:D  no J, that's no problem.  I'm surprised it's updating your home page....  Strange settings you must have.

I use twitter a bit and find it much more valuable than Facebook as it's quite a different animal.  I love the nexus of eLearning, social media, and technology.  With Twitter I can "follow" people with the same interests, post my challenges and like this community get pretty instant responses.

Is there such a thing as too much information?
I don't belong to Facebook or myspace, my friends send me invites all the time.

That is one way to use it, but I don't think any of you would care if I told you I just ate lunch and put my boys down for a nap...

Twitter is useful to me as it aggregates information related to topics I want to follow.  I use the application TweetDeck to filter the posts of people I follow.  I get most of my news headlines there and follow links to stories I'm interested in.

I also have a couple active searches which relate to things I'm interested in like eLearning, Web 2.0, and Maine. If people post messages that pertain to these topics then I can read them.

My posts to Twitter have provided direct responses from my state Senator, the lead software architect for Twitter (happened this morning) and many others who I would not have an opportunity to meet personally but have communicated in this format with to mutual benefit.  It happens that the Twitter developer is also a leading SharePoint developer which I'm mulling over pushing enterprise wide at work (9,000 employees).  I posted about my mullings, he has an active search open for SharePoint allowing him to see my post, and he reached out to me to share his thoughts, and suggest we follow up on a webcast if needed.  -- and he's not trying to sell anything --

It's just a different way of communicating with a group of likeminded (around a single subject) people  // just like this forum : )

Haven't thrown mine away, just don't keep it on, want to make sure it has a fresh battery in case of emergencies (like when the beast conks out by the side of the road)  :P . Feels like a leash especially when I have the work phone on my person.

Why would someone want to do this?  Who cares if someone you know is running late, or going to sleep, or having coffee?  Same thing with texting - I don't want that much contact.

Maybe I'm just a hermit ;)

Twitter, verb (intransitive) (of a person) to talk in an excited or nervous manner.

The vernacular is something like, "He's a train spotter, a real twit"

Twit: Noun (UK) A foolish or annoying person.

So to call it Twitter isn't even ironic sarcasm or some sort of in-with-it satire on the whole interweb communication thingy.

Sorry, it's a 21st century concept that I just don't care about, nor do my friends (real people).

If this stuff is sweeping the world it's just another indication of why the whole western economy is in bloody meltdown.

Hype over substance is what I call it!   Facebook/Bebo???   Join a club, get out and met some real people, go surfing, join a bike club,  learn to fly, do something, FFS!

Rant over...for the mean time!!

Rant all you want.  I don't care if you don't get it, and you obviously don't.

Meet some real people?   ::)

My use of Twitter has allowed me to have 2 way communication with my state senator, with someone I admire in the eLearning world, communicate with colleagues I have met at various web development and eLearning conferences, and stay informed.

News breaks faster on Twitter than any other information channel.  If you don't care about news that's fine.  Brusfires in California?  Check.  First video of crash landing plane in the Hudson?  Check.  Recent earthquake felt across Europe?  Check.

Many public service / enforcement organizations across the US are looking into the viability of Twitter as a communication means.  In Maine, many services from the Forestry Dept. to the local volunteer fire depts, game wardens, state troopers, still have poor intercommunication means.  A closed Twitter loop is being looked at to send messages to all that need to be informed of a particular event.  It's cheap.  You just need a server connected to the internet, and you can run a secure communication network without expensive interconnected communication systems.

At work, I work for a semiconductor manufacturer, we are looking at connecting Twitter to our automation systems.  All of our really expensive machines know their status but now it takes a person to look at that machine (usually our one armed robots which are in the photolithography area) to determine if it is operating within specification.  We look quite often, but if the machine senses something that isn't too far out of spec to warrant a shut down (which it does) but isn't perfect either, it could Twitter a message to the floor technician's Black Berry.

At its root it is a communication system limited to 140 characters which has full smart phone integration.

People use it as a social communication medium.  If you hate your cell phone fine by me.  If you hate communication that isn't person to person fine as well.

Don't insult people that enjoy communicating in a variety of ways, and with emerging technical platforms.  Your equation of the use of Twitter with being a shut in recluse is stupid and ignorant.  I also have a very demanding work and home life with 2 young kids.  I can't fly across the country to talk to a mentor in my field, but I can go on line and communicate in many ways.  At lunch when its warm enough, I get on my bike and ride.

Twitter, the Internet, Cellphones, and the freaking wire service are communication services for !)(*&@#(*^&$ sake.  The hype is excitement over their possibilities.

This forum is also a great communication service, bringing together people with a common interest to communicate and share knowledge and have fun sometimes too.

Twitter and other communication systems/services aren't exceptionally different.

Isn't there also a feature on twitter that uses your phone to synchronize your position in the city with your cell phone's GPS and broadcasts it to specifically allowed friends?

You can twitter that you're headed to lunch/coffee and if anyone wants to join you feel free, and this service tells people where you are and how long until you get there.

It's pretty neat if you ask me.  As for people who think it's a stupid fad, remember even the telephone was new technology at one point and Luddites likely said the same thing about telephones.  "Why use the telephone when you can just pop in for a visit?  That telephone thing is just plain stupid."  This was in the days of REGIONAL communication...  Telephones have simply become cumbersome in this age of GLOBAL communication (I regularly communicate with people overseas who I would never have the chance to talk to otherwise!)

The internet is made up of "real people" from all over the "real world" who communicate in "real ways".  You may not care if someone is late for work or heading to bed, but what if a friend did well on a job interview (or got laid off)?  What if an old friend wrote that they are coming to your town for a conference?  Think of it this way, Twitter is a way for people to remain in touch without being intrusive.  A telephone conversation can be both time consuming and prying.  Sharing information on Twitter is neither of these things, and allows people to get a glimpse of your life.  Sure Twitter can seem to be time consuming...  But just think, you can spend 20 minutes a day updating your Twitter and broadcasting information to ALL your friends, or you can spend 20 minutes in one telephone call updating one friend.  Using Twitter allows you to keep more friends informed more frequently.  If anything it makes it easier to maintain close friendships!

It's all about streamlining and efficiency.  Welcome to the 21st century.

Couldn't they have at least come up with a better name for it.  It sounds like you are engaging in an activity where you are not "master of your own domain". ;D  For every person like Dan who has found a productive and useful way to use the new technology there is someone else who can't wait to tell us 25 things about himself that we really don't care to know.  Personally, I have little interest in being that connected.  I value privacy and quite time in front of the fireplace with a book more than being "plugged in".  I have no interest in the daily minutia of my friends lives or reading the equivalent of post-it-notes on the fridge.   If anybody wants to get a hold of me they can call my cell, I keep it at hand 24/7.  That's  enough for me.  News, I can get fast enough from other sources.  If there is a plane crash in New York or a mudslide in California unless I am personally affected it matters little whether I hear about it 10 minutes after the fact or 2 hours or even the next day.  I suppose that as with most technology it will eventually become so pervasive that most of us will have to adopt it but that day has not yet come for me.
