GREAT job on the paint!!  Every time I see a tank that looks reasonably good stripped, I almost wish the builder would just clear the bare metal, and maybe paint some black rally stripes.  I think yours was a good candidate for paint given the one dent.  I really like the helmet, too!!

Thanks for the compliment viktor I am excited to see it come together. I did NOT know that about helmets and now you've worried me that I've destroyed the viability of the helmet itself. How do they get painted in the first place if paint is not safe for them?

Different paint, in sweden (crazy safety reuglations) It's illegal to re-paint the helmet. there is also a difference in the plastic helmets and the glasfiber halmets in case of ability to withstand paint etc. Biltwell seems to be ABS plastic and custom 500 some glasfiber component.
So Only some helmet has that feature, My advice is to try to email the company and ask Dont want to spoil the fun but it would suck to be paralyzed or missing insurense money due to "bad helmet" (if that's how it works in the US.... in Sweden it does, since it's law to wear a ECE 22-05 serticief helmet we aren't allowed to use the DOT helmets like biltwell and bell 500 custom helmets they dont match europes safety standards , nor modify the helmet, paint. )

Thanks deaf, I try to be as detailed as possible even if it means a wall of text. I hope to be able to help someone else in the future as well as document it for mysel should I ever rebuild another.

Oh man, thanks for the explanation and such. The thought never even crossed my mind. I have been searching online and I did read that the outer shell is usually ok to light coats but the inner-middle shell should t be exposed to paint, or the inside foam or padding. I had everything covered except the stripes so I am hoping all will be well. I am going to be buying a full face helmet though to wear as my main helmet, I just wanted a 'fun' helmet to have to match the bike. I am going to read about this more though as I don't want to ruin the protective properties of the helmet. Thanks viktor.

Chef - this one is coming out great.   I am a fan of the spramax as well - just perfect for motorcycle sized stuff.

That color really looks pretty darn close from the pics.  Gonna be a beauty.  Well done sir.  Well done.

These are my favorite kinds of builds to follow.   Very rewarding to say that you built it up and painted it yourself.  Get ready for the compliments.


FYI - one of your pics has a Mike's hard Lemonade in it.  A man with a proper mustache, such as yours, ouht to have a Guiness or something

haha thanks for the kind words green jeans. I KNEW that was coming about the mikes. it isn't mine! I don't drink that sugary malt stuff, only beer. my buddy Won't drink beer and the only thing he'll drink is mike's so when we hang its either that or nothing. I tease him about it all the time, I've got a Sam Adams Winter Lager cracked as we speak

alright, small update, got my new left and right hand controls on the bike, flexible cables and sheath are so much easier to get in the bike! the switches feel great too. I received my allen bolts for the engine covers and front fender.

in other news I called my local motorcycle shop to get my rims trued and they quoted me $240. are you freaking kidding me? I am going to have to try another shop and see. that seems ridiculous. I don't know if I trust myself to do it but hell if I am paying someone that much to do it.

Paint looks great! I will admit that I sped through a large part of this thread to get caught up but I noticed in one pic where someone has put both washers on one side on the front brake housing where the switch goes if that makes sense. There should be  a washer on each side of that banjo. Sorry if this was already discussed.

thanks 1bad, it is a learning process! I see your build popped up. you have perseverance beyond my comprehension I found the spraymax through another member here. found the website 66autocolor.com and emailed them with my question about color. I ended up sending a sample in and the color I ended up with is very close to candy blue green. I am very pleased with the color, the customer service, and the ease of paint. now I paint electric guitars all the time, so I am familiar with paint etiquette, but overall it was pretty simple. just be safe with that paint. I got a full paint suit and a respirator (get a full face one though). if you go with them let them know Justin Tuskey recommended you, Patty should like that

roach carver, I have completely rebuilt the front brake system, the only thing original is the tri-piece connection the two hoses and the brake switch. all new stuff. yeah I saw that both washers on one side......everything on this bike seems to be wrong. freakin PO's. I hope I am a good PO to the next owner of this bike if I ever sell it!

alright, changed my mind, am ordering a Tusk (close enough to my last name...must be good) truing stand and a runout gauge. I am not going to be scared of truing, just another notch in the belt. I wasn't going to mount or balance the tires before either but I am going to do that as well. self satisfaction is a great thing, wallet likes it too!

here is a question I have been pondering, do I true with the tire on, then balance? or should I true, then mount, then balance, and check true again?

I feel like this is an obvious "why true twice" thing but I to see if anyne had an ideas.

I've already asked a few and they said no. its ok though I am jumping with both feet again and am going to true, mount, and balance myself. its my biggest asset/downfall
