The best part is that you had a really unobstructed view.

.. and perhaps a certain vulnerability to small arms fire.  ;D
It was not hard, I think you could knock them down will a .22. It would not be hard to hit since it went like 60 mph. Can you imagine the poor wounded fella that had to ride in that little basket.

I learned to fly rotary wing in one of these Bell H-13s. The best I can say is that it flew. The controls were vague and the whole thing shook like hell. The guy who owned it was a friend of my Uncle, and he taught me to fly it. They saved some lives and paved the way for today's ships. The best part is that you had a really unobstructed view.

I don't know if I would be to excited about going up in that.  It looks like such a rickety contraption. ;)
It was a contraption but more reliable than you would think. Sam did nothing but have me hover the thing for weeks. If you could hover that thing, you could hover anything.

At the tender age of 9, I was treated to a ride in a helicopter that I remember looked like this.  It reminded me of the one that Broderick Crawford used in the TV show "Highway Patrol".

There was a show I watched as a kid called Whirlybirds in 1958. I found this still from the show. Notice the bend in the rotors just lifting one extra person. The stars were Kenneth Tobey and Craig Hill. The ship in this show was a Bell 47.

I used to love to watch whirlybirds. Of course a youngster like me must have seen it in re-runs. Sky King too. MMMmm,  Penny.

Two tired if you ever get to Ottawa go to the National arero space museum they have a cutaway engine and you can see how it works, I talked once upon a time a RCN fitter same equivalent as me and I said I would have liked to work on a Centarius he said, your bloody crazy, I hated them, they used to blow up for any reason, he said, he was so happy when they converted to Banshee's, interesting engine but maybe not.

My grandfather rode shotgun (navigator) in these two in Korea.

F-94C Starfire -note the doors around the nose cone for the rockets. If I remember correctly, he told me once the worst damage he ever took was when they shot their own nose off.

Heres a photo I took last summer at my local airport. Heard it flying earlier that day, sounds awesome! No one was around to talk to and get some close up photos, so this is the best I could get from behind the fence.
