finned stator cover
« on: April 04, 2010, 09:04:01 PM »
I have finned covers for points and clutch but not for the stator. thinkin of gettin one to match the others. here's the thing. I can't see how the round 'honda' cover comes off the bigger stator cover? is it just a super tight fit?

the other thing is the fins don't seem to be going in the right direction based on the bolt pattern. can it be fitted at different angles or does it just go on one way?

this may seem like a dumb ? but I don't want to buy anything that won't work. I would just go back to stock covers but I have a slick points cover that say's "sohc" and I kinda like it.

here's the stock setup

now check out this cover

seems like that one would be crooked?

they run the same angle as the ones on the engine. Is that a problem? many people prefer that. are your other ones flat, parallel to the ground? then I could see it wouldn't look right.

Silly boy, tricks are for kids!

Yeah its a real super tight fit.   ;D   ;D   ;D

There is no center cover to remove the stock cover is all one piece. The finned cover simply presses onto the exterior of the stock cover and the three screws are replaced with 3 longer ones.

And yes the fins will tilt down at same angle as the engine fins. Cover sets were made bothways. Few people bot complete sets so we end up mix ups with some that are horizontal and some that are tilted to match the engine.

The stock "cover" doesn't come off; it's part of the stator cover. The finned cover just bolts on top. My bike came with one of those, and it was one of the first things I ditched, since it was only for looks, and added unnecessary weight....

You can't see both sides at the same time, so the left side may be tilted and the rt side may be horizontal.

oooohhhh, I see. that seems kinda hokey, and it will stick out further on the stickenoutest side.

yeah my other ones are parallel with the ground. which bugged me at 1st. but then I got the clutch one that matched. I think I'm just gonna go back to the stock clutch cover keep the stock stator cover and possibly use the trick 'sohc' points cover only. will it look stupid to just have one finned cover?

My bike also had a cast, finned points cover, that I replaced with a stock, thin steel, chrome cover, again, because it was useless weight, and also didn't seal as well. Mine didn't have any trick lettering.
It's really a matter of taste: in my opinion, if it isn't needed, it's not on my bike. :)

Well like I said you can only see one side at a time.  ;)

As far as using them at all, take it from someone who knows, the finned points cover is stronger and if you fall or tipover on the right it will protect the ignition. The stock sheet metal one will smash into the ignition leaving you stranded.

The finned alt cover helps a little  but there isn't much additional meat where the metal really hits the road.

There is some truth there, as far as the cast cover being stronger, although it does stick out farther, and will hit sooner than the stock cover.

When I still had the cast cover on my bike, I had a kamikaze coyote jump into the right side of my bike at 60 MPH, and the first contact was with the point cover: it was shifted back by about 1/8", due to the bent mounting screws. I had a hell of a time getting it off...
BTW, the coyote lost!

A local guy here, about 10 years ago, hit a deer, and a fair amount of the blood was his. He did survive, but you could tell he wasn't as sharp as before the accident. :(

that's my worst nightmare. I could kill a small child or old person and keep riding. but Bambi :'(

jk. but I would never forgive myself if I killed the neighbors cat or dog.

I actually saw a deer here in San Leandro the other day. right next to Oakland, it's the city not the woods. I couldn't believe it. it looked young and scared as hell. but what do you do? you can't put a deer in your truck and take it to the shelter.

I was just lookin at an engine painting thread and noticed Aussie Terry has the same sohc points cover. I think I'll just keep that one. 'you can't see both sides after all' is a good point.
