The level of detail is amazing.  He says he put 6000 hours into one of the models.  That's three years full time.

How about Air Wolf. Impossible aircraft, but fun to watch.

I saw the Phantoms in action and they were ultra reliable. My late friend Richard was a Phantom driver and won the DFC. He was a Wild Weasel which meant we went sniffing out Charlies AAA sites. He would lead the Bombers around them. His job was to be lit up by them. On one mission a SAM hit his starboard wingtip and exploded. His canopy was was shattered and bits of it embedded in his face. He lost comms with his back seat and he tells me if the back seat pulls the handle they both go out, if the driver pulls, only he goes and the back seat would be burned. He found he could fly at 200 feet at 200 knts. Planes were scrambled from the Coral Sea which was 50 Miles offshore and surrounded him. They tried to get him land on the Carrier since Phantoms had tail hooks, and said they would guide him in. They told him to punch out since his back seat was slumped down and there was a Blue team in the air to get him.

He opted to somehow keep it up for an hour low and slow, he landed somehow. It turned out his back seat was alive but in bad shape. He had a few scars on his face and a deeper scar inside. He was at Disney World on the StarWars ride, when they were hit by enemy fire, the sound and movement was so realistic, he flipped out and they had to stop and take him off.

He went on to become a Lawyer, Professional Engineer, owned a Classic Car restoration company, and was Commissioner of Offtrack Betting for NYC. He was like an older brother to me and the smartest man and most interesting man I ever knew. He died at age 58 of Heart failure.

   Ernest Borgnine? Who's that?  ;) :D

A friend sent me this yesterday. Not sure if it can be considered vintage but it's pretty damn cool. The passenger never shuts up but I suppose I might be babbling on myself the first time I get to 70,000 feet.

Being from Canada,
I throw in my favorite vintage plane: The de Havilland Mosquito

here is a wiki excerpt: The de Havilland Mosquito was a British combat aircraft that excelled in versatility during the Second World War. Originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, the Mosquito adapted to many other roles during the air war where it saw service in the European theatre, the Pacific theatre of Operations and the Mediterranean Theatre, including: low to medium altitude daytime tactical bomber, high altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder, maritime strike and fast photo reconnaissance aircraft carrying out aerial reconnaissance. It was also used as the basis for a single-seat heavy fighter, the de Havilland Hornet. Upon the Air Ministry's decision to enter the Mosquito into production in 1941, it was the fastest operational aircraft in the world.[3]

The aircraft served with the Royal Air Force (RAF) and many other air forces during the Second World War and postwar. The Mosquito was known affectionately as the "Mossie" to its crews[5] and was also known as "The Wooden Wonder" or "The Timber Terror" as the bulk of the aircraft was made of laminated plywood.[6]

About 5,000 of the 7,781 Mosquitos made contained parts made in High Wycombe.[73] In Canada, fuselages were built in the Oshawa, Ontario plant of General Motors of Canada Limited. These were shipped to De Havilland of Canada in Toronto for mating to fuselages and completion. De Havilland Australia started construction in Sydney. These production lines added 1,076 from Canada and 212 from Australia.

Beauty, Performance, and simplicity. Amazing machine which combined to be one of the most versatile planes of the wwII.

Dogfights is on Utube, I have watched for hours. Don't go there if you have things to do.

Very cool thread going on here.

I spent a few summers in this one:

1957 De Havilland Beaver. Like many Beavers, this one was formally a L-20 in the USAF.

Matt,

That is beautiful, I knew a guy who owned a seaplane. Scary as hell to take off and land. It takes a knack in choppy water.
