Topic: 76' cb750k build part 2, GSXR conversion

So off the bat i'm cheating a little. I bought this bike 2 months ago, tore it down, and am working on getting my parts lookin pretty. So this first post is going to be a bit of a catch up!

ok link works.  So Mainly i've been doing 2 things: sandblasting and powdercoating. I built this scary looking sandblasting cabinet from some harborfreight parts and an old kitchen cabinet!


WOrks pretty good! Heres some parts after powdercoating. I bought the powdercoating setup also from harborfreight- about $50 bucks, and got an extra large convection toaster oven from the salvation army!



I also took a big risk many of us have contemplated. I took a hammer to my gas tank to make knee indents. Came out pretty good too! Can see them well in this picture, i can upload some closeups if anyone is interested. Here it is with the carpy seat I got...



And here I found a PERFECT fit  taillight for the seat!


Its actually from a 2009 ducati 696. I will have to make a bracket for it.

ANd as of today, I'm cleaning up the carbs. I took a dremel to them and they are getting nice n shiny, but im still not too sure how detailed I should get with it, I feel like its just going to look like it was in a few months..? I have been tempted to powdercoat...


SO now Im all caught up and dont feel bad about not contributing! I'll be getting into the engine for the first time soon, along with painting, upholstering, electrical, and a bunch of other things not on my budget!

Looks nice, I have thought about that powdercoat kit from harbor freight. Your parts look good so thats encouraging.

What product did you use to buff with the dremel? where did you get the seat?

Nice start!  I dig your blasting cabinet.  I built my own as well, but I only do soda blasting in mine.  
I am contemplating buying a powder coating kit as well, but I haven't really started looking yet.  Is there anything you would change with your setup/oven now that you have it going?

THe main thing is a bigger compressor. its only a 6 gallon. With the blasting, The compressor goes on after about 10 seconds, and I have to stop after a minute and let it catch up. I get around it by having other things to do at the same time.
 THe powder gun works great. It seems the two keys are a clean environment and good prep.  a few times ill lay the powder on nice and a few seconds later theres some dust that clung onto it statically. And it doesnt just dissapear in the oven (as i had hoped the first time) you can just blow it off softly and might have to add a little powder. 
As for prep, i clean the part with simplegreen, sandblast, airspray off the dust, rub with a clean cloth and acetone,  then spray with acetone while hanging so any remaining drips off the part, then prebake (burns of any remaining crap), then partial cool. some people may have a better way, but this seems to have been working for me.

Aluminum is more of a pain than steel. You can have the part all clean, powder lays nice, then while baking, little bubbles show up! It doesnt seem to happen with newer aluminum, and its usually not too bad. For example, my fork lower came out with 3 or 4 pin sized ones. Wasnt worth redoing the whole thing. I think pros use some sort of phosphate, but i havent looked to far for it.

And theres a few different types of powder. I used urethane- supposedly the best for outdoor.  And one last thing (sorry im rambling), you will probably be hanging your part, mine hang from a chain thats grounded. BE CAREFUL if you holding the chain(to turn the part) while spraying, if the gun gets too close the charge goes through you! happened to me twice, now I wear rubber gloves! I dont know why there is charge in the handle of the gun! oh wait, its harbor freight...

What product did you use to buff with the dremel? where did you get the seat?

THe seat is from cb750cafe.com. It seams to be the same on as the airtech cb75021. I went with carpy only because to order the airtech you have to call- i hate phones.

With the carbs Im using a wire brush, then those little polishing cotton bits with red wax. Its coming out ok, definately better. Im finding there just no polishing bit small enough to fit in the crevices of the the carbs. Im also using a benchtop wheel for the larger areas. ANf wear glasses with the wire brush! they fly everywhere!

Did you have any problems getting that seat to match up with your hinges? Mine would not match up with the hinges/ seat lock so I ended up welding studs to the frame and bolting the seat to it. Nice find on that tail light. I was looking at late 90's ducati lights but I think I may go with two small round lights instead.

those tiny bubbles on your fork lowers are a result of outgassing...the aluminum is letting out gas due to the rise in temp.  you should try pre-bakiing your aluminum parts at about 50-100 degrees higher than the powder cure temp for a half hour or so before powdering and curing.  powder-coating is extremely easy and those cheap setups can give amazing results!

I put the stock hinges on it like it's supposed to be, only I have a hell of a time getting it to latch, and I just live with it that way.  It still burns me when I think about Airtech - I'd like to tell them that their quality sucks.

I have has the worst luck with fork gaitors. THe originals were torn. I bought now ones from partsnmore, along with specially sized grommets to take the place of the need for a fork ear, and one gaitor tore up the seam. SO after a long hunt for a fork gaitor that would fit snug onto the fork tube, I found a match. BUt this is what they ACTUALLY look like on the bike.


seems like they are made to stay about 2 inches longer. I'm thinking maybe I can cut them shorter from the middle, and overlap the bellows ontop of eachother?

The PC'd parts look great.  I wouldn't have guessed you could do that nice of a job at home.  Post a pic of the toaster when you get a chance - I'm trying to visualize size and it isn't working!

Those caliper bolts are hard to find! I was hoping to get them in stainless(I'm trying to replace any bolts with stainless) but this thread spacing/size combo is obsolete it seems! I found these black ones for a couple bucks on eBay. Theres more on there if anyone is looking! Said yamaha on the packaging
