Stev-o's K3 "Park Racer"
« on: March 27, 2016, 09:53:54 AM »
Bought this bike a couple years ago, Prokop posted it up in the CL thread area here, I contacted the seller, bought it for $700.

It sat in storage until recently, the bldg got sold and I had to move 4 bikes and a spare Z1 motor. I brought it home and am committed to restoring it this year.

It came to me like this:

by

I dont know much about the bike other than it's a K3 and I love the bodywork!  I will be basically restoring it as is but improving it where I see fit.

I dont really care for the term "cafe racer" and I dont ride my bikes to cafes, but there are 7 City and County parks in my community that I "race" to on a regular basis, hence the name "Park Racer".

I wasnt planning a project thread but Ed Mo PM'd me the other day asking if I had one. Figured this would be a good place to keep it all together, so why not do it?
I will not be documenting every little detail but just most updates and questions as this type of build is a new one for me [I'm a "more stock than not" kind of guy]. But, I dont have a "racer" and want one! Who knows, maybe one day I could get it out on the Austin F1 track!!

This will [should!?] be a relatively easy project as I have a clear vision of what I want and will not be going crazy, simple is sometimes better.

As stated above, love the bodywork so I will be keeping that, and have already contacted my painter. It will be "Honda Racing Red" with black and gray stripes, similar to how it is.  The fairing and seat fiberglass is in very good cond, the side covers are cracked. I have a pair of Frankie's 'smoothies" on the shelf waiting. The tank exterior is for the most part dent free and the inside is in very good cond, very little rust.

The big question is the motor, it's been sitting for years but is not stuck, but have not checked compression yet. I will first try to use this one, option B is to rebuild my spare motor with an 836 and slap it in there! [I'm sure you guys will vote for that!]

That should give enough of an introduction, let's get started!

Already has very cool bits on it and should be a fun project.

It's kinda cool looking with its "retro" café look, should be a fun build. Wonder why they changed the brake to the right side?

Not so sure they did. The caliper was off when I got it and the wheel was not installed properly, it may have been reinstalled incorrectly.

I do not plan to use that front end, I have another "on the shelf".

Cool bike Stev-o.

If you have to do a motor build, this one is a good candidate for the 836.

What about classic Honda GP paint/livery: silver fairing with yellow stripe and red tank and seat.

Guy Martin's Hondas had a similar paint scheme when he raced for Wilson Craig a few years back:

I'd like to get ahold of a CalFab.

That is the red color I am going for.   The silver is not doing it for me but maybe red with yellow and silver stripes might look good.  Thx for posting the pics, Don.

I'll come along for the ride. I wouldn't call it a "cafe" at all either Steve, I gag at the thought, That bike has a braced frame, improved rear shock angle, all the correct wheel sizes, a decent pipe, a proper fairing and a single seat, I'd call that a race or race replica, its definitely no form over function sh1t box, someone had a go at doing it right..... ;D  It has a ton of potential, can't wait to see what you do with it... ;)

Hey Mick.....was wondering about the shock angle, good to hear that's an improvement.  Don't know what shocks those are but will get replaced.

Somewhere I have the Yoshi specs for the GS1000 race bikes, the shock angle he used, after extensive testing was around 36 degrees, I'd have to dig it out and have a read to be 100% sure but its either 36 or 36.5, I've seen that figure used on other conventional twin shock bikes as well..  Yep, no firestones.... :o ;D

You cheeky bastard.  You've been hiding this one!

I bet that motor has some fun bits in it.  People usually don't go through all that work just to leave the engine stock.

Here are some random shots the day I brought it home 3/10/16...

I like the seat, at least the looks, and how the tailight tucks into it. This will stay as is.

Raask rearsets, heard of the name, what do you know about them?  Thinking Nils should "vaporize" these for me. Or polish?? Will need rubbers too.

Headlight and fairing brackets, look to be well done.
