that is not even close to a stock BMW.. i believe the swingarm is a paralever from some 90's model.

Well initial trial and error is done on the shock mounting location time to weld her up and road test.

What's the clearance between the tire and that lower shock bolt?

the clearance is about a 1/4 in between the bolt and tire it is also a 1/4 in between the shock and tire too. It just looks like it is touching in the pic because the bolt sits in from the larger edge of the tire.

So on to my brace, I am going to mount it to the underside of the swinger. I will have it done tomorrow hopefully pics coming too.

I am afraid I will burned at the stake! Have't you seen the "cutting up classics" thread. Not only am I chopping a vintage bike but it isn't a SOHC  :o

Actually I do have a build thread going on another forum but most of the highlights still find there way here.

looking good so far!!!  i like the idea of putting the key on the rear hump, very different!

now as for your upper shock mount, do you think that's adequate enough for the loads??  also, i hope you have new bushings in the swingarm to minimize the side-to-side movements.  other than that, looks COOL!!!

I don't believe the bushings are a problem on these bikes like they are on the cb's, I have been lurking the cx forum and only find people having issues with electrical bits. The upper mount should more then be strong enough once I weld it all the way around. The tubing I used for the frame work is sch 40 so its almost an 1/8 thick. I will test extensively too. I need to get off my butt and get some more photo's for you all.

no DOM?  wouldn't that be a more suitable material choice??  more crush resistance...

So here are some more pics of the exhaust and of the brace. Some things are just tacked in place so don't panic. I need to remove the rear wheel so I can weld up the swing arm. Then paint it. The exhaust is done other then a few dents I will blend out hopefully, I have a feeling the exhaust is love it or hate it, but it is very light and keeps the look of the bike very compact which was the goal with this one for me. After that it is on to the details left undone. Brake lines back on and new fluid. Shock fluid replaced Wiring to finish blinkers to install all little stuff that I probably won't post then first ride yehaw.

DOM?

Drawn Over Mandrel. It's a method for forming tubing that is stronger than simple ERW (Electric Resistance Welding). Most race organizations require that roll cages be built from DOM tubing because it's better. He's just armchair engineering, don't worry about it.

I think I understand now, but I don't understand why mine isn't I formed those tubes with a mandrel bender. The joints are the same as what would be found on a roll cage... am I missing something?

Cool mod on the exhaust.. I have an idea for my 550 but lack the talent and the tools to do it.. Perhaps I just found some one that can do it!  ;D

Can't wait to see it all done..

Yes. The method of forming the tubing itself has nothing to do with what you've done to the tubing since buying it. DOM refers to the method used to take a flat sheet and turn it into a hollow tube.

Quote
Drawn-over-mandrel tubing is made from cold-drawn electrical-resistance-welded tube that is drawn through a die and over a mandrel to create such characteristics as dependable weld integrity, dimensional accuracy, and an excellent surface finish.
