Not much today, I let the center stand go extra long in the bath since I had to work a close/open shift combo. I wire wheeled it after work today and started the drivers' pegs, brake-light-switch-bracket, the tailight mount and a little bracket I don't remember where it lived at the moment :P

Tomorrow off so weather permitting I'll get through the rest, or close to it, of the painted steel. Excepting the oil and gas tanks and frame. Not sure if I'll strip/derust those with the electrolysis or the chemical route... I've also gotta see how the inside of the tanks look again, if they're OK I might not fix what isn't broken.

Dropped off parts at the nickel platers.

Picked up parts from the powder coaters.

Ah yes - the circle of life.

Got the rear brakes working properly on my GS1000. Sitting for 25 years is pretty hard on some of that stuff.

Touched up some rust spots on the frame. Fixed my mis-aligned speedo gear from the PO. Pulled the front fender struts for a cleaner look...we'll see how it holds up (fender is dented anyhow). Cleaned up more brake fluid leaking from the lines (and on my tank!  >:(). Stainless lines and new MC are next on the list.

Pulled the parts from the bath and wire wheeled. I was going to try doing the oil tank in the electrolysis, but halfway to the bucket I noticed the fittings were brass soldered. Not sure I should subject the brass to the process.
I might let the powder coaters blast that clean. I'm going to have to ask them to go over the nooks and crannies on a few parts anyway. Hopefully it won't be too expensive with me doing the bulk of the cleaning.

Anyway, I tossed the exhaust header in the bath next, the silencer needed a big helping of air chisel to come off. The header looks in OK shape, so if I can get it clean enough I'll probably have it chromed with a few other parts and just buy a new silencer that looks more stock.

Electrolytic cleaning or stripping of brazed joints won't hurt anything (as long as it's not left in the stripping bath too long.  But that would eat away the other metal anyway).  We used to do it all the time when cleaning parts prior to plating.  Also used electro-stripping on silver soldered joints for dental appliances.  However..if there is silver in the alloy..it will discolor the braze/solder metal..and has to be cleaned with either wire wheel or shell blasting...to get the discoloration off. If it's in an inconspicuous place tho..doesn't make much difference.

Oh good to know! I won't worry about putting it in for a few hours before I hit it with the wire wheel then. Thanks : )

Rode my 77 550K into work all week - clear blue skies every morning; rain and thunderstorms every evening by the time I left.

Couldn't ride today because it was "drop off the grandson day" -- so of course, beautiful skies all day long.

Also got two tires changed on my other 77 550K rehab project - new strips, tubes, etc. - had a buddy help me get a frozen axle nut off of the front wheel - good enough progress for a work night, I'd say. Hoping to get to the forks, brakes and headlamp this weekend at least - and if things go well, maybe even the bearings.

Changed cam from CX-7 to a more moderate Action Fours SS-1. I look forward to smooth driving with better response from low rpm.

Almost, frame goes off to the frame specialist to check for straightness and to brace it, swingarm mods then as well, then I can start putting it back together..... Still have to get the engine built, have all the parts for that, just didn't want the engine sitting round for an unknown period of time before it went in a frame... Getting close mate... ;)

Took my wheels down to a local shop to have my new Metzler Lasertec tires installed and balanced.  Did some work while the wheels were off.  New front brake pads.  My old ones were only 6 months old and had installed them when I rebuilt the font brake (new calipers, piston, seals, SS lines, MC, etc).  For some reason, those off brand pads would squeal every now and then no matter what i did.  New Honda pads don't make a peep.  Also replaced the front sprocket.  Then got my wheels back and installed 'em.

The difference is AMAZING!!!  So much more responsive then my old tires.  Love em.  Went for my first longer ride since I finished my top end rebuild last weekend.  Bike feels brand spankin new  8)
