How can you remove pinstripping from a side cover?
« on: May 02, 2006, 06:12:11 PM »
The previous owner of my K5 painted white pinstriping on the side covers.  I would love to get the paint off but I'm concerned about damaging the plastic and/or original paint.  Can anyone recommend a process that will get this stuff off but not risk the paint underneath?  A new paint job would be expensive I would guess so that isn't an option right now.

Thanks

Here is the one I had some success with.  You can see the outline of the original shade of the red.  It's not perfect but anything is better than that white.

What did you use on that one?  I was going to suggest a polishing compound.  It will probably take a while, but it's about the only thing you can use without damaging the paint underneath too much.

Rubbing compound will work - just takes some time/effort....
You can also try, and I stress TRY ez off oven cleaner, on a small rag.
I have had luck with this in the past , for getting stupid little pinstripes off paint.
Just make sure once removed, you wash/wax the paint to get the residue off..

I'd be tempted to try the wifes hair dryer and then maybe a heat gun.

Becareful with the EzOff. My old man used that #$%* to strip the paint off an old Ford Tractor  ???

I was going to suggest Goo GOne.

If the pinstripe is on top of clearcoat the easiest way to shift it would be some 2000 grit wetordry with soapy water. then you can polish back to better than new and get re clearcoated in the future.
