Installing center stand
« on: January 28, 2013, 04:11:01 AM »
When I installed the center stand, it took me 10 minutes or so and I never thought about it again.  Turns out it can be a real problem, here is how I done it.

First, verify the pin goes in easily.

Now attach the other end of the spring to the stand.

It takes little wiggling but the pin will slide in without much effort.

Much easier and safer than fighting the spring by itself.

First time I done it on a bike that was hanging on a come along and had to get under it to do it.  It took little bit more effort thant just the frame, but it was still matter of minutes.

Hope this helps.

Thanks 70cb750, nice clear write up. Should save time for many. Useing the coin method works also but I think may end up being much harder.

Shimming the spring works well for the sidestand.

This is better way for the centerstand.

...I used a little chain, one end of the chain on the end of the center stand spring and then pulling it with my hand that I can move the spring into the center stand spring holder, was easy  ;)

I had some trouble installing my center stand today using new C-clamp and new spring on my CB750K2 so I did a Forum search and came up with this thread as well as others. I had already installed the tube and stand and tightened everything down so didnt want to use the method the OP described here. I tried the coin method but the spring was really stiff so I searched for an alternative method - and found it!

Andy (736cc) described a really simple method that worked for me. I used a long philips screwdriver and hooked the open end of the spring around it. I then hooked the end of the screw driver around the center stand tang and in the stand-up position slid the spring down the screwdriver as I leveraged the screwdriver in the upwards direction. The spring slid down and hooked itself around the tang. Easy!

There is some resistance as the spring slides down the screwdriver and there is a critical spot on the screwdriver where the spring will slide down. Once you get this its easy.

Thanks Andy! (forum member 736cc).

cheers
Andy

If you have overhauled drum brakes on older cars then you know this trick. I learned it from a neighbor who was a mechanic back in the middle east. He kept laughing at me trying to run the spring, I said you can do better? Then I got shamed

I will recommend this method as well.  There is actually a tool that does the job a bit safer, but it's the same basic idea: using the leverage of the long rod to do the heavy stretching/pulling of the spring.  Once I was shown the concept, I felt stupid for never figuring it out on my own ;D

Just did it tonight but now you all must help me down from my OCD ledge. The open end of the hook that attaches to the side stand is now facing outwards. Originally it was inwards. Should this matter? did it come only one way from the factory?

It will not make a difference for the spring to stay in place.  If the outward end is not catching or scratching anything - like exhaust pipe for instance - you can leave it like that.
