This is for the 750 guys, as each bike no doubt has its own vibration signature. I wonder how much vibration do you get in your mirrors. Let's say a group of cars are behind you on the freeway at freeway speeds. The choices are:

1) I can tell how pretty the lady drivers are.

2) I can sort of tell what make/model the cars are.

3) I can count the cars.

4) I cannot count the cars, but can tell that some have their lights on and some do not.

4) Cars? What cars?

At freeways speeds I can see what the models are (if they are close enough mind you). I have the DCC barend mirrors. Short stems, about 2 inchest, and mirror at about 2 inches as well. On clubman bars. They dont really fuzz up on me at all, just at that speed its hard to tell in such a small mirror.

That's a good question and something I've been wondering about for awhile. I'd say I can generally make out the kind of car I'm seeing (all being relative to the distance behind) but what I wonder is why one mirror looks more fuzzy than the other? Can one side of the bike be less tuned than the other causing more vibration and blur in the rear views than the other side? And if so, what are the harmonic vibrations that cause it and how does one correct it? Carb sync, valve lash adjust? Just what's traveling up the handlebars to the mirror?

All engines have resonant frequencies, to counter this use bar end weights,they will definitely help and if you really need to see clearly at the vehicle behind {is it the cops?} then pull in the clutch for a second and have a look, i have been doing this on most of my bikes for years....

I should add that the roughness of the road surface and the stiffness of the suspension will also effect the vibes through the bars...

Good question. I found it depends on the mirrors. Bar end mirrors though small are very very clear even at speed. On the other hand the stock mirrors are #4 or worse at speed...I am with Mick in that bar end weights may help but keep in mind that it may be mirror specific as well.

A PO put some custom rectangular short mirrors on mine, I get a nice view of my arms and on the side some blurry cars. gotta order some stockers.

i'm the 2nd number 4

but that's because i don't have a mirror on my bike currently. i know i know, i need one! just looking for the right one! (it's on my 01 spirit 750, and it's a hard tail w/ 12" apes, so it's a difficult decision!) but i do plan on some old school looking under the handle bar or nice foldable bar end mirrors w/ weighted bar ends to make them more useful!

Barend mirrors make a difference for sure. I can tell what the make of that car is is and sometimes know enough to slow down and see if that lady cop is good looking

I chalk part of that up to the fact that my barends are fisheyed. It is like camera shake diminishing when the zoom is all the way out (wide angle).

I am going to make an assumption here, the bar end mirrors are doing the same thing as the bar end weights, putting the weight at the end of the bars helps dampen the vibrations. So for those wanting normal mirrors i suggest again bar end weights....

The bikes I bought with aftermarket mirrors were pretty blurry. Then I bought OEM Honda mirrors and no blur.

There are also mirror "isolators". My Kawasaki KLR650 came with them. It's a 1 inch (or so) piece that screws into your mirror mount. It is then shaped kind of like a small cup with rubber in it. The rubber contains the piece of metal that has female threads that your mirror mounts to. My brothers both have KLRs with no isolators and I "claim" to be able to tell a difference.

We all have bar end weights.

With the 750 I would say #2 I see the makes of the cars and such, it's not too bad.

With the 350 I can't see jack... Infact the glass vibrated out one of the original mirrors and shattered on the road & and I had to replace it.

First I've heard of bar end weights. Do they just fit in the end of the hollow bars? Remove the grips and put them in? Do they vary in weight? Are the commonly available at a bike shop?

Must be the case. After reading this thread and thinking, no blur comes to mind when I ride, it must be the OEM mirrors vs. others.

Those things were stock on Suzuki's in 1970's, probably still availble.
They have modified them and fit closer to mirror head on new Suzuki Gladius.
I still have about 6~7 NOS.
Have to change clutch side mount on Yamaha's because of left hand thread

These are the "vibration isolators" as described above; they have them at JC Whitney, currently on sale for $1.95 apiece. I've never used them, but they look interesting

I've never broken one so they are pretty robust (genuine Suzuki)
The only problem I've found is the mirrors move back slightly at speed because of wind resistance.
Shows they isolate mirror though

Zombie thread, that I started, but now I have something to report. I recently dropped the coin for a pair of NOS factory mirrors. They ARE worth the money. I can see everything behind me now, with no blurrrrrr. Very happy.

I could in 1972, today not so much.

I'm not talking about those in the mirrors...just all of 'em...

I still have the factory mirrors on mine, they are pretty good when I re-glue the mirrors to the frames: about every 10 years or so the rubber insert that holds the mirrors shrinks (some more) and then they start shaking and vibrating, so I have to glue them down.

I hear that. Today's automotive styling, or should I say lack thereof, is pathetic. But there is still variety in pretty girls and therefore the world still makes sense.
