Smaller rear turn signals on a 550K?
« on: July 06, 2011, 10:37:02 AM »
The P.O. of my '77 550 replaced the head light and front turn signals with aftermarket, but left the stock rear signals on there. I'm trying to decide whether to go back stock or maybe change the rear signals to something smaller.

The front is easy. I have several options with headlight ears, mounting, etc. But what's a good way to go with something smaller on the rear? The rear signals are the kind that are mounted on the grab bar and I don't see an easy way to swap to something smaller.

That's probably why the PO didn't do it. Seems like you could cut the tube portion of the mount that's welded to the grab bar, making it short enough that the early style OEM lights which are smaller, or the sportbike lights like on the front would work.

If you don't want to hack on the grab bar light mounts, you'll need to get some longer TS stems which are available, but you'll have to search.

Also a little tacky, but you could make it look good... Bolt a strap or flat plate right onto the mount of the grabbar. Then you could put any light you want on it. Hanging down a little bit or straight back.

I thought I saw a thread about how to add after market signals to stock stalks or something, but can't find it now.

I've got these smaller, aftermarket ones on my 350F that I think would work on yours. They are easy to find on eBay and such.

Yep, I found those, too, after posting this thread. I think I could either trim the stock posts or file down the part on the grab rail and make those work.

Also, I'll be calling Dime City Cycles later to verify, but how would you read this ad? These signals are usually sold in pairs. Does it look like they're asking $15.95 for a pair (which is a deal) or each (not so much a deal)?

You might want to reconsider

Just my opinion.....those 77/78 grab bars signal tubes have a tendency to break because of the weight and bounce of the signals...

It is a typical problem and if your bar is in good shape not cracked you may want to keep it .......I spent a lot of time trying to find a good one,for my bike(Stock)

But it is your bike and your build......

TJJKC, mine's in good shape. Maybe the smaller signals will lessen the bounce?
