I ended up having to make up my own baffles, aluminium end pieces with perforated stainless steel inners. I crushed the inners end piece and then covered them in glass matting.


I don't quite understand the part about crushing part of the baffle. Could you explain that a little?

i was wondering the same thing!  i was thinking it might help aid in backpressure since the exhaust pulses will have to travel on the outside and inside of the perforations, causing a more uniform pulse in each pipe?  please explain!

Thanks again for the comments. This project is starting to drag and I need to get it finished soon so I can start the next.


I wish that I could give you the scientific reasoning but I have no idea. What I did was copy other images of end baffles. These seem to be blanked off towards the exhaust valve end. I guess this stops the power pulse taking the easy route straight through the pipe, creating a bit of back pressure. It also forces the sound waves to bounce off the internals of the exhaust, so they lose energy and db.

The engine revs better and cleaner with the baffles in than with them out.

Here is a pic showing the crimped end.

I hadn't looked at this one in a while, you've made a lot of progress.  I really like the nose cone and its faired in headlight.

any chance you'd make these baffles for other pipes??   ;D  i like the look and sound!!  maybe they could tone down carpy's pipes a bit and make them even meaner sounding!!

Well as you guys know, the last parts of any project are the longest and most painful.

Building and binning various glass fibre seat pieces, trying to get the paint just right...failing and doing it again, getting the cables routed correctly, finding that they are too long, cutting, soldering etc etc etc. It's never just right is it?

Well I'm so close to finishing now. Connect up horn, indicators, and warning lights. Make up bracket for vintage black & silver number plate (illegal but so is the size), apply tank decals....final polish. Anway I took these pics as I am going to enter it into a MCN competition, see how it goes. It won't win but it may get a bit of interest.

The Bikini fairing has gone for now as it was in a poor state. I may look at a polished aluminium one that looks pretty cool. Anyone know where I can get aluminium side panels from? Best quote I have had is £340 from the same guy that shaped the seat hump. I probably will go for it in the end, he's an absolute wizard at beating aluminium, the brake light recess looks terrific in the flesh.

I think you could go a bit lower with those headlight brackets; that headlight still looks a bit perky!

Yes it looks better (to me anyway) with the light lowered. Still sexy as hell either way.

BOTM???? Crikey it would be an honour to be entered when it is finished but I have a lot yet to do. I'll try to get the first lot done by end of next week. I don't think its ready to go head to head with other bikes, she hasn'y even passed teh MOT yet.

Number plate hanger
re route cables
change brake lines to single into twin
hand polish all the bits that have been hanging on the bike
ride it to a nice location and take some phots

Then for the winter:
Alloy bikini fairing made
Alloy oil tank battery box combo to get rid of the side panels
Aloy race mudguard
Lighter 520 chain and sprockets
Newer forks (that still look old) and newer discs and twin pot brakes (for that stopping feeling).

Just found your post Skunkmiester, great build.

I'm about to re-install my freashly coated Swarbrick's on my 550.  Your baffle is similar to what I planned to do, if they prove to loud. ::) ::) ;D

Not a good day.
Thought I would give her a quick spin around the block prior to getting he MOT'd.

Starts off ok then get a horrific clanking coming from the gearbox. Sounds really bad.  Also I cannot get it into neutral.

I can start off in 1st gear with the horrendous clanking and then change up to 2nd and the bike moves forward a few inches and then the transmission locks solid.

Also I forgot to put on the breather hose to teh rear of the engine so I coated the swingarm and wheel with splutter of oil.

And then she went onto 3 cylinders and I cant get no 3 cylinder to fire again.

Oh the joys of bike restoration. The gears issue is worrying me though, may be an engine out job.

Wow thanks Zaipai, I'm amazed that you think it's good enough.

Every time I look at the bike I see something that needs changing. I think I am going to do another strip down of the bike this winter. cut the side panel tabs off the frame, make an ali oil tank / battery case. Weld on steering damper mount. New shocks and forks and old looking but better brakes. 520 chain and lighter wheels, and ali mudguard.
I'm not happy with the bike to be honest. I'm pleased with the look but the sum of all parts has dissapointed me.

Thank you for the nomination though.

Trouble is that I have another project to do. 1992 Fireblade, but with Carbon fairing and standard stickers so it looks standard from a distance, but special close up.
Underneath teh clothes  however are Ohlins front and rear, magnesium wheels and modern brakes. And possibly a blue printed more modern blade engine pushing at least 150bhp. Don't know why but I really fancy the idea.

Another way to spend money tha I don't have :)

Dude, from where I sit, the pictures of your bike are awesome. I am not the only one that was going to nominate it. In fact I was just first to do so is all. I understand, really I do. I love how my bike turned out however there are a bunch of things I have to do to it this winter to make me stop cringing when I see it the bike in the day light.

You are very modest however that bike is just great and defiantly worth nominating.

Do you have pictures of the way your 92 is setup today?
