Matt Mattison solved it, your shocks are too short, get some stock length shocks and unless you weigh 600 pounds, it won't rub. Cheers, Terry. ;D

maybe not. If the extra length of the Hagons is also extra travel, you've got the same problem, though you do have better shocks.  ;D

A visual of your pic is inconclusive. The amount of shock rod visible looks to be close to the amount of free space above the tire.

As has been mentioned a few times. the only way to tell for sure is to remove the springs, reattach the shocks and lift the wheel till it hits the rubber bumpstops on the shock rods.

I've seen so many cafes, bobbers, lowered bikes that must have this problem, just being ignored. A few torn up license plates/taillight assys.

PS: really nice looking! Where'd you get the brake arm? Looks to be a machined piece?

You could also add to the bump stop on the dampner to reduce the shock travel.  Something like two half moons an inch thick made of nylon put between the eye and the stock bump stop clamped or bolted together could do the trick. I have about 4" of travel between my tire and frame and if my total axle travel is longer than 4" I plan on doing the above.  I'd prolly make mine out of aluminum...

I've bottomed my shocks only a couple of times. But when i did it was with such force I'd be afraid to think what could happen if any frame part, or improvised bumpstop, got in the way.

Not near as bad as bottoming out the front, where a tankslapper would ensue. But quite a shock (pun) nonetheless.

The more laid down the shock is the higher the effective springrate. That's why yours is tough to bottom by weight. But if it can't pass the geometry test, its an incident waiting to happen.

Yours appear more laid down? But they obviously won't pass the geometry test.

it`s a 1980 cb650, so it`s geometry is a little different (and uglier) than other cb`s. those shocks are really firm, but i take your point.

thanks MCRider for telling me like it is. looks like i`ll be doing some welding this weekend. i`d rather confront the issue this way than finding out on the side of the road with my bike on the other side.

Hey guys, I know this is an old post but I'm having the same problem.



When bottomed out the tire sticks up about 1/4 to 3/8th's inch above the frame and my seat pan is flush with the frame.



You can see my seat sticking up a hair. I suppose I COULD get taller shocks but I'm a short guy (5'6" on a good day) and I'd be on my toes if I had to raise it up another couple inches and it'll be hard for me to walk it around. The OP mentioned shimming the bump stops so it lessens the travel of the stock shock. I measured it and I'd need about 3/4" of a shim. Is this dangerous or really bad in any way?

I really don't understand this frame loop mania that is going on...it's just a bad idea made even worse by guys not doing proper planning and design.  Why the #$%* would you want to hack off the stock rear brace only to replace it with a #$%*tily welded loop and an ugly broken skateboard for a seat that is gonna interfere with your back tire and make your bike ride worse than the cheaply manufactured piece of Japanese crap that it left the factory as in the first place?
