Looking good!  I am torn on the steering damper issue on this build.  Can you share what type you are installing and how you plan to mount it? 

Also, are those stock GL1000 brake discs or aftermarket?  What kind of fork brace are you going to use? 

PS  The bike looks awesome, as ever.  I was so focused on the front end, I completely missed the graffiti on the lift.  ;D

As for the damper, we'd welded a mount to the frame originally, and I've been running a simple NHK unit that I picked up from MikesXS.

So, it's just a matter of adding a mount to the fork leg to keep the damper.  I liked the look of this SES unit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/37MM-STEERING-DAMPER-FORK-CLAMP-/280722516473?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts_13&hash=item415c5da9f9 and it should be here soon

Hey Dave,

I'm getting old and forgetful. ;)  Last night I was looking from my iPhone and the discs looked different than stock -- looking on my PC they are clearly floating rotors.

I wasn't sure if you were still running the EBC discs or not (as they were spaced to you old 750F front end).  Since you had switched to a GL1000 front,  I assumed that the spacing to the rotors was different, so I wasn't sure if you you went to the GL1000 discs or did something new.  I see from the fitment guide that the MD1074 is a direct swap for the GL1000 rotors.  I imagine they save a few lbs from the stock rotors.

I, too, am in the midst of a GL1000 front swap.  I have 1.125" shorter than stock tubes (from Forking by Frank), the Dime City upper triple clamp and brackets to mount my key switch and gauges, and the stock GL1000 brake calipers (with Goddfrey's phenolic pistons) and drilled GL1000 brake discs.  I originally mounted Tarozzi high-rise clip-ons but they would not hold their position because the pivots are not indexed -- no matter how tight you ratchet them, they still move when you push or pull with a bit of force.  I swapped them out for 37mm Vortex clip-ons.  I also went with a Telefix fork brace.  I am using the Motolanna fork ears, but I have decided to invert them, because I think they will look better slanting upward than downward (as they are pictured below).  I am on the fence as to a steering damper, but I am gathering ideas in case I get any head shake down the road.  I like the idea of lighter, floating rotors, so I might upgrade down the road, as well.

There's a Union Jack on the oil tank, too.   It's a Japanese bike, with Brit cafe style.

Well, I rode it to Backfire Moto last night, and what a difference.  The new brakes have transformed the bike into something much more confidence inspiring.  Before, I was hesitant to really get on the throttle because it would eat road so quickly and in the city you never knew when you'd have to stop.  The brakes weren't bad - they just weren't as good as they should be on a bike this fast.

Now, I grab a handful of brake, and drop out of warp without any drama or uncertainty.  I found myself waiting to brake late just to test the threshold braking and progressivity of the setup.  The rigidity of the forks has to help here as well.  In a little bit of winding road riding in the Magnolia neighborhood last night, the front end felt less noodley.  Again, not that the CB front end was bad, just that there is a noticeable difference here.

The only complaint is that there's a little fork stiction, which should improve as the new seals break in.

Glad to hear your satisfaction with the new front end and brakes. The stock CB750 front can feel a little wobbly in comparison to a modern bike.  I am hoping to feel as happy about my GL swap when I get my bike on the road.
Love your bike and would love to see some more pictures of the newly completed version.

Well it is fall and around here it rains more in spring and fall, but this year has been wetter than normal with over 16 (?) inches above normal precipitation levels

Have to laugh though.  The rear rotor is bigger than the front rotors.  Think I'll ditch the pie-plate and put some smallish, modern thing on there over the winter including an underslung Honda caliper.  Something interesting to research during the rainy months.

The best projects are never done, I guess.

Actually if your after a smaller diameter, I can mount a CB550 front Rotor to the CB750F rear Carrier.

Actually if your after a smaller diameter, I can mount a CB550 front Rotor to the CB750F rear Carrier.

any more info on this?

Just send me your stock one, I'll do the mods removing it from the carrier & replacing your 295.8mm rotor with a Drilled & thinned 276.1mm rotor, then send it back within 48hr's.

They are $88 each with your core, return shipping is $12.50 in the continental US.

That might do the trick ?
Your brake pad contact area for the 276.1mm rotor would be about 90mm to 137mm from center.

What bike does that caliper fit? It looks very similar to my '82 FT500, except the FT has an added boss for the brake stay. The FT rear rotor is the same OD as the 550: 276mm.

It's from a 1981 cb900f.  No idea if it's even remotely likely to fit.

Now, the Ascot caliper is on my list to check as well.
