Found myself in a similar situation the other day..seriously happy no one was coming the other way. I've logged a buncha miles as well and consider myself pretty good at reading the road, but it wasn't banked like the previous curves and I ran out. Probably could have held my lane, or at least stayed on the line if someone had been coming the other way, as it was I called myself a dumb#$%* and slowed down a bit..Helmets are great, might not have worn one that day if it wasn't the law, although these days, I probably would just to keep the sun off my bald head, but a helmet won't keep you from splattering yourself all over someone elses front end if you miss a corner too fast, or over the cliff on the other side of the road...

I really, really need to stop reading these threads right before hopping on my bike to drive home.  They always make me a bit paranoid - with a helmet.

You should always be a bit paranoid on the streets, no matter how much safety equipment you're wearing.  It's what keep you alive to ride another day.

1+ Ride as if the people around you are trying to kill you. Don't give them the opportunity.
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!
Helmets save brains. Always wear one and ride like everyone is trying to kill you....

Yeah, I parrot the same thing to every n00b rider I meet...That was went more as a "why to I do these things to myself" comment, not a "Oh my goodness, this riding thing is new and scary" one.   ;D

Alas, poor weekend_junkie! I knew him, Cafe, a fellow of infinite
jest, of most excellent fancy. His CB hath bore him on its back a
thousand times, and now how abhorr'd in my imagination it is!

Hey Meathead, the word was 'gorge' not 'gore', and I was thinking along the lines of 'en-gorged'... something that happens to your pecker when the blood flows from your tiny brain to your...well, you know, 'Mr. Micro-penis'... :D :D :D

To wear or not to wear, it's your choice. I wear one partially because of safety but also because I've seen some of the bug remains and ick I don't want that goo on my face. Not to mention the rocks and other crap that hits my helmet, besides I'm married who the hell would I need to impress?
That which does not kill you leaves cool scabs which turn into awesome scars.

Here in Colorado its not required and most HD rides do not wear them. It must fit the image, I would say 50/50 on crotchers.
I ride with a helmet 99% of the time, if I am just going around the immediate neighborhood steets trying to figure out a issue I may not slip one on. But any ride outside of that, I always put mine on. Why do I, well first and foremost, I think I look badass in my Cafe inspired bucket with my Snoopy googles.  :P
But really, when you work in an ICU, you learn to live life to the fullest, but count your blessings you have what you have.  I would like to keep my gray goo on the inside.

Not to go into it, but currently we have a 40 year old lady in my ICU, who got hit on a scooter witout a helmet.  Needless to say, if she had any chance of recovery, she probably would have wished she wore her helmet.

But to each thier own, its a free state, not against the law, so if you don't want to wear a helmet, its your choice.
