Ok good to know. As soon as I am done with this project of mine, I will see if I can get the rust out of it. The tank is painted as it was the tank I used on it last summer its the one on my avatar, however the paint is going to go as I will paint it another color. Also there is rust in side the tank I have not noticed if its really bad thought the tank or just in that one spot. Its metal obviously.

I will let you know when I get it worked out..

Thanks!

Nice work man even with a few hiccups you seem to still be coming along ok.

There will always be bumps in the road.  Seriously it could have been a lot worse.

Oh and BTW Rina will ride half a mile (with throttle) before coughing and choking because I forgot to turn the gas on  :-[   Unless you plan on riding with a damn near empty tank down a really really long hill, I would not worry about the petcock placement back there.

wow really? mine makes it... mmm maybe a quarter mile.  There is no cough, choke.  She just goes "Gak!" and dies.
Then the gas goes on, the starter button is hit and away we go!

Delilah seems to get 45ish mpg... but because my stupid trip odometer is broken and I do a lot of PITA stop and go on all my trips, it's sort of hard to tell. mpg is definitely, definitely better on the highway, though.

Made me think of Calvin and Hobbs  :D

Yeah, I can't really complain too terribly much, I was just bummed about buggering the paint, but more so cause I wanted to start riding!

After work I'm hoping to pressure test the tank (my lungs, a rubber tube, some duct tape, and soap water) and then sand the JB Weld a bit and then rubber coat the bottom of the tank again. To cover the paint that was buggered when relocating the petcock I'm going to bring the rubber undercoating up the side of the tank just a wee bit.

The POR15 kit is due to be delivered Thursday, so I'll reseal the tank then, wait 72-96 hrs and ride!! Between now and then I'll be trying to go over the bike with a fine tooth comb and make sure everything is ready so as soon as the tank is cured put her on and go! At least, that's the plan, still have no idea what little gremlins will appear once I get her in motion  ;)

On a side note, is there a market for repairing these tanks? Do most people just take them to Radiator shops?

Well, keep the shiney side up,

I finally installed the chain that came on friday, that thing is gooey. I accidently broke the clip that holds the side plates on, so I had to go buy another. Quick rant, I find it very annoying when  I call a place asking for something VERY specific and they say they have it, I run down there and... they don't carry that specific brand but hey the one we have will work.... If I wanted THAT brand I would have asked for it but I didn't!!

Rant over. The clip will work. Quick note for anyone installing a clip masterlink, a very small c-clamp is VERY helpful. I thought that the side plates would just slip on easily and space themselves... nope.  Anyhow, so chain is on, I put on the chainguard, installed the side cover, adjusted the rear brake and everything.

Now all I'm waiting on is the tank. Since I moved the petcock bung and had to use JB weld to seal it since I couldn't properly weld/braze it without doing MASSIVE damage to the paint, I'm waiting to reseal the tank. Part of me REALLY REALLY wants to just put gas in the thing as I'm sure the JB weld has sealed it, but I've waited this long to ride another week or so isn't going to kill me but it could make all the difference with the tank staying sealed. I'm not a patient person by nature. So to appease myself I filled up the bottle tank and turned her on. Since I had her all together sans tank I decided to just go up and down the short little driveway and see how the clutch was adjusted and everything. I won't know for sure till I can ride her harder but it all feels good.

I think I've finally tracked down the noise that's been bothering me. I decided to try and tension the cam chain again and once I loosed the nut it quieted down a bit, but as soon as I tighted her again she was noisy again. I'm afraid this means that my adjusted isn't working right, then again it could also indicate that I'm just not loosening it up enough to allow it to do its thing, but I'm too paranoid to loosen it any further for fear of going to far. I think I went like 6 1/8th turns, there's not a lot of room in there. Can I go more maybe?

I decided to stop as one of the cylinders stopped firing, I'm guessing I fouled a plug with all the idling I did.

Anyhow, depending on what you guys think I may go ahead and clean the plugs and try tensioning the camchain again tomorrow.

I dont know Jack about the 650..

if it were a 750 the tensioner bolt is known to bite into the tensioner shaft, leaving a mark.. Slight adjustment is then not possible as tightening tends to draw it back into the mark it made.. clean up the parts and smooth the surfaces..

I searched Kit's thread and read where she had to change out the nut on the tensioner bolt. So from this I'm wondering, can the nut on the tensioner bolt be removed completely without the bolt going into the engine? The reason I ask this is if that is the case then it would ease my fears of accidently loosening it too much. Also, I don't know if it makes a difference but the nut on my tensioner shaft is an acorn nut. At first I was wondering if this was something a PO did, but on the spare 650 engine that I have it also has an acorn nut.

I'm assuming that would involve removing the top end correct? I'm really hoping it doesn't come to that. I'm hoping I'm just being too timid with loosening it.

So if I remove the locking nut on the camchain tensioner will it pop into the engine and then I'll have all sorts of horror issues?

Ok, so I've resprayed the tanks bottom with the rubber undercoating. I'll post pics later tonight with the tank and side covers on the bike. I'm just waiting for the sealer, so hopefully I'll be riding next week by this time if not sooner.

I decided to get the bike out and fiddle with her a bit. I pulled the plugs, a little black but not as bad as I was expecting. I put them all back in, started her up, warmed her up enough that she'd idle on her own and fiddled with the camchain adjuster. I'm pretty sure the noise I'm hearing is the camchain, but in all honesty I don't know if it's excessive or just normal for these bikes. I've backed the adjuster nut off as far as I dare but there isn't any difference in the noise. I'm going to PM Soos and see if he'll come by and give me his opinion. I'm really hoping I'm just being paranoid. I have no idea the number of miles this girl has on her, the clock says approx 40k but the guy I bought her from said he'd replaced the odometer at some point. How long do cam chains usually last? The adjuster nut has always been pretty easy to loosen and tighten up so thats a good sign that it's likely been used in the past. I'm also trying to track down some miniscule oil leaks around the top, but at this point I'm really not too concerned about those, hell the 500 pee'd oil a ton worse than this does so far.

Hehe, I couldn't help but pull her up and then back down the driveway again. My neighbors likely think I'm nuts.... well the ones who don't already know it  ;)

I don't think you can do any damage by winding the adjuster nut right off Brandon.
When you loosen it that just allows the slipper to slide up a bit more to tighten the camchain.
I've never taken mine right off but I can't see the japs building some sort of jack-in-a-box booby trap where if you remove the nut it all springs inside and involves a total tear-down of the engine. ;D
Anyhow a few turns out is all it takes to give the slipper enough room to work, when I loosen mine the motor usually gets noisier then as I tighten the nut the noise lessens.
If you don't hear a change in tone, give the whole thing (nut & threaded bit) a bit of a shake as maybe the adjuster is jammed up.
I must admit that a new camchain and tensioner unit are on my shopping list for this winters teardown and polish up as I'm pretty sure I've run out of tensioner adjustment.

yeah. Def. the mirrors. :)

If you need to do as Hush said and give the cam chain adjuster a little rough love, I suggest you leave the acorn nut threaded on just a few threads anyway, just in case.  I don't *think* you could accidentally push the stud into the head causing a major pain in your ass, but because it's a 650, with all the bells whistles and hard-to-love traps, that extra few threads of safety blanket can't hurt.  and when you tighten the acorn nut back down, the noise will decrease and bear in mind, you don't need to torque the everlovin' heck out of it, just get it decently seated. much more and you might booger the threads, and none of us want that.

If it is like the DOHC adjuster then no it will not fall all the way into the jugs.

However I wouldn't chance it.  Better to leave it on a short leash.
