It can be done -
1) Clean all grease and grime away
2) Use oven cleaner to remove old clear coat
3) Wet sand 240, 400, 600, 1000, 2000 until smooth
4) Use 1,700 RPM buffer with red/brown cutting compound
5) Clean part and remove all compound
6) Use white compound and flannel buff wheel to achieve mirror results - NEVER contaminate your white/flannel buff. Use only after cleaning all of the brown off the parts.
Buffing time is less than 2 minutes if you get the right tools and get the parts up to working temperature. The block compounds are made with animal fats that are desined to melt at 140 degrees F. You'll need to wear cotton gloves to hold the parts - that way you can feel when the temps are reached. When it's right, the part won't drag and there will not be any black on the part. If the part is black, it means you don't have enough heat. Trust me, I learned the hard way how to buff parts - This set-up is about $350 with the stand, but I paid for it with just 1 bike and it's mine for as many as I want to do. Tools are always a good investment if you enjoy this hobby.
