I'm not saying I don't like HD's far from it actually my point was that everything on them is rediculiously expensive and basically does nothing for performance or handling usually its all show.  Hell my cousins 89 sportster broke a throttle cable and the dealer wanted almost $200 for them...

ok I exagerated it was like $137 not 200...  :o He found it at a local shop for under 40... gee didn't have the HD brand on it and it was 100 cheaper lol.  Same as when he bought a new carb the guy sold him a s&k $400 racing carb for a STOCK 883.  For some reason it ran rich and he fouled plugs every week.  ::)  The next season he went back and they were like "O theres your problem you have a giant racing carb on your stock bike"....  Now I know the mechanic was a idiot and that has nothing to do with HD all I am saying is that seems to be the typical mentality for HD.  Want to go faster?  throw big giant chrome flashy parts at it.  The chrome is smooth and makes it more aerodynamic so it goes quicker right?

I bet the parts guy sold him the carb, not the tech.

Like any carb it needs tuning.. He should have sold him the smaller series or perhaps a Screaming Eagle carb.. if he got the S&S B or C, he should be able to get it to work, hope his pipes are uncorked.

Of course I was not there when it was sold, cant help but wonder what transpired.. What if Salesman says, this one is what the fast guys use, but bottom end will suffer, and the buyer says, I'll take it!

I sold S&S parts and was a dealer for them, I remember when the "D" came out.. huge 2 1/4 bore carb, and a guy had to have one on his stock 80 incher.. in fact he came down or called everyday to see if it was in.. He HAD to have it on his bike for an upcoming event. Long and short of it, it was not the best carb for his use, but we could NOT talk him out of it.. 2 yrs later he was not running it..

Price of parts.. do you know any OEM brand that has cheap parts?? I dont. With HD, at least you have many choices of aftermarket.

Ducati parts.. aftermarket pipes, some 1/2.. yes HALF an wxhaust..1500 bux.. but you can get the full exhaust, for 3 Thousand.... :o   :o.. to me thats walking funny territory.. ;)

Havoc, you may want to look at the price of a drop-in (ie no head mods) 1200cc piston kit.

In the late 80s my CB 750 racing buddy, bought an 883, and we started to hop it up. Before we spent over 600 dollars, we had it running 12.7 in the 1/4, first time out.. :o.. I only wish I could get that bang for the buck out of a CB 750.. :o

Anyway, I can tell you what we did, probably around a G-note in todays prices, and you got to do (some of) the work  yourself..

BTW it had stock uncorked  pipes, stock carb& airbox, when it ran 12.7..

I'd be willing to bet a stock 883 wouldn't beat a 750.  A 75 cb750 stock makes 67hp and a top speed of 118... A 89 stock sportster 883 makes 48hp and a top of 92.  Now granted our bikes are 29lbs heavier than a sportster but with 19 more hp and a higher top end I would think we would be pretty neck and neck. Maybe once I finally get my front end conversion done I'll sucker my cousin out to the track and we'll settle the debate lol.

If it had stock carb, box and pipes just no baffles what hop ups did you do just curious my cuz might want to do it to his he already has some aftermarket pipes I forget the name but they are supposed to be top end for HD's at least back in the early 90's they were lol.  I know they look and sound the part.

Ok here is what we did on a 88 883, the owner had been racing a cb 750 up till that point.

We got a 1200 kit,but in those days there was no drop in. What we bought was,OEM 80 inch pistons (ie 1340 twin) STD size, a head template, head gaskets. That would be 3.50 bore.

When the EVO engines came out in 84 they went from a halfround head, to a bathtub shape, the template was to show the shape that a 1/2 round chamber looked like, you would remove material, to make it look like the older design. I did this gratis for my buddy, to help him out.

Next we bore 1/2 inch out of the barrels, yes 500 thou, and fit the new pistons.

I make up a fixture, to hold the stock mufflers, and cut the inner core out, leaving the outer baffles, not straight pipes, but very throaty.. alot like the OEM Screaming Eagle pipes. I think we left the crossover in place. We look at the aircleaner and we decide to pull out the element.. so stock carb, stock cover, stock pipes, with partial baffle removal.

......................................................................................
Now I recall starting to build pieces around this time to extend the swingarm 4 inches, but I am pretty sure , its not done by its first outing. we did not know what to expect of it. I think at this point, bone stock clutch, gearings, and maybe jetting)

..................................................................................

We get to the track, and he says it runs pretty good, by the end of the afternoon he runs a 12.7
We were were a bit surprised.. I think he spent around 600.00..

Cool I'll let him know.  No offense though but if I did that kind of engine work and dropped a 1100 kit into the 750 and it didn't run 12's I'd be pretty disapointed lol.

If you think you can do it to a stock CB 750, with stock pipes and airbox for a G-note, try it.

I KNOW its possible (or should be) and probably HAS been done, but not by people my size that I know personally..

Personally I find it rather hilarious that people will laugh about how slow some HD's are, but the INSTANT they can beat them, they start carrying the displacement card.. hey is just a pushrod twin... isnt it..

I am speaking form my personal experience, not something out of a magazine or something I heard somewhere.. Later on, with more mods this Sporty could  often carry the front wheel through the first 3 gears, with a stretched frame, and it was ridden on the street a lot.

They offer a 1200 model Sportster.

So they build one thick liner barrel, and bore to either size.. do on an 883 you have at least 5/16 or more sleeve on each side..

Exactly.... the 883 and 1200 engines are exactly the same physical size. Trans and everything.

So all you really have to do is change a few pieces and voila.... 1200cc

They offer a 1200 model Sportster.

Around here it is way cheaper to insure an 883. the price difference between a 1200 7 883 model is far higher than the cost of making a 1200. the 1200 does have different cams, but not that hot.

Besides, if you smoke someone on an 883 it stings harder than when it said 1200 on the side... ;)

TY sir!!

My stepfather has an 08 Ultra Classic that he loves. And while he's damn near 70 I would ride that bike on long trips.

I must say that while I'm used to riding "sportier" bikes... this 883 has really taken me by surprise.

I think it's great that you have been afforded the chance to find out for yourself what MODERN H/D's are like.

Too many guys want to tell you all about them....then find out later they either have never ridden one....or had an AMF H/D with all of their problems.

My 2005 has Fuel injection, breakerless ignition, and is modified.  It will bury the speedo in short order!

Joe, did you ever go to the drags at the Glenncoe strip.?

In 87 I was racing my bEEmer there, and the guy with the Sporty raced his 836 there. We rode them out, he beat a trailered in Kawi 4 there... ;D

On the way home he seized the 836, cooled it off and got home on it (I had gone south to California), then the next weekend he raced it at the Spokane drags, but it was smoking a lot.
In 88 he got the Sporty, and I think 89 started modding it..

 Damn.. where did that 20 years go... :o    :o    :o    :o

Sorry wasn't trying to create a rivalry or anything.  I actually do like Harley's I just find it ridiculous most parts cost so much Vs. the Honda's.  For the money my cuz has spent on his 883 in the last 3 years I was able to buy my 750.  Last time I priced a equivalent Harley Vs. Honda bike the Harley was double the money is all I am saying.  And as far as the performance issue I was just saying they are pretty even.  I think any bike if you drop a grand into the engine it should be in the 12's re guardless of brand.  So if I offended any HD lovers out there I do apologise my main point was that they cost more vs a Honda in most cases sorry for jacking the thread I'll keep my opinion to myself next time.
