How do i paint over chrome?
« on: November 16, 2009, 04:15:32 AM »
Paint over chrome & what kind of prep is needed? I'm not interested in keeping the rusty, front & rear fender shiny on my 550. Kinda going for the 'military bike' look. Are there any after market options?

I painted my front and rear fender on my bike the same color as tank. First I beadblasted the fenders and then used a sandable primer for prep before painting.

-bead blast or do something to rough up the surface.
-self etching primer
-sandable primer
-final coat.

I did see on one of the auto shows where they went from scuffing the chrome surface to adhesion promoter then paint.  The adhesion promoter you would normally use on plastic.

I sanded my exhaust with 280 wet skipped the primer becuse being the exhaust I was using high heat paint and didn't think regular primer would hold up, it looks good so far.

Does powdercoating not require scuffing of the surface?  It'll stick to the slippery chromium OK?

I just sand, then use self etching primer.
No.

Use a Scotchbrite pad to scuff it first.

I read somewhere, oven cleaner strips the chrome straight off, there are other things that will do it as well. I am sure there is a thread on here some where that tells of a few different ways to get the chrome off.

The rougher the surface profile the better adhesion. But powder coat will work over untouched chrome. I've done both.

Actually the surface doesn't have to be rough, i have powder coated lots of clean fresh steel, mainly plain steel sheeting for large power boards in high rise buildings and steel tubing for office furniture and it is all smooth as silk. Not too sure about chrome as i have never coated over chrome but if the chrome is stripped off you just powder coat over the bare steel, no problems at all.

I plan on going the easy cheap route with my bike (till the tranny is fixed)...sand the chrome exhaust, prime with high temp engine primer, paint with high temp aluminum paint.

The other option is to take your parts to a chrome shop and have them strip the chrome off. This is done by submerging the chrome part in an chemical bath and it doesn't cost much, especially if you have several parts. Works well on rims, fenders and the smaller parts that have hard to reach areas. Don't expect a shop to strip exhaust pipes as the carbon contaminates the stripping solution.

What does Powder Coating entail? I have ZERO experience with that.

I have never used a "do it yourself setup" only a industrial setup but basically the powder coating gun is hooked up to a hopper filled with coloured powder like black for instance, the powder coating gun has a charge going through it so what ever you hang your parts on to coat must have an opposing charge going through it so that the positively charged powder sticks to every part of the frame{it is attracted to the frame because of the charge}. It is then hung in a baking oven at about 200 degrees for {can't remember the exact time} as long as it takes for the powder to melt into a very hard wearing finish.

I painted my fenders.  There seems to be a lot of unwarranted concern about painting over chrome.

I just used the Duplicolor paint in the Meijer's auto section.  Etching primer, color coat, and clear coat.  I sanded the chrome, just trying to scratch it up a bit for adhesion.  Painted the etching primer and sanded it when dry.  Then the color coat and clear after that, sanding in between.

The best part...
if it don't stick (so far, so good though), it's cheap enough that I'll just repaint it again.

Or you could use Bulldog. Klean Strip makes it...

http://www.repaintsupply.com/pd-bulldog_adhesion_promoter.cfm

Aerosol cans work great in this case but are expensive.

Works well on chrome as well, you have to prep it properly though for sure. Typically scuff sand and clean, or best if you can at least media blast to rough up the surface. You don't need to sand blast just regular bead blasting is fine.

I have a bench grinder with a wire wheel on it. I just go to town with that thing. It seems to do the trick for roughing up the surface and paint sticks gooooood.

The Duplicolor website says to rough up the chrome surface then use the adhesion promoter, then paint with their Wheel Cover Paint.

No primer.
