 Installed the carbs today. This was sort of a "hold your breath" moment because I wasn't sure if the petcock was going to clear the carbs. I KNOW there are some interference issues with the earlier style or CR carbs, and possibly with other tanks with different style petcocks.


 Turns out it clears. Sort of....



 In the "OFF" position, it's fine. In the "ON" position, it's fine. But getting between the two is going to be a minor problem.



 We'll have to trim the tab on the lever just a tiny bit so it will clear the carb top. I also have to figure out a fuel "T" so I can go from two small outlets on the petcock to one larger inlet on the carbs. Shouldn't be a big deal.

 We also worked on fitting the seat. My Dad helped me trim off the hinge mounts...


....and we figured out how we're going to mount the seat. Here's a mock-up. I picked up some hardware today and we'll have to make to small brackets. We should have it all done in a few days and I can have the cowl painted to match the tank/side covers.

 I realized today that the manifolds have an arrow on them. I'm assuming that it points in the direction of flow. Well, as luck would have it, I only had ONE of them in the right direction.  ::)



 Removed them and Dad "match ported the rubber lip inside to make a smoother transition between the carb body and head while we were at it.
 Found out that my throttle cable will work, which is good since I have the lower 400F bars.


 But the real bonus of getting the manifolds correct was finding out the petcock will now clear the carb tops. Yay! No grinding on the petcock lever!

 Did some more work on the seat mount (pics to come), and pulled the swing arm for new bronze bushings.
 I hope to get the bearings in the wheels this weekend, too. It won't be long 'til the rear-end is done and I can start work on a few things up front.

The CV carbs can be fiddly, a couple variants of the CV were used on the CX500/CX650 and GL500/GL650 motors.
Sirius Consolidated in Canada has some parts for the carbs if you have trouble finding sources.
Larry on the CX/GL forum has a pretty good carb guidance as he knows how to work magic with them.  There are some basic guidelines he has published on them before creating the rebuild manual on them.  An industrial ultrasonic cleaner works very well, the HF just doesn't have the power to do it right.

Larry now recommends the Purple formula of the Simple Green that Home Depot carries for cleaning the carbs in the ultrasonic cleaner. Saves a lot of the other stuff with the traditional cleaners and CLR...

 The carbs I have came off a running bike. I gave them a good cleaning using some tips in the above link. Hopefully, I'll be OK. I'll see how well they respond to the K&N filters.
 It's odd that you say they're finicky, as the CB650 guys seem to think the CV carbs are more forgiving. That's been my experience with CV type carbs on XS650's, too; they respond well to intake and exhaust changes.

I would use the HA wheels, i would also just move the tank a little when necessary to turn the petcock on or off, there's enough movement in the tank to do that, and last but not least, i prefer the stock seat.... ;D  Looks cool with the 650 shoe horned in there, i've been trying to convince Dave500 to do the same thing... 8)

I agree.  That thing looked slick as hell with the stock seat but you did a nice job on the custom seat.  For what it's worth, I think the spoke wheels look great.   

Great job on the project!  It is very tastefully done.

When in good shape and tune, they work great. But, they are a pain with the press in emulsion jet for the idle circuit and are not forgiving of bad fuel.

I like to use a few capfuls of SeaFoam Motor Treatment  as a fuel conditioner and it seems to help keep the carbs clean and happy and serves as a fuel stabilizer to a certain extent.

 ....were installed today. Cleaned and greased the swingarm assembly. In this pic, I was waiting to pick up some washers for the top shock mount.

 New EBC shoes in the polished hub. I'm a big fan of EBC brakes. I can really tell a difference when I install new EBC pads or shoes.

 Installed new All Balls sealed bearings in the Lesters and got them all assembled. I plan on dropping off the wheels and tires to be mounted and balanced tomorrow.




 That's a 40T rear sprocket. If my math is correct, that and a stock 17T front will get me very close to the correct gearing for the CB650 engine.
