CB125s "Big Blue" is UN-DONE!

Picked up another CB125s
Guy said i had low compression but we shall see if it runs. Its a 73. I think i will use the parts off my 78 as a donor for any thing that needs to be replaced.

I would like to do a real cafe out of this one. 12v conversion, clip ons, a cafe seat, might try and do some rearsets, extended swingarm, big bore (still in the box), and possibly a re work of my scramble pipe in to a straight pipe with exhasut wrap. Who knows! I always change my mind but first things first, i will try and get it running and then ride it to see what problems it has.  i like my cl so much i had to have another. I get so many coments and thumbs up when i ride it. Way more then when i rode my 750 or 550. You got any parts i can have JAG? i need a tank.

After loking around a bit, 1973 was the first year of the cb125. 1974 they switched to disk brakes. So mine was produced in 73 but is a 74 model.

Got it out of the truck today. Put a little oil in it, dumped some in the top end and a few drips in the cylinder. Then i did a compression test. Im sure its a little high because i put some oil in it but the results were encouraging. Right around 200 psi. Pulled the carb apart and it needs cleaning bad but i have a rebuild kit sitting around for it and im off to honda to get a new set of floats.

I see the REAL problem...the rear tire is flat which made the carb sit at a funny level, and the fuel not drain from the tank properly. Put some air in the tire and she'll be good to go.

I did buy a tube but i have to try and get it in there. I rebuilt the carbs but im not sure if the replacement neddle is the correct taper. The main jet was the wrong one so it makes me question the rest of the kit. Put it all together and kicked it over. It sputtered to life and then died. Cant get it to start. The spark is not there or is blue and week. So I think im going to order a set of points and a condenser. Does that sound about right? Oh!! i just had a thought. I can take the parts off my 78 125 and use that. First thing in the morning.

IT RUNS!! swaped out the coil and condenser from my parts bike and put in a new spark plug. Adjusted the cam chain now i need to do the vales and put a tube in the back tire and take it for a spin. Maybe today, we shall see how much time i have.

@Greggo, I do have plans for this one but i have to try and balance time and money between it and the 550. So stay tuned.

It was not a bad price for the bike, and after a few hours of work and about $50 it runs. Thats what i love about the small bikes.

New Tube. New points, adjusted valves, replaced bent foot brake and it fires up first kick even without a battery. I need to get a battery so it doesnt die every time i hit the brakes.

The bike would run fine but at full throttle it would bog out and almost die. I pulled the needle out and compared it to the stock one. It was a bit fatter. So i switched it to the orignal one and it runs fine now. So the only thing that is any good from the carb kit is the gaskets and the slow jet. I wonder if i used the thicker needle and the 110 jet from the kit if that would work... Any way the bike runs pretty good now. The brakes are a little weak. I took the bike to get it registerd and the DMV said that the guy I bought it from was not the last titled owner and that i need to get a bill of sale from the guy who had it before the guy i bought it from. Its slowly becoming a mess of #$%*.

ffjmoore - Nice bike, sorry to read the part about the DMV...Can you get it registered as an antique and bypass all the BS?

A few years ago, my g/f decided she wanted to learn how to ride...And it just so happen my next door neighbor had a CB125s tucked away in his garage that needed a bit 'o work.  So after some haggling, and back and forth nonsense to get the title notarized, got it for her, and after a good weekend's work, had it running.


Eventually it got sold on ebay for the amount of the sale + parts, and then she replaced it with a new Honda Rebel.

One funny story that did happen with that bike - Right after I got it running, took it out for a shakedown ride...Everything's going okay, but then start feeling a low rumble, which slowly got louder, and was there thinking "Oh great, there's something wrong with the bottom end of the motor...and she just got this thing and she's really looking forward to riding it..." 

Keep in mind, was wearing a full face helmet which makes stuff quieter than it really is...Then the rumble started getting LOUD and LOUDER...At this point, I am going "Wait a minute, the motor isn't losing power at all - the throttle/tach is zinging up and down pretty smooth..."  The bike was responding just fine, but a ton of noise...

Then a huge shadow comes over the bike.  I look up and see the underside of the Commemorative Air Force's B-24!!  Turned out the flight path to Wheeler Airport was overhead...

It wasn't restored - I just cleaned it up, repaired some of the electrics and replaced some switches, and installed new fork seals...Think it sold for $690 total on ebay.  I've seen one go as high as $1100, but it was a pristine condition example, and that was also when gas shot up to $4 a gallon and everyone was searching for gas sippers like the cb125s.

Pics can be misleading, but that does look VERY clean.  I'll have to post pics of my 100 when I get it back in town so you can see how easy you had it!

Any new progress on either of your thumpers FF? Your threads are the only thing keeping me sane until I go pick up the hundo this weekend from my farm.  I'll tell ya, it'll be nice to have something to tinker with and still be able to ride my 750.  Can't wait!!!

I was going to ride lola a bit before i tore into her but withthe registrations thing hold me up Im going to start in on the 12 volt conversion. Heading down to the junk yard to find a 12v headlight that will fit or a whole new bucket.

My other bike frank is at a stand still. I really like where the bike is at so im leaving it alone for now.

Other thing on my list is to build a cafe seat for lola.

DOve right in a started the 12 volt conversion. No pictures sorry, my hands were to greasy. So the 350 stator slides right in no problem. The little rubber boot that seals the spot where the wires run through the case is a different size on the 350. Somebody had said just use some silicone. What i did was cut the wires on the 125 stator and slide the seal off. Then i drilled the 3 holes out a little bigger. Then i cut the ends of the 350 stator used some heat shrink and attached each one to another wire and slid them through the rubber seal. Easy.

Then i crimped on some connectors and attached it to the bike.
Next i wired up the reg/rec.
After that i kicked it over and it started. Now im working on my LED brake light.

Ill have to fire it up again and check out how many volts it is putting out.
