its a pity spa clashed with the classic club meeting at donington or we would have seen a few more fast tzs

Yes I had to make do with Donington too  ;) I will perhaps make it to Spa one day. It was good seeing and hearing a pack of TZ's again though but the best sound of the day was Lea Gourlay on the Paton.

yes it was gourlay i was referring to , he is usually a couple of seconds a lap faster than simpson [ the spa icgp winner ]  i was getting texts from roy flower at donington, he was beat by gourlay on the paton  and as he was riding a tz750 you can understand how fed up the g50 boys must be !.   i did start to take the piss but when i was told he had done a 1.15  [ faster than my times on an rg500 ] i decided to keep quiet !

mec the reason you are happy with the racing talk is that you are still a racer , no one without that experience could have built such a fantastic bike !

back to my finished project:
my new cam and 8 valves are back from their worldwide sightseeing tour. yesterday arrived, and today the bike is back on the road again. i am hoping, that the engine will last for the rest of my life :)
on monday i will do testrides on the panoniaraceway.

the package took 3 weeks from usa to austria. in this never ending time i had a idea. i decided to build a stroker engine. its time to build a spare racing engine. the engine will run with 1000ccm pistons and a bol d´or crankshaft (stroke +6mm).

if there is anybody who is interested in this project, please make suggestions how to title this thread.

For a title:  Mec's New Stroker Engine Thread.  We'll click on it, don't worry.

ah, not to sound too gratuitous but i'd go as far as saying the title could be completely nonsensical as long as "mec" was thrown in somewhere.

really mec, start churning out something sub-par.

back from hunugary, pannoniaring.
it was hot, 34°. but we had fun.

there was a 5 hours endurance race. each team was allowed to inscribe 5 racers with 5 bikes. we had been 4 riders and 4 bikes. most of the racers had modern supersport bikes, R1, GSXR, 1098er ducs.........but there was one team to defeat: our friends starting with guzzi too, but with more modern ones.
our bikes: one raceguzzi, the same we had in Spa/Francorchamps, one slightly modified LeMans1, one guzzi V78 year 1972 (front and rear drumbrakes!) and my egli.

to tell it short, our raceguzzi did 15 laps and then losing oil into the clutch and onto the rear wheel. this was what made us loose our battle. one bike lost, we had to race with the other remaining bikes that had been not fast enough.
besides two practice sessions on monday, in the race i did one turn á 13 laps with my egli. the bike run fine and was the fastest in our pit, but i did not want to ruin the engine again (there was some work to do as retightening cyl bolts and crankcase bolts. there was not enough time to do it before, the bike was more in a breakin period).
the only trouble i had, was that the engine looses some oil from the thin cylinder walls, what is known with the extreme big bore kits. but this did not effect the drivability in any way. the other issue is, that i would like to consult a friend (chassis expert) of mine, to improve the front fork spring and damping system. in fast turns the bike tends to chatter a little bit, i believe it comes from the front end.

we lost our battle by half a lap.

the next days i will learn what went wrong in our guzzi.

good idea!

from what i have heard, there was no visible damage, only oil coming from the oil seal.
maybe the engine run hot cause of the ultra hot day??

yes, i have seen the article yesterday.
the writers did a very good job, they know what they are talking about.

the bike still stays in vienna. a good friend of mine does a cartridge conversion to the old marzocchi fork. i hope that the front end chattering which is noticable from time to time can be eliminated.
in addition to this i will have to do some test runs with different tire brands.

good news: the same time there have be done computerized frame measurements that confirm that all specs are within good tolerances.

anybody care to scan and send, maybe privately?

MEC, would be interested to hear more about the cartridge conversion.

heard about people slotting CBR600 cartridges into everything, from 35 mm honda forks to norton roadholders.

would be nice to see some pics.

Lea was here in italy too and proceeded to destroy the locals,

great rider, but form what I hear, those who are up against those patons in IHRO are getting upset, the 4 valve version is supposed to have more than 70 hp..... no manx or G50 can keep up with them.

Mec, are you OK with us kidnapping your thread?

A mate of mine had the same problem in the Landsdown Series, they gave him special dispensation to ride a 250 NSU in the 350 class, he wiped them all out and most of the 500 field as well ;D ;D ;D

hello,

the bike is back at home.
the fork conversion was done by GMD Computrack, Schrottgasse 9, 1030 Vienna, Hannes Hufnagl 0043/1/7109616 .
from what I understood, the cartridge is a custom made one. unfortunately there are no pics cause the cartridge is already in the fork legs.
in addition to this Hannes reduced the fork travel from 140mm to 120mm and shortened the fork tubes by 30mm.
he advised me that there is a short brake in period and after testing all parameters can be changed to my needs, if wanted. otherwise the fork should work as it is now, it has been tested on a test stand.

astonishingly he showed me where there is some room for lightening the bike. most of all the old marzocchi fork is way too heavy. a cbr600 fork would do it better, funcionally and weight wise. the fork clamps are beefy, as is the rear chain sprocket adapter. with this know how 2kg can be saved.

furthermore he showed me 6mm hexagonal steel nuts. these nuts come from aircraft technology and are operated by a 7!!!mm wrench. incredible, there is more room for lightening......

back to the cartridge: from what i have heard the austrian company Haslacher can deliver white power cartridge systems for 38mm forks.

@TG: can you give me tire choice recommendations for rijeka? would like to run a 160mmx18 tire on the rear.

hei mec,

not sure i can help you, have to ask a question first

are you racing it in any vintage category? most vintage classes will not allow more than 3.5" rims and a 160 will be way too large.

I think that only 80's classes (early GSXR's, GPZ ) will let you use a rim that's good for a 160 tire.

of course, if it's only  a track bike then you are not limited but I dont know much about tires that are so wide.... I think that the only race compund 160-18 you'll find are the Avon AM23

hi,

will be racing Grab the Flag. we are allowed to use 4" rims, and a 160mm tire will fit very well.

the avon racing compound will last 3 practice sessions and one or two race runs? or will the avon compound melt away after 10 turns in rijeka :) ?

according to avon, a 4" will be good only for a 150

http://www.avonracing.com/club_page.aspx

even if you could fit a 160, I personally dont like how a narrow rim deforms it and makes it more pointy

those classic 18" racing avons are not like modern 17" race compound which you have to throw away after two-three sessions. They can last two race meetings actually -

are you putting an offset front sprocket? a 150-160 might touch the chain. Better ask people that are into 750's......
