how can i beat the heat!!
« on: May 28, 2010, 01:08:12 PM »
hey guys.  a/c in my office is for s**t, so currently it's 85.1 F at my desk!  i'm not one that takes kindly to the heat, and i know i've lived in texas most of my life, hell i was born here!  i'm just cold blooded, so the heat bothers me.  anyways, i have a small desk fan and a tower fan blowing on high most of the day, and while it works ok, it's just moving hot air.  and i'm at the awkward stage of not sweating enough for it to have a cooling effect, but it still get moist and uncomfortable!  anyways, i have an interior office, so i can't get a window unit, does anyone here have any ideas for an effective way to drop the temp around my desk, about 25 sq ft, 10-15 degrees??  oh ya, i don't want a swamp cooler, because it's already humid enough!!

Sit there in your boxers. Either they will cool it off or send you home to sit in the AC. OR cut a window unit into the cubicle. Blow the hot side toward the boss. same result.

get a bucket like used for water buckets in a stable. put ice and water in it and remove one shoe and stick your foot in. with all the blood vessels going through that area it will cool you down in a hurry.

i'm thinking this might be a good bet!  less than $50, reports say it'll drop the air by 25-30 F.  and it's USB powered, so i won't have to change the batteries all the time!

It's all in your head. You have to find a way to beat it mentally. You're thinking: "I'm sitting here at my desk in the heat, this is bs...".
But if you were in bed with a swedish model, the heat wouldn't stop you doing your thing.

About 40% of the world is hotter than Texas, and they don't have AC in those places. You just get over it and deal with it.

I worked in Japan in the summer and the a/c broke down...temp at the desk was 90F and very very humid. I dealt with it...I melted  ;D...everyone else went home  ::)

ya, Egypt and israel, sure they get hot, but it's dry.  and i know, 110 is hot no matter the humidity, but at least when you sweat there and apply a cooler breeze, your sweat can evaporate.  here, its 75+% humidity all day, and with minimal airflow in the office, you can't evaporate the sweat that lines your body.  i went home yesterday and took off my t-shirt and wife-beater, and it looked like i had been to the gym!  today = no wife-beater to see if i can stay cooler...

my boss works in milwaukee, this plant is the sister plant to the main operations in milwaukee.  the other building on the grounds has a wicked cold a/c, but the offices are a dump, and there's a TON of information in this office that i use quite regularly, so i'd rather not have to cross the grounds every time i need to print, fax, scan, look up information, etc.  personally, i'd rather just cool my personal space down a little bit, and i'd be a much happier camper!

the boss does sit in the same heat when he visits once a month for about 3 days, but the office he uses is the coolest room in this building, on average 7-10 degrees cooler.  i can't setup in there, because i don't want to have to move twice a month for the 3 days he's here...  i know i'm #$%*ing a lot, but honestly, there's NO reason a building with an a/c should be 85 throughout the day...  the f*$kin landlord doesn't do anything to keep this place working properly!  hopefully we'll have a new building asap to move into!

Evaporative/swamp coolers don't work in humid air.  And besides, there's no way that little thing is going to decrease the air temp by 30 degrees even under the best circumstances.  My full size home swamp cooler is good for about a 20 degree drop on the hottest, driest days of Summer.

i think it's because the cooling effect is so close to you.  it's just a small stream of air, and there's a relatively large amount of water to cool the small stream of air directly in front of you.  hell, even 20 degrees would be great!  it's either this little fan, or the sharper image neck cooler, but from the reviews i've read about this, this is the most effective and easiest!

My main point, though, was that evaporative coolers don't work in humid climates.  They work by drawing dry air through a wet filter medium, and the evaporation of the water into the dry air causes the temperature of the air to drop while also increasing the humidity.  It's great for dry climates like here in Colorado, but they don't do squat if the air is already humid.

If they worked in humid places you'd see them on houses all over the South, because they're way cheaper to buy and to run than conventional air conditioners.  I spent the first 28 years of my life in Texas and had never even heard of a swamp cooler until I spent some time in Nevada.  In the area where I was pretty much every house had one because they work amazingly well in that kind of environment.  I'm going to miss the cheap cooling when we move back to Texas.

what about dry ice in a tray in front of a little fan?

Do you know what dry ice is made of?
Let's see, ok, we take a huge block of dry ice and let it cool the air and as it converts from solid to gas (sublimates) the O2 in the room is  displaced with CO2. You get sleepy and go to sleep and if there's enough CO2 in the air then you die.
dry ice is made from frozen CO2, carbon dioxide

Best solution for beating the heat, move to a location where it doesn't get hotter than you can stand.
Or, man up & pay for cooling that works...

After the air temperature approaches body temperature you won't get much benefit from fans moving air. Evaporation isn't an option in higher humidity environments so you sweat and it doesn't evaporate.

I looked at that a year or so ago.  I have an old cooler and two 5 or 6 inch 12 vdc fans.  I plan on making a summer project with the kids out of it.  I plan on wiring a cigarette plug adapter to it and putting in in my van.  I wonder if it really works?

Possibly if you're sitting with your face directly in front of the air outlet you might get a cool breeze, but I doubt it will do any more than that.  That could be kind of nice if you have the cooler sitting immediately next to you, but then you'd have to have the windows closed or it would completely lose its effect.

I was trying to find a post on my VW forum where someone made one with a heater core and a small pump.  Put Ice water in, it goes through the pump to the heater core, a fan in front of the heater core moves the now cooled air to you.  They posted it with pics of the temp dropping in thier bug by 20 degrees.   The interior of a bug is much smaller than your office, but it cold be a fun weekend project.    An oil cooler should work just as well as a heater core if you have one laying around.

well i understand how a swamp cooler works, but i guess i'm just optimistic about how well a small cooler like this would work.  plus, some of the reviews on amazon are from places like lexington, KY.  Florida, the coast in CA, places that aren't the driest around either.  when i get a little extra cash, i feel like it'll be worth it to try.  if not, i'll return it, and bite the bullet for a little bit of money and a learning experience.
