Ikon Shock Question

Hello everyone,

So I am quite torn on my rear shock selection. I am having a hard time picking between Ikon 7610 and 7614 for my 550. I will mainly be riding on the street with some highway. I may do some more aggressive type riding next year after the engine rebuild. My issue lies in spending the extra cash on the 7614's. I really like the look of the 7614 shock but think the 7610 would be better for my application. Any thoughts?

Also, I was told there is an option on the 7610 to make slightly longer to help improve handling that is more like the 750? Hadn't heard about this. Any insight?

the progressive ones look good and are about the same price as the Ikon shocks...  I think it recommends the 412 series for our 550's

Well I "get" the cycle-x.  Only they are out of the shorty again.  Is there another source?

The Cycle-X shocks are just the same inventory that partnmore and everyone sells for about $90. They're cheap, Chinese made shocks that while giving a better ride than 35 year old stock shocks today, still ride like hell. In this case, you do get what you pay for.

I'd encourage you to look at Ikon, Hagon, and some Progressive shocks, especially if you are trying to achieve some sort of period correct look.
This project started in confusion and will end in disarray.

You beat me too it, Cyclex have some awesome products but those shocks are cheap crap. Guys race with Hagon and IKon so that should tell you something.....I have used Progressive springs in my forks and they were excellent, no experience with their shocks.

Things you want: Adjustable preload. Adjustable rebound damping. Ikon shocks have both of those. If you also want compression damping, then you'll have to spend more bux.

If you really want to get a good set up, make sure you get the right spring rate to your springs.

I have a set of 14's and I don't regret paying the extra dough, you won't have to worry about rust with the aluminum bodies- bonus.

Decided on Ikon for a few reasons. 1. I like the look of them. 2. Price is not to bad. 3. Good features 4. Seem to have good performance and reliability.

@Industrial - How is the adjusting for road use? When talking with the sales rep I got the impression that the 10's are a little easier to adjust for everyday street riding. What has your experience been with that?

Not sure I have seen it mentioned here before, but Hagons were originaly Girling's from the 60/70's. Ikon's we already know are Koni's from the70's. I would imagine they have been further developed using more modern materials. Both were used for racing back then and now of course.
you won't have to worry about rust with the aluminum bodies- bonus.
 
you do have to worry about oxidation though, my Ikon adjusters are solid after years of standing before I got the bike, still not been able to free them, one day I will need to invest in some replacements.

I got the cycle-x shocks and they are pretty stiff. They look real nice and they're better than the ones that were bottoming out. I just didn't have $200 to spend at the time. I'm sure I'll replace them at some point.

Damping is adjusted with the number dial- pretty easy and preload can be changed with the supplied spanner- a little tougher. http://www.ikonsuspension.com/content/shock_fitting_and_adjustment.shtml

No rebound adjustment from what I understand.

I remember Terry remarked that his alloy body Konis seized on him also but I think his were bought used also. I guess if you have the aluminum alloy bodied shocks you want to make sure you rebuild them every couple of years to make sure that does not happen.

Regular use and keeping them clean would be all that is needed to keep them in good working order.

Because you CAN NOT select the sprig rate rate which people who give dam about handling want to do. I am not sure that these Chinese turds are improvement over the stock ones in any way. The stock shocks were developed by Honda for the bike. What were these developed for and by whom?
