Has anyone used the aftermarket shocks?
« on: September 10, 2009, 03:52:24 PM »
Hey Guys I am new to this fourm and have just brought my first road bike after being in the Vintage motorcross restorations for a few years, thought it is time to do a raod bike so I picked out a CB550 as I have always loved the way they look. So classic.....

Has anyone here used the aftermarket shocks that are a take off of the orginals on here?? As I am need of a set. I noticed there is a pair on there rating 414lb is this to hard or a good rating for a cb550 which will carry the occasional passanger?? Also what is the quailty like??

Cheers
Tom

I got a set of the partsnmore.com shocks for $75 for my cb550.  Some people complain about them being porr quality and too stiff and although I havent logged any miles yet (still building) they look great and seem plenty squishy.  Im happy as a clam.

the Forza/MDI shorty shocks look good , but don't work all that well ... worth the 70 i paid for them (for the look) , but if you want performance go elsewhere

i got a set of boge shock off a guy on ebay several years ago, i got REALLY heavy springs on mine as i'm a big guy, they work good and have decent enough damping for someone with my riding abilities. i think that a few others here might have gotten these shocks too. i know i paid less than 100 for mine.

Progressive suspension offer good shocks and fork springs and they're pretty reasonable.

The partsnmore (MDI/Forza) shocks I have are 13 3/16" I believe.  Longer than my stock cb550 shocks but perfect for what I needed.  Had a hoop welded to the back under my cafe seat which cuts down on suspension travel.  Also wanted more rake for a better stance.

progressive suspension has nice stuff a touch over your budget ($110-125)

The shortys do look cool, but compromise handling(increasing the rake/trail).. i rode the shortys for 1.5yrs then switched to the stockers....it was like buying a sportbike.

I bought progressive shocks with the heavy duty springs because I ride with the girl on the back a lot.  I like the shocks.  The ride is rough when it's just me.  I probably would have been fine with the normal springs.  It's an expensive mod, but I think the quality is real good and the bike handles nicely with them.

progressive suspension is great but way over $125.  The shocks are $150-200 for a pair and springs are $70-90 for a pair.

Any complaints/compliments over the lowering kit that CycleX is now selling, which includes the lower rear shocks and shorter front tubes with seals for $199?

troll ebay... I got lucky and paid less than $100 for my Progressive Suspension shocks and springs. (I also got straight rate Progressive Suspension fork springs (($200 special order usually)) for less than $80. My ebay-fu is VERY strong ;)

I used to have an EX650R with Hagon shock on it, and I loved it. If he has that quality for CB shocks, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from him again.

Even though this thread is 180 days old or more I must respond for others benefit who may read this.
Increasing the rake or trail DOES NOT COMPROMISE  the handling abilities of a motorcycle.

Some bikes have as little as 24º rake and the V rod has 36º just like the Suzuki 1400 intruder.
More rake gives greater handling at higher speeds.
Short rake is helpful with very tight turns.

Anywhere in that range will work. It just depends where you ride.
One of the most winning motorcycles in the history of motorcycles was the H-D XR750 and it had 29º.

Hate to burst your bubble on this one but changing the geometry of your bike can significantly COMPROMISE  the handling abilities of a motorcycle.
