Back to the original post...

He said "what would you do if I came round there and punched you in the head"?
Now my first reaction was, bring it on I'm a little out of practice...but then I reasoned that this was a very public area and he had 2 wee girls in the back seat, seeing Daddy getting his head bounced off the road by a stranger could well be detrimental to their mental health.
So I said in my most "Official" voice very calmly "I'd have to arrest you"!
He nearly choked, guess he was thinking just my luck to rage at an off duty cop. ;D

That was brilliant!  I had tears in my eyes while I was laughing.

I don't have a motorcycle, sold it ('85 Yamaha Venture Royale).  Haven't had a CB750 for over 40 years.

This will forever be a circular argument with no resolution possible. We have the Second Amendment which has been upheld. This is unique in the World. The 50 States can enact their own regulations up to a point, and again, we have 50 States with a high degree of autonomy in this area.

The number of weapons sold over the years and still existing is unknown, and is thought to exceed to total population. There were no paperwork requirements for decades, so it would be impossible to track down every rifle, shotgun and handgun sold and resold in the past 75 years or more with no paper trail and try to register it.

The Genie is out of the bottle in the US and it will not go back in. We can only manage the situation as best we can and stop arguing about it.

This is truly an American centric discussion on the merits of various firearms. Any comparison to the UK, Canada, or anywhere else is not possible. The private ownership of firearms as it evolved in the US is entirely different.

Well said Bobby!

Here in Canada we have spent more than a billion dollars trying to put a gun registry in place, and that is in a society where hand guns are prohibited.
The costs are astronomical and the benifit negligable. You just have to work with what you got.

+1 well said Bobby. As ever the Voice of Reason ;)

I should add that my original comments were never about gun control but more about responding appropriately to a road rage incident i.e. no guns are required.

I read quite a while back that Australia was in the process of outlawing knives over a certain length because people who enjoy fighting with each other were taking to the streets playing "Highlander".

May help to actually ask an Aussie mate....that story is rubbish.....Funny thing is that you Americans all rave on about guns as part of a freedom rant usually but in all seriousness you are less free than most of the western world. We don't have guns but we are definitely free, we do have "nanny" laws here but not having guns makes me feel safer, i have been in many situations that would have been far worse if guns had been present. And about the "constitutional"stuff, it was written 334 years ago and is struggling to be relevant in todays world.....Especially the "right to bare arms"  part......Flame away..... ;D

I have read a couple historians(really sorry I can't back this up with names/sources)who claim that U.s. founding fathers included the second amendment in the Constitution partially as a balance of power, so that Police and Military would not have all the power.
If it works good, it looks good...

I respectfully beg to differ. The US Constitution was written by some of the most brilliant and far thinking people alive at the time. To form a Government that defined the rights of the people vs the government was unheard of and very radical for it;s time. No Royalty, no State Religion, one person one vote, freedom of speech, assembly, self incrimination, etc. It is the US Constitution many others are patterned after, probably your own has most of it in there.

It may be 334 years old and that argument is used by those who would like to subvert it more than it has been. It is still relevant, and it was written in a way that it can be interpreted to fit the times.

I cannot speak about the freedoms in Australia vs the US, I do not live in Australia and I am unsure of what you define as freedom. I did meet a lot if Australians and I suspect I would feel comfortable there, and you would probably feel comfortable here.

The current movement is back to the Constitution and many States are reasserting their rights. People are being voted out of office that advocate big government. People are protesting all this Homeland Security crap and are becoming more unwilling to give up their freedom for some false sense of security. I sense a growing awareness of some erosion of the basic freedoms and in the last election the people reminded their elected officials that they will be held accountable, and it makes the remaining nervous.

It is very difficult for people outside and many inside the US to understand how complex a place it is. It is not one homogeneous place. It is 50 States, and as I said in my other post many laws are different.

I am a Constitutionalist I take the whole document as a complete work. I cannot cherry pick the parts I like and discard the parts I don't. It is a living document and valid as written. It has lasted this long which is a pretty good run. Now have at me, I love to play. ;D

I agree Bobby, there are some great moral passages and rights built into the constitution but as an outsider looking in it seems that it is being "used" to do things that it was not written for, at the time it was written, you can't tell me that the gun laws that were relevant then have the same relevance now, it also seems to keep the smart criminals from prison. It seems that the original ideas it was written for are overlooked for the sake of some that just don't give a #$%* about what it was really meant to stand for and exploit it for all its worth...

Agreed, people push the envelope on freedom of speech, and the like. You have to take the good with the bad. It has never been easy. You put up with it, since the big picture is what counts.

May help to actually ask an Aussie mate....that story is rubbish.....

So there are no regulations regarding swords and bayonets?  A different forum I was on had members complaining about not being able to sell or ship them down there, or perhaps it was the possibility of not being able to..and I sure thought there were some Aussies complaining about not being able to get a bayo to fit their Enfields (it was a collectors forum)..but again, it was quite a while ago and, in spite of "laws", there is not a doubt in my mind that there are thousands (in a land of millions, perhaps hundreds of thousands) of otherwise law abiding Aussies who have a pistol tucked away somewhere and would never think of surrendering to the government, a family heirloom that their grandad had carried thru, or captured during, one of the world wars. We all (in the "free world" anyway) have the freedom to decide what to do with our property and lives, and choose which laws we obey or not. I don't have one as an expression of my freedom, but rather, since we do have that "freedom" and there are so many out there, it is just a more effective way to protect myself, since it's generally considered a bad idea to "take a knife to a gunfight". I, too, have been in situations that would have been much worse had guns been involved. Just because we have them, doesn't mean they are omnipresent, the vast majority of gun owners are actually fairly discreet about it.  And I applaud Hush, and his family, for his handling of the situation. It was the "You'd shoot someone over a parking space?" comment that sort of side tracked the thread, when in fact, no one said anything about shooting anyone over a parking space  ::), or a soccer mom backing into anyones car.. ::) ::)

I shouldn't, but if I had to live in a place where packing a weapon was necessary I wouldn't, even if it meant having to live in a place with no people, if you pack because of your job, fine, but you're doing it for protection that's not a life, and I would check your reasons deeply, if you're doing it to fell deadly, that's also not a life and you reasons are even more suspect, am I afraid of guns, swords, etc, no, do I want to be bothered living in a place where weapons are needed no.

All I can say to those who do not want to worry about guns, live as good as you can. if the day comes where you could have defended your family if you just had a gun, I guarantee you will change your mind about them. Threats are not just from other people with guns or even knives and whatnot.
Also, not every can just pack up and move if the area suddenly does not suit their sensibilities. Sometimes you are stuck right where you are.

Skunk Stripe I say again, am I afraid of guns no, but I have grown up to the point I neither feel the need to be threatened or deadly, in other words my teenage years are over, I'm not slamming you I've just hit the point where contemplating some of the mystery's of life are more important to me and will be until I pack in. As far as living in one spot for awhile that's never bothered me either, but I've always striven to do better (make it better, not sure which) so moving to peace and quiet to look at clouds and sunsets is a natural for me and mine.

Back on point. Hush you did the right thing Mate. You did not pummel the guy even though he deserved a good smack. Think of how quickly things could have gotten out of hand if you did not act professionally or responsibly. He is probably a big mouth bully that has been getting away with this for years. Someday, he will meet someone who does not look like a bad ass and will punch out his lights.
