The main fuse is the one with a red wire connected to each clip and needs to be 15A...are you sure it's O.K. and no power at one or both ends ?  If no voltage at fuse, check the red wire at the solenoid...it needs to be on the same post as the + wire from the battery....
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Fixing that burned ground wire might be helpful.

Its just the outside cover a bit, but I will look at it tomorrow with a new attitude.
Not much point cutting and splicing in a new one if it's just going to melt again?

What wire exactly feeds the top fuse with power when you turn key switch.
I have power at the connection to the bottom of fuse box.

Hi Seaweb,

In your fuse box, the "bottom", if you will, of your 15A fuse location is a red wire...... this wire is coming directly from your ignition switch up front.  The "top" of this particular fuse is a red wire that leads to connections that go to your rectifier (at this point it may change to a red/white wire and also has a branch/joint that leads to your solenoid/magnetic starter switch....... which should be a red wire, but again could possibly be red/white.

In your photo, the large cable leading forward goes to the starter.  That should be on the left hand post of the solenoid as we are looking at the photo.  The right hand post of the solenoid should have the short battery cable going to the positive post of the battery.... also at the right hand post of the solenoid should be a red/white wire and a red wire which does not have to be connected to anything else.

It sounds to me like polarity got momentarily switched and there's a strong chance your rectifier has been toasted....... sorry :(

I hope this helps you and does not confuse you.  These particular wires are not difficult to track down and work with....... I have learned this and I am really Red/Green color blind for real.

PS Yes, I can see in 1 of your photos, the regulator is OK..... I see that green wire curling back up to the 1st tab, then white, then black...

anyone have a rectifier for sale?

The big question is how did this happen all of the sudden? I did "for a split second" connect a battery charger up the wrong way........1 spark.  Would that have done it?

Well,

Sometimes they survive and only need all the connections cleaned because they "smoke" over with heat oxidation.  If you have a decent multimeter, they can be tested after cleaning the connections.

If you do have a multimeter, TwoTired or someone similar can walk you through the testing.  I can't, I'm not that good.  Somewhere on this board I have read of TT walking people through this.

I wouldn't scrap out the rectifier yet...... sadly, they are not cheap.

Is there any chance you may have put the solenoid in back to front ?
I don't know what result that may cause.....

Definitely putting battery charger on backwards will fry that earth wire- so it may not be earthing very well now - you need to replace it or at least trace it to make sure it has not melted anywhere else or affected other wires....

I want someone to send me your fried or broken rectifiers.  I know they can be rebuilt.  I just need a few to experiment with.  There is a chance that you will never see it again.  Is there a market for these things?  Does everyone want a few spares around?

Check under the ignition to see if that's where your break is. I put the battery in backwards on another bike, and that's where my wire burned out. I had the same symptom from reversing my battery, burned green wire.

Here's how it all washed out.

I don't think the battery was charged up enough, along with a weak ground on main harness.

Charged up battery last night, hooked it all back up again this morning and it turned over fine with no heated wires.\

Thanks again everyone for the assistance. ;D

Oh...EDIT...one of the fuses was blown, so that was the lack of power.

Your bike will run just fine with a burnt out rectifier, it just won't charge, unfortunately.

95% of automatic chargers have short circuit protection....I doubt that would be your issue.
