Author Topic: CB750 CAST ALUMINUM SIDE COVERS (Read 8743 times)

I'm looking into having the cb750 side covers made out of cast aluminum. I'd like to know what you guy's would
like better, having recesses so you could install the emblems on them or to have them flat with no emblems.
I was thinking just flat so you could just drill your own holes if you want emblems or leave it without emblems.
It would be easier that way for me cost wise and you all would be happy. Hopefully the the price will be far below
whats offered out there right now.

I'd love a set for my K1, but I don't think I'd buy them if they don't have the emblem recess.

Agreed, but side covers without recesses just don't look right when you put the emblems on, IMO.

I wouldn't rely on this thread as the sole source of determining interest in these side covers. If they're of good quality and if the price is right, you'll have a hard time keeping up with the demand.

Yea i hope after i contact the foundry this week the startup cost won't be to high. If not it'll be a go for sure.
The one's from japan are cool looking with the fins and all but $400.00 is really to high, and thats without shipping!!
Maybe they will let me do a test run of a small amount before i place a big order. we'll see.

Plain smooth covers for my K3 would be nice, I can't commit until a price is discussed though. There are a ton of K3's out there, maybe this would be a good model to begin with?

How about this, smooth with enough thickness to mill the emblem cavity at extra cost.

BTW 73 and later did not use the cavity for the main emblem, emblem fits over it, but we pulled the billboard emblems off & stuck the much cooler looking 71 & 72 ones in there.. The gold wing emblem is sunken , using part of the cavity..

Even though I don't currently have a 750 I voted for the dents because the buyer will have to paint them and they could fill the dents if they don't want them.
If this project is successful, I would suggest providing them with and without dents at some point and also start providing other side covers for other models.

Ithink most are going to try to polish them, or a brushed finish..

If I understand correctly, you're planning on side covers done with fins, ala Yamiya? If so, that's an excellent project. The biggest problem I've found in having casting work done is the cost of the pattern. Pattern makers are just plain expensive, and patterns have to be made to allow for the shrinkage factor.

You also might want to look carefully at the attachment point fittings. Getting them right is the most difficult part of this project, and they have to be properly made to account for the additional weight of the aluminum covers. Even the plastic side covers are too often lost.

Good luck with this. I'll vote with my wallet; tentatively put me in line for a set.

The biggest problem with casting, is getting em clean enough to run polished..

Oh, I was thinking people with stock bikes would want to paint them stock colors to complete their restore projects.
I know they wouldn't be original but it seems to me if I were restoring a bike I'd take aluminum over plastic just so they'd last.

I didn't know somebody was already producing metal replacements.

They will be finnless. I know some will want to have the recess and others will not. Thats the problem. The cost
will be too much for me to do both. I'm leaning toward without the recess. Then if you want emblems you can mount them anyway you want. The tooling will cost between $500.00 to $7,500.00 depending on the size of the casting and is good for 5,000 parts. I know i wont need that many. Then there's the cost factor for a production run of the parts.
The more you order the cheaper the total cost. Hopefully i can keep the cost factor down enough to make a small
profit and keep the demand high. Hopefully i can order a small amount without investing a #$%* load of cash to see how
the demand factor kicks in. Then comes the advertisment and the goverment with their hands open for a freebe !!

Most? How do you know that?

Any side covers on my K1, especially ones that I'll be spending a decent amount of money on, are going to be painted to match the tank as closely as possible. Polished aluminum side covers would look sweet on many customized bikes, but would look out of place on an otherwise stock-looking bike, IMO.

They do look bad ass ! An old friend of mine has a set on his supercharged cb750. Some company made them
back in the 70's. I've been trying to buy his bike for 20 years! I think i'm wearing him down.
