CB750 Head and bore (machine work) & 836 options

I called around to all of the local machine shops today and out of 5 shops, only 1 would entertain the idea of porting my head. And I didn't get a good vibe from that guy, but he quoted me 400 for the head and 80 per cylinder to bore +4 for an 836 kit. So around 800 bones for the machine work. That seems a little steep to me.

Local resources for getting my 836 put together are seemingly non existent, so I may have to look at either buying a complete engine from someone, and ship it home (Wayne & Sons still doing them in MN?) Or find a remote mechanic willing to do it and send all the pieces to them to build it, then ship it back. In either case, the $$ to ship to/from the lower 48 is looking like around $300-500 on top of the build costs.

I have ~ $2500 budget, and just the parts (JE 10.5:1 kit, Falcon Rods, 41a CAM, KPMI valves/springs/retainers, HD CAM chain, Dyna S w/DC-1 coils)  come to about $1300. Add to that the 800 for the machine work = $2100.

I have considered doing the work myself, but for my 836, I would just rather it get done than have it sit in my garage for 3 years while I bang my head on it. Have you guys got any ideas or know someone that knows how and is willing to do the build right?

I'll give it a day er two and see if he happens across this post. Sometimes guys are bugged by blind PMs from random dudes asking for things, especially when they're busy. I hate to give up the chance for a best case scenario.  ;D

You won't find a better guy or head man than Mike. You don't need an invite from him just get in line. He's one of us and he's there for us. Think he's finishing up my 2nd head now.  ;)

I'd assume you have a line on those parts and that they are used to get them for $1300. I'd say you are getting off real cheap for what you have listed. Like you I have virtually no local help so I ship mine out to guys that do old Honda. Mike has my head and Big Jay has the first set of jugs and the 900 kit. If you're spending this kind of cash be sure you have the right guys to do it. It ain't cheap nor is it fast to get done. After jacking around with my local machine shop for over a year I knew it was time to go elsewhere. Kinda fun to watch him dyno those 900hp monster motors though.   
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Have you already spent the money on the parts, or are you pricing stuff right now? I would look at Cycle Xchange's website http://www.cyclexchange.net/Engine%20Parts%20Page.htm Seems like you could get more for your money. I'm pretty sure Big Jay has a 1000 kit also, but I don't see it on his website.

$1300 for all that would be a steal. Real steal! I'm doing 2 top of the line engines. 900 and 1000. I know. One will cost me approximately $5000 but, yes, I am nuts  ;D  If you'd like the list when I'm done I'll post it.

And that's $599 without the liners or $899 for the kit for initial purchasers PLUS cylinder work at $300. I know this for a fact. Then price out a new set of Falicon rods, full set of Kibblewhite head hardware. You've already doubled his $1300 and that doesn't complete his list.

My suggestion is the 836 kit, cam, valve springs, and porting. Use stock valves unless you're going bigger. This will get you one nice engine. If you want to spend more money, definitely on an ignition and coils then CR29s. Stock rods will hold this stuff. Go bigger, get some deep pockets.

Geez Jerry....I'm feeling the pressure. ;) Your intake seats have been bored for the 34mm valves and I've started the porting. I'll be out of my school job next week and it's is full steam ahead. Your head will defintely be a big performer. I'm still trying to get my FJ 1314 engine together and that has been out of the bike for about 1.5 years now.....to much time spent on other people's stuff. ;) ;) ;) ;)

Somehow I knew you'd be showing up at this thread  ;) Wish I could plan a road trip and pick it up. Then you, Andy and I could do some beer! It's gonna happen one day. Take some time for yourself. The FJ needs you.  ;D I just have some loose ends to put together. Waiting on the 900 cylinders too but no pressure implied. Expecting my full bike stainless fastner set too. Just like an anxious kid at Christmas waiting for his toys.

Hey Mike,

Ron and Jerry PMd with some alternative options to try and keep me within my budget. A reality check mostly  ;)  But no PM from you that I see.

I'm running Mikuni 29mm smoothbore carbs and a Kerker 4 into 1 megaphone. My bike had an RC 1000cc goldenrod motor in it (the Cobra). That motor blew up under me on the freeway in 99 after 12 years of service. I pryed a stock 76 750k out of a ball of grease and oil at my local boneyard, and have been running it since. It smokes pretty good, and feels like a 550 on the road - So it's time to do something about it. At first I just was going to throw a hone and rings in, and call her good. But my Kerker was so dinged up and rusty, that I just had to get a new one. Now that she has new pipes, the hone/ring idea doesn't seem like enough. I want my Cobra back!  ;D

The biggest pain about the Cobra was that it had a magneto. So no electric start, no headlight unless you had better than 4500 RPMs, etc. And I live in Utah, where it's COLD. Kicking the Cobra for 15 minutes till it finally starts in 15 degrees, is/was too much. So an 836 with a crystal head that allows all the electrical to work, and still have a hot street bike - Seems like the way I want to go.

In any case, I'm keen to get my head packed up and on the way out to you. What's my next move?

I haven't been into the motor since it blew, but when I got off the bike and looked, there was a hole in the case out the front. So I likely blew one of the goldenrods. The Cobra is at my dad's last I checked, but we haven't spoken in awhile (long story) so I don't know if I'll ever see it again, or if he even still has it.

 What carbs did you have on the Cobra?, and how did it perforn against other bikes on the street?

 twelve years, sure does not sound bad..

 Do you think with an acellerator pump, it would start easier ?

If you ever fix it, first thing to do is get rid of the mag and put a Dyna 2000 on it.

For starters, I'd steer clear of Wayne & Sons.  They did an engine for one of the dude's on the HondaChopper board.  Full rebuild, like $2700.  The engine blew up a few weeks later.  Opened it up and it was full of crap.  RTV that had plugged oil passages, metal chavings leftover from machine work, etc.  Very sloppy job, used parts that were supposed to have been replaced, etc.  He never did manage to get his money back.  They changed names, moved, etc.  I know some people had good luck with W&S in the past, but that deal soured their name for me.

Mike's headwork is top-notch (I just received my head back from him as well).

The 29mm Mikuni carbs are what it ran with. It performed really well. When the clutch was new keeping the front wheel on the pavement was challenging. I never raced it to compare, it was too frightening and I was too young. Erm... accelerator pump?

Some carbs have accellerator pumps, like Webers, 77/78 750 carbs, some added them on to regular carbs (there was a kit)..

 Just wondering, cuz I was thinking, gas, compression, spark even at advanced position..should + firing up..

 You must have had the only Cobra, that wasnever raced.. :o
