All carbs serviced and on the bike. Throttle cables to fit, oil to be topped up then I shall run out of excuses. Time to fire it up.

Rode it like I stole it, came home and polished the engine, wheels and a lot of the chrome. 55*F out today, 6" of snow forecast next week. I also put the lowers on the windjammer in case it's cold next time out.

I rode my bike the first time with saddlebags. Felt different, but that was to be expected.

...and don't forget to drill some small drain holes in the bottom for when you fill them with ice.  Then you can throw in a couple left over steaks too.   ...and your friends (and others) will always be able to find you by following the drip trail.

Picked the chain cover off the winter beater (PC26) just to have a look at a small water hose running behind it.

Oooohkay.  :-X
Now imagine the chain length is well within spec and it rides just fine...

And no, I don't wash that bike. It sees a muddy road every day too. It's the definition of beater.

Fitted throttle cables. Just the central pair of plenum chamber rubbers to seat fully onto the inlets and top the oil up. Plan to fire it up this evening.

Just received the good 1973 XLH1000 crank and flywheel assembly so I can rebuild my black Sporty that I bought from my hospital bed last year. The assembly (with S&S rods) looks perfect, but just watched youtube vids of guys having to use a hydraulic press to remove the crank from the left side crankcase.

I don't own a hydraulic press, but I've always wanted one. Oh wait, there's around a zillion on Ebay. I do now............. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Swapped advancers from the TEC 333 that was on it (this ain't right for a CB750 - no idea what the PO was thinking) with a 300 I acquired.  Static timed using a probe light.

Reinstalled 3 spark plugs.

Learned my new 18mm socket CANNOT be removed after you've tightened down the plug on #2.  Ground down the socket.  Put plug in.  Took plug out.  Ground the socket some more.  Put plug in.  Took plug out.  REALLY GROUND DOWN THE SOCKET.

Reinstalled 1 spark plug.

Remounted 1 carb I had pulled to measure the rubber boot holding it to the manifolds (this has dual VM34s on CycleX manifolds).

Attempted to start.  Got a little cough, and then the battery died.

Observed I forgot to replace the leads on the battery maintainer sometime last week, and my periodic attempts to check timing and various electricals over the last week have drained the battery too low to get it started.

Dug out the 10A battery charger and put it on.

Fiddled with some stuff while it charged.

Attempted to start... cranking, no starting.  Waited a bit longer to gather more battery charge.  Attempted to start... cranking, no starting.

Observed I had the kill switch flipped.

Fiddle with some stuff while it charged.

Started... with only cylinders 3 and 4 firing.  Well, that can't be coils.  OK... bright idea - maybe I have a carb problem (1 carb feeds #1 and #2, the other carb feeds #3 and #4).  Quick test?  Swap the carbs.

Rerouted fuel lines and cables to swap carbs.

Started on all 4 cylinders! (huh?)

Best I can figure I had a stuck float on one carb... bumping them around swapping them must have freed it up.

Too late for the neighbors to mess with completing dynamic timing tonight...

Clean up tools.

Yes, it could be related to the coils. ;) The coil that feeds the #4 plug also feeds #1, and the coil for #3 also goes to #2. It doesn't sound to me like it's hitting on all four?

If there were a bad coil, I’d have no spark on either cylinders 1,4 or on cylinders 2,3.

What I had was cylinders 1,2 that were cold and only 3,4 were running.

For there to be a spark problem on 1 & 2 at the same time that was caused by a bad coil, it would mean BOTH coils are bad, and thus how could there be spark to 3 & 4, right?

That was my reasoning.

Sure, I suppose I could have bad caps or wires on 1,2, but that’s not a “coil” problem, per se.

And the video doesn’t do it justice. After I listened to the video I realized it sounds completely different than what it did in person. Exhaust pressure/pulses were nice and even on both sides, all 4 header pipes heated up equally... pretty sure it was on all 4. It was definitely and distinctly different than before when it most definitely was only firing on the right 2.

My first bike was a black '74 XLCH 1000.  Kick-only, and right side shift like your 73.  My uncle has it now - man I miss that bike!

You were a lucky boy mate, my first bike was the Honda C50 my sister loaned me to teach myself to ride on, in 1968 or 69. I love big bikes, so my first "real" bike was a 1975 CB750F0 that I bought new (old stock, nobody wanted them) in 1978. I bought my first Sporty, a 1985 Iron Head XLH1000 in 1987 and loved it, but was almost wiped out by an old bag who did a turn in front of me and put me in thee gutter, so I bought a big V8 musclecar, then another one, and didn't buy another bike until 1989, a Kawasaki Z750L1, which I thought was a character-less sewing machine until I traded it on a 1979 Ducati 900SS, which I discovered was the biggest, over-hyped POS that ever rolled off a factory floor. Great handling, grreat brakes, when it started........

I bought my 1994 XLH1200 5 speed Evo sporty in 2015 with 4000 miles on the Odo, it's still only got 5500 on it now, and it's a magnificent beast, but I've always wanted another iron head, so when I was laying in a hospital bed an hour after coming out of a general anaesthetic and I saw this bike going cheap, I texted the guy a message and sent him a deposit, sight unseen (apart from the poor pics he'd posted on FB) and my son drove me over to his place when I was discharged a couple of days later to seal the deal.

He even followed us over to my place in his truck and dropped it off. I'm looking forwards to replacing the crank and whatever else it needs, and putting some more miles up. I bought a new Sudco Mikuni carb conversion and spent a small fortune on the optional Borrani rimmed wheels (18 inch rear) for it, plus shipping from the US of A, so it'll be back on the road and running as good as it looks very soon. ;D

Rode my bike around. I did run into an issue of my bike cutting out at stop lights. I suspect that it's the battery that's dying everb though I just put the battery in last Fall.

The battery had 12.68v when I checked after making it home.

Nice!  I'm gonna have to scrounge around to find some old pics of the '74.

My grandfather had a brown '76 XLH that I'd ride from time to time... it always threw me off switching between right and left shift.  To this day (and it's been 20 years since I rode the '74) I still catch myself having to think to switch feet.  Doesn't do much good trying to toe-up the brake.
