porting the head myself or sending it to mrieck. Think I will give mike a shout to see how long it would take him. Only thing is now I'm getting antsy to get it together. But, I think I might be happier with his work than my novice hacking...

NICE!
Going with all new bearings and seals I assume?

You WILL NOT be displeased sending your head out to get a port job.
I have never even heard a grumble about Mikes work either, so good choice (IMO) on choice of person to do the work.

What type of cam you gonna run?

Yeah, all new rubbers everywhere, en route from western hills. I've got a 650 cam to go in it. I re-read paulages hybrid thread last night (about 16 pgs anyway) and am wondering now if the 550 carbs are going to be sufficient. He used 750s but was at 718cc vs my 573cc. I think I'll start with the 550s and go from there. So, I have on hand (NEW):

1) clutch kit
2) valve spring kit from r/d
3) cam chain
4) primary chain
5) cam chain tensioner
6) new rings/clips

I'll be assembling the bottom half as soon as I get all the seals and the rest of it within the next three weeks, after I get my head back.

Found a shop to blast/powder the frame and swingarm which I'll take in on Monday. This stuff has to happen down in Iowa, as is that's where the rest of the bike(s) is/(are). I might have the guy fab something up for a seat pan to do the custom seat I have in mind... I had bought a 12x24" piece of 16ga. steel to try and do it but I am just not getting the time time around the tools I need to do it (as I would be learning along the way)...

Mike Rieck has got the head and is working on it....

Need to get the tank painted and figure out quite a few of the final design details, ie lights/signals, wire harness placement, misc...

Also picked up some new Progressive shocks courtesy HavocTurbo. Taking the swingarm to get blasted tomorrow (for that shiny bare metal finish look) and will send it into Hondaman for fitment of bushings, etc...

Anybody know what kind of clay I should use to measure piston to valve clearance?

I can't wait to get this thing together.

We used to use silly putty....
Never had problems with it sticking.

Shocks will ship anyday now.... They sent me the dual eyelet ones first!!!

Got the frame and swinger back from powder coating. See below. Sending swinger out for bronze bushing treatment...Also laid some enamel on the triples and indicator light cluster/stem. Just waiting now for the head to come back from Mrieck.

I've been researching and trying to decide between points-Hondaman ignition module or Dyna S/coils/wires...As far as I can tell, if I lighten the electrical load a bit, the Dyna set-up would be great. People also seem very happy with Stock points-Transistor set-up...Anyone care to weigh in on this subject??

Any pics so far?

I'm antsy to see that thing together!
Any chance of a video, or sound clip of the motor running?
I'd LOVE to hear those pistons running in your motor!!

Dude, I know. I am antsy as well. It is coming along super slowly because I am just buried with non-motorcycle projects. I've been planning my own business for over a year and it has finally come to the moment of truth. So I've been meeting with bankers, architects, lawyers, realtors etc in addition to my full time gig, not to mention the wee little ones at home. But, I have been trying to do a little bit at a time. Hondaman has my swingarm, and I am rebuilding forks at the moment (actually the same fork lower has been clamped in the vise downstairs for going on three weeks now...) The Good News is that my regular job-type-job will soon be at an end and I am planning on the first two days of my new freedom to consist of putting this motor back together. The parts are all there and waiting. So tune in soon and don't give up hope....The Hybreed will soon fire! Or be on fire. Or set my shop on fire. Or....
