doh! looks like you were right, TG... it only does it in third (my most used gear of course). guess the trannie is getting pulled this winter for undercutting. it's getting worse.  :'(

oh- and regarding the race bike and rules: apparently i will be able to run it in vintage open, so long as i change the clutch actuation and covers to look like a 500. kinda silly, considering the 550 clutch actuation is essentially the same as the 750, which can run up to '78 since the engine looks the same. silly rules.

hope  you get lucky with the shift fork, not easy to find them new (wonder why....)

my tuner friend simply rewelds the guiding area and then grinds them down for a good fit in the gear groove

The forks were a bit spendy, but last fall they had NOS available, but I would give them a call just to check.

TG- so you think the problem then, is that the shift fork gets worn a little thin and doesn't quite hold the gear it's position? i'm trying to picture what's happening in my head... it seems strange that it only slightly slips and then goes back in so smoothly. welding it up sounds like an easy solution, provided that i can find specs for how thick it is supposed to be.

ryan- thanks for the WHH tip. i got several hard to find trans gears from them. not cheap.

i want to wait until the winter to pull mine, but it sucks to not have a reliable third gear. it only does it when under heavy load, but that eliminates the fun riding. i don't need to ride that bike if i'm just putting around town... it wants the twisties! i think i'll just ship a separate gearset off to be undercut, and give the meshing teeth the same polishing treatment as the last ones before they go out. i still don't know if that helped, but it makes sense and was really easy to do.

If I remember right 3rd gear was the one I had problems with also,it had enough play with new parts to want to shim,but too small to shim.It's a combination like TG said,but fork usually the culprit!Good Luck,Bill

thanks... rode the same route today that wants 3rd gear most of the time, and i came up with a solution: go fast enough that 4th is in the sweet spot.  ;D

CR carbs would be nice for sure... i'm just running CB750 carbs until i find an affordable set. i'm currently running a MAC header, only because i couldn't find anything else for the 650. eventually i'll make my own set and hopefully unchoke the exhaust.

finally have some time to get back to my baby, so i've done a few things... i need to send the trans off to get undercut, but i've been asked to put the bike in a "motorcycle art show" with other local builders, so it's crunch time to finish everything else and make it look good.

i made a better fairing frame for the SS fairing:



i'm experimenting with paint ideas, and this one is my favorite so far:



in black, and a little different...


in the cockpit:


i think i'm going to go with a nice red, like in the first photos, with a white pinstripe and the rest polished to 600 grit and clearcoated. opinions?

Red with gold outline might be cool, could transpose on seat as well. Question-you ever tried pistons from KZ650 in the CB650 block. They're 62mm, 2 valve, 15mm wristpin and have a nice dome.

I really like the red, but I'm wondering if the swath isn't too high.  The arc on top seems just a tad to high for the curve on the tank.  Drop that a bit and I think it would be very sweet.  Any red detail on the tail?

that's a Ducati fairing right? Have a look at some side shots of 70's Ducs and I you'll see that it should be pointing a bit more upwards. I think its tilted down too much at the front right now.

lots to respond to, but TG got the front of the line with that one...  ;) yes, i know the 900SS sits differently, but i think it follows the lines of the tank better this way... i like the bottom line of the fairing to be in line with the bottom of the tank. i can still tweak it a little though, as the frame pivots at the front mount.

i haven't opened the cases yet.. this art show request thing got me in gear to work on the rest though. i was going to send out a spare trans for undercutting so i won't have to wait with open cases forever, but a member here just informed me he might sell me one already machined if his project works out.

carrie's the only one who likes the red, huh? i think it make sit stand out in a way that it doesn't otherwise. the black just blends into everything else and seems kinda pointless to me. i later put a pinstripe around the paint, which i thought really improved it. it's now sanded down to 1000 grit and awaiting real paint and clearcoat, but you guys are making me second-guess...

hmm, i guess i'll sit on it for another day.

I think the red looks pretty sharp.  I think a little colour on the tail would go a long way complementing the colour on the tank.
