LED tail light *new* Update: 4-22-09 Vids & PICS
« on: March 29, 2009, 02:02:05 PM »
Ok so i have been wanting something to do on my bike that meets these goals:
1. Less draw on the charging system
2. makes my bike safer! and esayer to see!

so with thsoe goals in mind i came up with a LED tail light... i was really fed up with the over priced H-D led tail lights that were small and didnt take into account that i might want to take it apart and fix it!!

so i went to harbor freight tools and got a "trailer wireing kit" $47
went to "michaels" kraft store and got a hot glue gun and some hot glue... $15
of course by now you should have a cheep soldering iron and some electrical tape (right?)

it just so happens that the "main" cluster of LEDs (red) is the same size as the "round" lens on the cb750 and the tail lights have a built in licence plate light (white leds) and a side marker cluster (only on one side though * i will explain how to fix that)

So here is how i started:
1. i removed the tail light backing plate from the tail light mount.
2. next remove the old wiring..
3. remove the old reflector
4. use a razor blade and cut back that odd shapped rubber gasket in the middle and reinstall it with some black rtv to keep it in place and seal out moistier.
5. open up the LED tail light
6. open up the second led tail light
7. at this point your going to use the one with the licence plate light and cut the brown/ white leeds and splice in the "side marker" from the other tail light
8. once that is done "hot glue" the extra side marker light to the back side of the base for the led big cluster ... matching how the other side looks...
9. now cut up the old houseing from the led tail lights (black plastic.... and hot glue a make shift seperator for the licence plate light so you dont get "red" led light lighting up the licence plate :)
10. remember that old wireing... (hope you didnt throw it in the trash) reuse it and splice it onto the cluster... and add in a "Green" wire (i used the white one) for the ground and put a male flat spade connector on it...
11. now test fit everything the idea is to have the "main" LED cluster be HOT glued into the red tail light LENZ!!!! at this point you might have to do some trimming on the cluster edges to clear way for the 4 screws that hold the lenz to the tail light backing plate..
12. now that your satisfied that it looks good start glueing... make sure that you dont get too much glue down in front of the led cluster...
13. at this point i decided that i wanted to make sure NO moister got in this thing so i check all gaskets and seals. and resealed or hot glued any holes that existed!
14. now your ready to put the thing together! feed the 3 wires though and get ready to hot glue the 3 wires though the rubber gromet that you saved from the old setup! (you did remember to reinstall that right ;)

there you go! now tighten up those 8mm bolts that hold the backing plate to the mount and remove your licence plate to re-hook up the 3 leeds and your ready to go... enjoy the safer and brighter tail light...

On a side note here are some Amp readings i took before and after :
STOP light: 2.07A (1157)
Tail light: .550mA
(old setup licence plate light would get MUCH dimmer when brake was off) :(

LED light:
STOP light: 255.7mA
Tail light: 161mA
 BOTH: 389mA

now my other idea is NOW there is some freeeeeed up Amps on the charging circut to charge a cell phone or have other accessories or if you just want to have your alt last longer because there is MUCH less load...

Food for thought:
1156 turn signal: 1.63A
my next project LED turn signal 99.6 mA

on the 77 cb750 the front turn signals are also "marker lights" thats 3.26A

first picture is tail light.
2nd picture is stop light

circled in blue is the area you need to cover up with the plastic
this is what it looks like on the bottom

here is the bare LED board that your going to "hot glue" into the tail light lenz

cut the areas in red off and splice in your side marker lights on the wires that are circled in blue!

OK OK here is the pictures you have been waiting for:

picture 1 is the "side" marker led light...

picture 2 is the BRIGHT brake light...

notice how this is full daylight with a digital camera and it still looks really bright imagine how this looks at night... oh and the package says: DOT legal... this is the same light config that comes on the big rig deisel truck trailers... :)

Nice work, and a good write-up. :)  You should post this in the "Tricks & Tips" section, or request that it be added to the FAQ, because LED lights are definitely a frequently asked question.

Is there any chance you have before and after pictures?  If not, how about some shots taken at night.

picture 1: circled in red is the rubber gromet that you will want to save to isolate your wires coming thought the metal backing plate:

picture 2: the light is turned off and installed!!

picture 3: close up of the light its self you can kinda see the LED clusters

the main goal of the project was to show that you can keep you bike upto date and modern and stylish withough spending lots of money and at the same time making it safer to run! hope you guys enjoyed this project let me know (PM me) or email me if you have any questions...

i really dont have any before and after pictures i sorta remember that i might want to take some pics after i started this project ...

but you can go out to your bike and see how your stock tail light would look and then go check out a "semi-truck" trailer with LED tail lights to get an idea on how bright this would look!!

and i'm not sure how i would submit that to the tips and tricks??? or even have this in the FAQ??? maybe you guys can help with that?

If you want to put it in the Tips & Tricks, just copy and paste it into a new post in that forum.  I'll request that this be added to the FAQ, so you don't need to do it.

Very clever, love the power saving. :D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Looks like resistors on the board to me.
So you broke your circuit to test the amperage?

LED's require a resistor to operate on 12V without drawing so much current that they self-destruct.  The resistor you're refering to is so that a standard (machanical bi-metal) flasher "sees" enough current to flash normally which is why most people using led's in turn signal applications use an electronic flasher.

Although I'm personally not a big fan of the "look" of LED's on vintage machines, I can't fault the safety factor and there's something very cool about your adapting LED's to original housings.

I'm looking forward to your turn signal installation so I can PDF this entire thread and save it.

Thanks for sharing your work!   :)  RR

see there i posted the amps readings :) before and after and no the bike doesnt care as far as flashers goes on a tail/ stop light! and it looks AWESOME at night it lights up my whole yard with RED LIGHT it almost hurts your eyes to look at it with the brake light on at night! big improvement over stock.

here is a picture of my relay center i just made for the headlight relay
it has a relay for the High / Low and it even has room for an extra relay and fuses :)

i was doing the math today and besides the spedo / tach , headlight, coils if i run good relays the whole bike harness will not carry more than 5amps and i will have a 30 amp fuse for the relays! in a seperate harness! so the whole bike will be like modern and the switches on the bar will be just switches no full battery amps!

I am sorry if I missed the fact you posted your amp readings.

AWESOME.
Bright, efficient and cleanly executed.
Cut and paste this into Tips and Tricks for sure.

here is another pic of my relay center upclose my tool kit doesnt fit in my holder and so i thought this was a good spot for the 2 relays so drilled some holes in the bottom and hot glued the "relay harness" into the bottom then i used some "black plastic" from the tail light housing from the led tail light project and made a devider.. it works good and looks clean clears the seat and makes a neet "click" when you turn on the bike when the head light comes on :) oh and the headlight is MUCh brighter :)

I love your relay positioning, i can see some electrical work in my future ;D
Might reposition my fuse box there as well, i`ve already updated to blade style fuses

Great job, eVo! Nice planning: if you go me some dimensions, I could make a circuit board up: maybe we could create an SOHC4 taillite kit?
