My build, '78 750K
« on: July 09, 2013, 01:57:14 PM »
I wasn't planning on doing a whole lot to my bike when I originally got it but that is changing now. I'm getting into one of those "well I've done this, I may as well do this and this too" scenarios. There were a few things I needed to do (new tires, brakes, and some cables) and since I've had the bike out of commission doing those things I've started piling more on my plate, like a new seat, painting the tank, etc. So I figured I may as well make a little build thread, mostly for my own amusement, and possibly for anyone else who wanders here.

So, I bought the bike about 9 months ago, 1978 CB750K...

Pretty much stock, in nice shape, swapped the bars for clubmans...

and rode it like this for a while, got a different tank...

The brakes were getting worn and the tires weren't far behind so and there were a few other things I needed to address so in April I brought it in to a buddys garage to start getting this stuff taken care of...

While working on replacing the pads and flushing/bleeding the brakes I stripped the already peeling paint from the calipers to the bare metal and sprayed a few coats of clear to help keep it from rusting, it's not beautiful but I think it looks better lol...

Once the brakes were put back together, I replaced my throttle cables and got the new tires on.

The clubmans were a little uncomfortable on longer rides and they barely cleared the tank so I decided to switch it up to some renthals, I'm digging the look and more importantly they seem like they'll be way more comfortable, once I get the bike back on the road I'll have a better report on that though...

This just wont do...

Ok, now we're getting somewhere, got the back end chopped as well as trimmed off the seat lock...

Mocking up the seat hoop I got from Harisuluv...

and this is about where I'm at now...

Progress is pretty slow right now, got some things around the house I need to spend money on before getting back to the bike, but I'm excited to get her back on the road. I'm going to take a stab a making a seat, paint the tank, build an exhaust, and hopefully not get in too much farther over my head.  ::)

Thanks, yeah I really like the way they look and feel, it's still pretty agressive but more comfortable than the clubmans.

Yessir, I've got the clubmans and the stock (I think) bars, I'd like to get rid of both, which would you like?

Stock-ish bars...

Clubmans...

I have some bars similar to your Renthals on my '77. I definitely agree that they keep that aggressive look while still giving you a comfortable ride. Good luck with the build, looks like you're off to a good start already.

Thanks for the kind words guys, this is the first time I've torn down a bike this much. Life's been a bit crazy lately so I haven't had much time to work on it but hopefully in the me t week or so I should be able to do some wrenching. Main thing now is getting the seat pan made, shaping foam, and covering it then getting the exhaust mocked up and welded. I'm pretty happy with how it's going, just wish I could get I done sooner so I could get on the road again with it!

Dude I don't even know why, but that last picture you have of your bike from the rear is seriously one of the coolest shots I've seen. I can't figure out why, but it speaks pure badassness. I think it's a combination of those bars along with the tank. No doubt in my mind now I am buying a set of those. 8)

leaning towards a brat style seat, attempting to keep it 2 up. Trying to decide between metal or wood pan, need to figure out how to secure it while still being able to access battery and stuff. I'm gonna work on getting some materials this week so I can get it started and just go from there.

2 up seat will give you room to slide back when cruising at speed and get lower to the tank for less wind resistance and give you back a change of pace on riding any distance. Plus having room for a female on the back isn't so bad, if you care to give one a ride sometime. Also would give you room to strap down some luggage or tent if you are making a trip on the bike and camping along the way...
Depends on what you envision for your bike's future.
2 wheeled motoring on day trips or longer can be fun adventures. Totally different experience from doing the same route in a car...

Canonball,
I don't mind the seat so much as the mish-mash side covers. The color throws me off.
A brat seat will look nice with diamond quilting or tuck and roll.
How does it run?

The side covers are ok, you do not want to throw a temp spray bomb on them until the bike is a uniform color with new paint that would just complicate and could compromise a future coat of paint if they are not stripped back to bare plastic before respraying.

Tank and side covers are getting painted, just haven't made it that far down the to-do list yet. Yeah I like the versatility of the 2-up seat, and the wife likes to ride with me sometimes  :D

Couple of buddies and I are planning a little trip next month so I'm trying to get the bike done before then if I can!

replaced the clutch cable today and prepped the seat hoop a little more, should have that welded on next week. Also gonna try and get the exhaust done next week. Oh and I got some paint for the tank and side covers, so hopefully I'll have some decent progress made by next week.

Got the seat hoop welded up and the exhaust started, made a mockup for the seat pan. I'm thinking of making a steel seat pan and using bolts and wing-nuts to fasten it down. Saw this on another build and although I'd really like something hinged to keep access to the battery and stuff super easy, this way will still be easy to open and simple to fab up. Anyone have any other ideas? This is the best I've seen in my searching. The seat is going to be a brat style seat, and I'd like to keep everything as clean/simple looking as I can.

Painting has been put on hold so we can focus on the exhaust and seat. The exhaust is going to be a 4-2, it's coming together nicely so far, just need to make 2 more headers, flanges for the block, and weld it all up. I'm still weighing muffler options, the goal is for it to sound nice but not blatantly loud.

Couple of photos from todays progress...

lol Yeah I was kinda surprised how nice it looked when I threw it on but it had some graphics on the side I didn't care for and it was too nice a paint job to paint over so its been sold. I got this one a while back with the intention of painting it, which I'm getting ready to do. It's gonna look better than the yellow one I promise!

mufflers ordered, painting the side covers, prepping the tank for paint, picking up materials for the seat on Monday, and hopefully I'll get some more things checked off the list this week
