1st time using an o-ring chain: anything special I need to know?
« on: December 05, 2010, 10:24:19 AM »
Prolly a dumb question but I'm gonna ask.
Better that than break a chain....

So... I'm installing an o-ring chain.
I've never used one before. Do I need to do anything special?
It's got a master like the one below. So just press/clip it on as usual and go?

I don't know if an O-Ring chain is an issue on the 750's but they will carve through the cases os a 500-550.

Nothing special and do as you describe making sure the master clip is on the right way (direction of travel). Ive used o-rings on my CB750 since 1999 with no issues and would never go back!
good luck
Andy

You can also use a master link that is riveted like most newer bikes.  Don't need to worry about losing the circlip.  That said on my old Hondas I use circlip master links.  I did use the riveted on on my GIXXER because it does have a bit more power.

Yup, just use the little packet of lube that comes with the master link, you won't be able to just clip the keeper clip as easily as you would a non-o-ring master though. The trick is to use a pair of small c-clamps one at each end of the master's side plate, tighten them down pretty well and leave them for a few minutes, then tighten them a little more and leave them for a few minutes. After the o-rings are squished you'll have a little time before they expand again and you'll be able to get the clip clipped on easily enough. I read this trick here somewhere.

Yeah, the side plate is usually a press fit, but care must be taken not to press it on too far. Just far enough to expose the groove on each pin that holds the clip. anymore will flatten the ORings too much and in the extreme may kink the link.
Besides using a tool designed for the purpose... small C clamps work and I use a pair of small pliars that i have narrowed to fit between the pins. Then squeeze the jaws of those pliars with a larger pliar like a vice grip or a channel lock.
