ill be able to help ya out on the part of my ride with pictures, was a news photographer for a while. never attempted to take a picture while riding but theres always a first for everything

Just from a pure theoretical standpoint... and I would never try this... but a throttle lock is very nice because most cameras want to use your right hand.  There have been some very cool home brew mounting systems built with PVC, hose clamps and a little hardware.  There's also some nice mounting systems made for this.  I think rolling video would be great as well.  Having said all that, I would hate to see a dropped camera or worse a bike mishap.  Maybe speed ahead (within the speed limit of course ;)) and pull over to takes pics of the bikes coming through.  Among the most valuable pictures will be in parking lots and at scenic locations with the current crew, bikes and of course Soichiro Godzilla.

Well, I bought my CB550 last Saturday (3/5). It's been sitting for about 30 years (seriously) and inside of the tank is a mess (but cleanable I believe), but the rest of the bike including the 4x4 exhaust is in perfect shape. I pick it up 3/12 or 3/13, which should give me plenty of time have everything cleaned and adjusted and all the kinks out by the time the ride gets to Chicago 5/21.

Put me down as a defininite probably.  ;D

Is this our rough route?  I understand we prolly won't be doing I-70.  We can try to keep the visual map updated in Google Maps.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF&msa=0&msid=206152319077597495423.00049d398b3534f48c9d9

I would stay off of Interstate 55 if possible. It's dead boring. As an alternative cross the Mississippi then follow the Great River Road (which is actually several roads) north to Quincy (which has a very nice brew pub in the middle of town) then pick up the Illinois River Road through Peoria and eventually Joliet and Chicago. It passes through or near several state parks and is a very nice ride. I did it last year down from Chicago with a buddy. Best of all, no interstates.

A group ride up Lake Shore Drive is a must, and a swing in to visit Delilah's, a bar in the city that hosts the annual Rocker's vs Mods or Twisted Spoke is highly recommended.

The video rig worked really well. So good I could see your speedo well exceed the posted limit sign you passed!  Not to mention rolling through the stop signs. Nice work and some footage like this with some bikes out ahead would be awesome.

I just talked to Jerry, no dates are for sure yet, but he is working on it. The Great River Road is a good idea too! It gets me close to home along the way too. Maybe a layover before Chitown. I have a mini cam for my dragster, I haven't used it on the bike yet but intend to.

You can also keep following the Miss all the way up to Galena then cut across to Chicago. Lots of great 2-lanes.

I like route 2 from Dixon to Byron also, it goes through the state park with the Chief blackhawk statue. I make good use of the allison transmission when towing the race car trailer through there. Love the auto downshift with the 8.1 gas engine. Sometimes I get stuck behind some sunday riders on their big V twins and have to slow down. ;D

The objective is to involve everyone who wants to so you're in as much as anyone. No firm schedules yet and there's still plenty of time to figure that out. If I'm not mistaken, looks like we won't be taking a handoff until June.

The current thinking is possibly mid May. BUT there still may be weather delays for the early riders. We will need to stay tuned.

Weather, eh. My mapping in CO has to deal with 2 routes that may not have opened from the winter  ;) AND the CA guys have to cross the Sierras before they get to us. Not to mention the "less tall" passes in NV and UT. Minor details  ;)  ;D

I'm thinking that a very good route through OHIO might be...Cincinnati - Dayton - Columbus - Toledo - Cleveland - Akron - Youngstown - Hand-off in Pittsburgh to 05c50(Paul)

Old Scrambler from Wisconsin butting in again..............I am noting that some of you are suggesting riding up the M-River to Quincy or even further and then taking Hwy 20 (kind of nice west of Freeport) to Chicago.  I have a rider (Whaleman) in Davenport and possibly another in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, that I would like to fit in.

I know a lot will depend on the weather so dates are only guesses at this point. The National Motorcycle Museum (just north of Davenoprt) has a show on June 2-3 and the ride could continue directly to Chicago or up to Road America and then to Chicago.

When the ride comes back from eastern Canada it will pass through Michigan and into Wisconsin sometime in late July or early August. If Milwaukee and RA were already covered (and with direct coverage by MOTORCYCLE CLASSICS at RA on June 10th) we could go from the UP more directly to LaCrosse and the eventual ride would be on schedule to get to the Pacific NW before the mountain passes close. If this suggestion would work, the Chicago area riders may want to be on the June 12th ride from RA to Chicago.

The weather will have a lot to do with the timing.........remember how many days it tends to rain in May and June!

Team Central should receive Godzilla no later than 5/15 and hopefully a week sooner. Just realized that my routing needs to be changed. Probably won't impact dates though. I was thinking of Memorial Day as the first of May and not June. A couple of my roads will still be buried under 20' of snow and not open.

OK.........I see the dates for the exchange from Kansas to Mo is expected on 5/15...........so no pressing need to schedule Davenport or RA at this time. If all goes well you guys will have it through Chicago and onto Indy before Memorial Day.  One of my favorite photo-opps in Chicago is the Rock n Roll McDonalds...........Oh and the view from the convenience store window in the back room of John Hancock Center down to the top of the Playboy building is very nice on sunny days!

I can give moral support, accompany IT on my FJR. But can't commit to a SOHC presence. I'm shooting to have Phaedrus on the road by Memorial Day (May 30th) with or without a paint job. But no guarantees.

Old Scrambler,I would like to get the whaleman and friend on the route and the mississippi river road is fun, I did it once from K.C. with 13 street rods, CB radios and radar detectors. 65mph with gusts up to 80! Some people just stopped in the road to watch us go by. Scary. Southern Illinois guys sound OK to you?
