Well, I got some more bad news.  The machinist looked at my head.  It had 4 bad exhaust valve guides, 1 bad intake valve, and 1 bad exhaust valve.  And, all of the seals were bad.  It appears that when the engine was "rebuilt" (including big bore kit and porting the head), said builder never inspected the valves!!

Back in action after engine surgery!!

Bad valves replaced, valve seals replaced, head decked, new seals, new gaskets, new M3 Racing cam chain tensioner, Cycle Exchange valve cover with cam tower stabilizers, engine re-painted, Joker side covers installed, front caliper rebuilt, and voila:

The motor pulls stronger than before.  Lots of torque.  I just took her for a brief shakedown ride and cleaned her up before I go for a longer ride.

Thanks, Guys. It was a great feeling riding it today. I really like the cast color paint and black
Joker covers together.

I wish we were all closer in terms of geography. That would be incredible to have our own rally. I would love to have the 750 in SEA to ride with all of the guys up there.

Took the K7 out for a ride with the VVMC.  Well part of it.  I took my own ride up to Venice and for part of the ride.

The Good:  The engine feels awesome.  Loads of mid-range torque, and it runs so smooth -- just keeps pulling and pulling.  It's been starting easy and running great.  The suspension is surefooted and the brakes are consistently strong -- even with the stock rotors (haven't gotten around to swapping out for the EBC rotors yet).

The Not-so-Good:  I get a solid side dip and my plastic headlight bucket broke.  This left the headlight dangling down (no zip ties with me or anyone else).  I limped the K7 back down the coast from Marina Del Rey to the freeway and back to my garage.  Then I hopped on my "back-up" 550K1 and caught up with the ride group.

I suspect that the Truck-Lite LED bulb housing is too heavy for the plastic headlight bucket to handle.  I estimate it is 2-3 times heavier as it has a aluminum housing.  I think the plastic fatigued and finally gave up.  I have to buy another headlight bucket.  I'll probably switch back to a halogen bulb until I can reinforce a plastic bucket with fiberglass to handle the added load of the Truck-Lite.

Some more shots of the "new" motor.

Just purchased a metal GL1000 headlight bucket -- it says it will fit a standard 7" halogen bulb -- so I'll give that a try so I can retain the heavier LED Truck-Light light bulb housing.  I think that will be better than trying to reinforce a plastic headlight bucket with fiberglass on the mount points.

Yep two heads are better than 1, glad I could help out.  I angst over that very thing as my 78 had a plastic bucket and though salvageable it would be staring back at me for years.  Given the sticker shock I get ever time I purchase something because I relate price's in the 70's to the part prices today we should have gotten a few guys together and formed a quasi business to be able to get wholesale prices on what we needed.  A rudimentary website, some letterheads and bingo- "CB750 REINCARNATIONS" With offices in San Diego, CA/ El Dorado Hills, CA/Austin, TX/Lincoln, NE., etc.  Hey might have worked?  I had no idea I would have spent enough money to have made it worthwhile.

Its amazing the little things that pop up to be modified, repaired or replace on these builds.

Did I read correctly that you tried AN fittings on you oil lines but they leaked?  I was hoping to go that way but if there is an issue with them I need to find an alternative.

Greg,

Yet another example of why this forum is so great in sharing its collective wisdom and ideas.  I think that metal bucket will be able to handle the added stress of the LED bulb.

Yes, my prior oil lines did have AN fittings, but they leaked where the fittings met the hoses.  I'm not sure whether to attribute that to the person who mated the fittings with the hoses or the design itself.  Yet, once I swapped to conventional reproduction hoses, I had not leaky hoses!

Yeah man, I really like the graphite color on the cases. Subtle but different.

Waiting on a part like a metal headlight bucket sucks. Should come tomorrow. If so, I can still ride Sunday!

I got one from Carpy over a year ago. Should have mentioned that to you since he's on your coast, not mine.... :-\

Holding out on him Cal?

Should ditch the 4 wheeled bummer and get a 2 wheeled version! That's my "other" running project! Trying to spread time between my 550 (finishing up last bits), my underway 500 rust patient (GSXR-mad street bike) and the R90. So, you can see why I missed telling Don about the bucket-

I would love to get out of 4 wheels but I love driving cars! Bikes are fun but I make a lot of mistakes and push things too hard a lot of the times. Bmw bikes look cool but are expensive. Cal, how's the swing arm coming along?

Airheads are pretty cool.  My buddy keeps one in his vacation house in Palm Springs.  I get free use of it when I'm out there.  The wind farms make for cool riding scenery.

Jordan,

Cal said you have some spare 550 brake parts -- 2nd rotor and caliper.  If you have no use for them, let me know.

This is inappropriate but funny -- something I saw at the IMS show a few years back on a vintage sidecar:

Don,

I sure do! I'll trade you for a ride on your 550. I want to make sure I fit on it :)

Close on the swing arms. Doing something for Don too. Plus, a little early wedding gift planned on the side.

My rear shocks came last night, gotta get the old ones off and out to you as well. Did you sort out your rear hub/rim yet?

Don, I hope you have a grease gun for that caliper. Also, give Godferrey a call for a new piston!

Awesome!  I can't wait to see the swingarm.  Godfrey makes those cool phenolic pistons.  I have them on my GL brakes on the 750.
